Outdoor air-ventilated crawls spaces are known to face problems caused by a high relative humidity inside the crawl space. The conditions then become favourable for different types of biological fouling. This in turn can have a negative impact on both the structural properties of building materials and the quality of the indoor air. Problems with high relative humidity are partly due to insufficient heating of the crawl space during the summer and partly due to a high moisture load from the ground below. In this report, new theoretical relations are derived that explain how the temperature beneath the floor structure is related to the temperature indoors, outdoors, and at the ground surface. The method can be used to estimate how the relative humidity varies inside the crawl space and how it can be affected by different measures. We have focused on measures based on combinations of controlled ventilation and heating, and developed a control algorithm which suggests that additional heating could be used periodically, during critical periods, to increase the amount of moisture that can be removed from the crawl space using ventilation

I smutsstudien anvÀndes torra
One of the most common injuries in horses are different types of wounds. The veterinarian is
responsible for determining which kind of management is most appropriate for the specific wound.
When possible, primary wound healing is usually preferred as the wound heals both faster and with
less formation of scar tissue compare with secondary wound healing. If the wound is contaminated
or if the edges of the wound is too far from each other to be sutured, secondary wound healing
becomes the only option. A secondary wound healing is often handled with an occlusive or semiocclusive dressing to protect the wound and to create a controlled environment. In order to choose
the right type of dressing it is important to have knowledge of the phases of wound healing. Different
phases require different environment for optimal healing. There is not one single type of wound
coverage that can be used on all wounds or through al wound healing phases. Common factors that
impair wound healing are infections or formation of exuberant granulation tissue, which can lead to
prolonged or unsuccessful healing. Bandaged wounds on the distal extremities of the horse develop
biofilm and exuberant granulation tissue to a greater extent compared with unbandaged wounds.
Wounds that heal in a moist environment heal both faster and with better epithelialisation.
A new type of dressing (Rheva) has been investigated with respect to the permeability of dirt
and moisture. The dressing, which have the shape of a dome with perforations, allows air to pass
through at the same time as it is claimed to maintain a moist environment and protect the wound
against contamination. The dressings were placed on intact skin, both on cut and uncut coat. No
wounds were created. In each dressing a compress was placed. Before and after every study period
the compresses was weighed. In this thesis in animal nursing two parallel studies were conducted,
one to investigate the permeability of dirt and one to investigate the permeability of moisture. For
the study about dirt, dry compresses were placed in the dressing. For the study about moisture, the
compresses were prepared with water before application in the dressings. The results showed a slight
increase in the weight of the compresses after the study period compared to before they were placed
in the dressings or prepared with water. This increase in weight can be suggested to be due to dirt
but could also have other explanations. The compresses prepared with water returned almost
completely to their original weight and the dressing can therefore not be considered to retain any
moisture

Strength Assessment of MiniBarsTM Reinforced Concrete Structures with Low Heat Cement
MiniBarsTM is a kind of high-performance composite macrofibre made of BFRP. It is designed to improve the flexural tensile strength and post-cracking (residual) strength of the concrete. Moreover, it has a reputation for corrosion-free and zero conductivity. This thesis focused on the influence of the MiniBarsTM fiber volume fraction on the behavior of the concrete under compressive and tensile stress. A compression test and 3-point bending test were conducted on the specimens containing 0%, 0.5%, and 1% of fiber by volume.
MiniBarsTM fiber volume fraction had a minor effect on the compressive strength of the concrete. In comparison with the plain concrete, the compressive strength decreased by 0.1% and 5.6% respectively for MiniBarsTM dosage of 0.5% and 1% after curing for 28 days. However, the MiniBarsTM fiber did improve the failure of the concrete. Fewer spalling and narrower cracks occurred in the cubes reinforced by MiniBarsTM fiber. No remarkable change was observed in the flexural tensile strength of the concrete due to the fiber addition. But the test results showed that the addition of MiniBarsTM fiber significantly improved the behavior of the concrete after flexural cracking. The specimens revealed a ductile response to the tensile stress. The residual tensile strength of the MiniBarsTM reinforced concrete in ULS and SLS went up by 110% and 150% respectively after when the added fiber volume fraction increased from 0.5% to 1.0%. It was mainly due to the bridging action and the pulling-out resistance of the MiniBarsTM
Fotogrammetri i digitala bilder.
stamdiametrar göras i bilden.
Radar.
noggranna sekundÀra samplet man samlar in.
fotogrammetri i digitala bilder.
sekundÀra samplet mÀts in med traditionella manuella metoder. This MSc thesis was done at the Department of Forest Resources and Geomatics SLU,
UmeÄ during the fall 1996 and spring 1997.
A requirement for accurate forestry planning at all levels is knowledge about the
condition of the forests today. The quality of the decisions made will therefore be
proportional to the quality and amount of information collected.
Sensors like radar, lidar and different types of digital cameras are today used quite
successfully for remote sensing from aircraft or satellites. The purp ose of the thesis is
to make a feasibility-study about ground-based use of these kinds of sensors in order
to rationalise and improve forest inventory work.
Following techniques where selected for a closer study oftheir qualities as ingredients
in an inventory concept:
âą
Lidar. Lidar is an abbreviation for light detection and ranging and is a laserÂ
hased technique to measure distance and reflection of an object. Compared to
other kinds of sensors the lidar has a very high angular resolution. Therefor it is
well suited for scanning and ranging where high accuracy is required. The
disadvantage of the method isthat a clear sight to the object is needed and that the
technique must still be considered advanced and expensive.
âą
Photogrammetry in digital images. If the distance to the object and the
intemal geometry of the camera is known for an image, measurements of for
example tree diameters or the shape of the whole trunk can be made. By using
digital pietmes and image processing it seerus possible to develop programs that
more or less automatically detects and measure the desired variables.
âą
Radar. The radar-based sensors are using much lower frequencies than the
laser. This gives radar the characteristic of being able to see through objects half
the size of the wavelength or less. This could be very valuable if radar are
supposed to be used for forest inventory work since there will be a problem with
undergrowth covering stems if methods that demands visual sight will be used.
The disadvantage with using the appropriate wavelengths is that the angular
resolution will be to low for scanning where the purpose is to measure each stem
individually. If on the other hand the total sum of the signals in a seanned sector is
analysed in order to extract information about the standing volume, radar seems
like a very feasible technique for developing an effective forest inventory concept.
âą
Ultras
o nie. Ultrasonic can be used by the same theories as for radar. The
advantage for ultrasonic compared to radar is that there is a supply of
comparatively cheap and simple standard components. The disadvantage is that
how much the signal will be reduced while transmitting through the air depends to
a high grade of the atmospheric humidity and temperature, which means that
calibration must be made. Another negative characteristic of ultrasonic is that the
signal is sensitive for wind. The methods of in
ventory used al so have an effect on the feasibility of the techniques.
If double sampling is used there will be different requirements for the equipment
depending on if it is data from the large primary sample or the more accurate
secondary sample being collected. When collecting the primary sample i
t' s necessary
to collect a large amount of data to prevent errors that originates from the
representation of the population. The quality of the collected data will therefore be
less important. This means that techniques that collects large arnounts of data with
high cost-efficiency but lacks in precision will be interesting, for example radar or
ultra-sonie sensors that collects data continuously while moving. On the other hand if
the purpose is to collect the secondary sample, equipment that measures with high
accuracy, like lidar or photogrammetry in digital pictures will be required. Another,
maybe more realistic alternative, is to use a cost-efficient sensor-hased technique to
collect data from the primary sample and then use traditional manual circular plot
sampling for the secondary sample
Green roofs can help us to provide many imperative ecosystem services and be part of the solutions that combat our ongoing climate crisis. In this stressed world of ours, green space can also yield a positive and calming influence. Therefore, it is essential that the green roofs weŽre creating, are sustainable over time and strive to continue their full potential.
My aim with my master thesis is to provide suitable examples of perennial plants for green roofs and the high-stress environment in which they create. I wanted to examine the possibility of increasing the amount of suitable plant material by looking at biochar and its effects on green roof substrates regarding water â holding capacity, nutrient cycling, and change in soil pH. To create sustainable and visually attractive green roofs plantings, Iâve also been looking into how ecology and design can co-exist in the concept of naturalistic planting design. My goal with this work is for it to be shared with other landscape architects and similar professions to create future attractive and sustainable green roofs.
My studies resulted in nine different hypothetical plant bed scenarios, divided into three different substrate depths of 50, 150, and 300 millimetres. Within these three types of planting beds, the green roof substrate has been mixed with 0%, 10%, and 20% volume per volume (v/v) biochar. This generated nine different lists of plants showing how the species diversity changes over the influence of biochar. To illustrate how the different species from the lists can be used in plantings, I created three different perennial planting mixes, based on naturalistic planting design principles, for the three different substrate depths. The thinnest substrate is mostly defined by species from the Sedum family, the median depth support the growth of herbaceous meadow flowers and the thickest consists of taller and stronger growing perennials.
Conclusions of my work indicate that biochar with its ability to store water and nutrients can enhance the environment in green roof substrates and therefor extend the list of potential plant materials. Regarding biochar, 20 % v/v biochar had a larger impact on the variety of plant selection than 10 % v/v. In my hypothetical plant bed scenario of 50 millimetres substrate depth, the list with potential plant species significantly increased by 46 % when comparing the difference between no added biochar and 20 % v/v biochar. Ultimately, when designing green roofs there are several key components needed to achieve long-lasting and more sustainable green roofs. I believe these consist of rich species diversity, consideration of plants natural habitat, and how they interact with other species
OmrÄdet Àr uppskattat men
Effects of temperature and moisture on plant-parasitic nematodes : expected effects of current climate change
Nematodes are the worldâs most common multicellular animals, and there are probably several million different species spread throughout the world. Their dispersal and quantity may depend on the nematodes outstanding ability to survive under extreme external condition. Plant parasitic nematodes cause a decrease in crop yield throughout the world and are therefore economically important pests. It can be difficult to predict the damage they cause since their activity and ability to spread depends on several factors in the surrounding environment. Two of these factors are temperature and moisture. In addition, climate change leads to a more varied climate which affects for example temperature and moisture. The purpose of this study is to describe the effects of temperature and moisture on plant parasitic nematodes through a literature study and also analyse possible effects of climate change on plant parasitic nematodes. The activity of plant parasitic nematodes is positively affected when temperature and moisture reach favourable levels. Plant parasitic nematodesâ have a great ability to survive extreme changes in both temperature and moisture. The mobility of nematodes is reduced in conditions of low soil moisture because they rely on a water film around the soil particles to be able to move in the soil. On the other hand, they can survive dehydration for longer periods by putting themselves in diapause or anhydrobiosis, and thus spread longer distances with the help of tools and machines. Temperature affects the rate of hatching and thus the rate of generation per season. It is therefore important to consider temperature and moisture when planning crop rotation to avoid major crop losses
The transmission of international shocks to the UK. Estimates based on a time-varying Factor Augmented VAR
The aim of this paper is to gauge the importance of foreign demand, supply and interest rate shocks on the UK economy and assess how their role has changed over time. To that end we devise a time-varying factor augmented VAR model that captures the relationship between 17 industrialised countries and the UK and accounts for any temporal evolution in this relationship. The response of UK macroeconomic variables to a foreign interest rate shock is estimated to have changed significantly since the early 1990s. International demand shocks play an important role in driving World and UK real activity, especially during the recent recession
