Confronting Colonial Standard Making Practices: Environmental Governance and Invasive Species Management at Walpole Island First Nation

Hegemonic standard making practices in Ontario environmental governance can disregard the interests of First Nations by limiting funding and scope for community environmental management (Dalton, 2009). Invasive species management at Walpole Island First Nation has sought to control aggressive plant species that have infiltrated culturally and economically important ecosystems. Ontario government agencies, Ministry of Environment (MOE), and Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), offer funding through sources such as the Great Lakes Guardian Community Fund (GLGCF) for community management projects with the intent to encourage collaboration. However, predetermined ‘acceptable’ project designs can override community defined-goals. This was evident during the funding process for an invasive species management project undertaken by the Walpole Island Heritage Centre during the 2013 summer field season targeting invasive white sweet clover and Phragmites. I address colonial processes in Ontario invasive species management and advocate for an equitable platform for environmental discussion, decision-making and co-governance (Dalton, 2009)

This research analyses European research projects funded through the European Union's Framework Programmes, whose main thematic area is cultural heritage. It therefore aims to understand what kind of projects have been funded within the discipline and what their thematic evolution has been over time, using data analysis and natural language processing (NLP) techniques to extract information from the main sources of information and process it in order to shed light on the research question: what themes, within the field of cultural heritage, do European research projects address? Starting from the political and legal context in which these projects are funded, we will develop a methodology to identify, process and analyse the data associated with European cultural heritage research projects, a methodology that will help us to analyse and describe the characteristics and trends of the projects as a whole. We will conclude the research by briefly referencing current policies that may influence the definition of project's topics in the field of cultural heritage in the near future. The II ArTechnology Seminar’s proposal, based on the R+D+I project “Augmented knowledge and accessibility: museographic representation of complex cultural contents”, has raised some reflections about this dynamic, starting from the following questions: How museums and memory institutions take Information and Communications Technology over to promote spaces and collections. How artists (re)shape their works using technology. How the Arts dialogue with entertainment in between a highly media culture. How urban spaces become creative collaborative spaces using technology. How technology can make access to knowledge easier. Which model(s) of aesthetic experience(s) ITC encourage technology mediated artworks. These questions laid the foundations of many of the proceedings presented at the Seminar, here published. Similarly, the session celebrated at Medialab-Prado continued this perspective, with the intervention of Marcos García (presenting Medialab-Prado, the lines of work, their working model and their approach to digital ulture), Laura Fernández (presenting other projects developed at Medialab-Prado’s workshops) and Alma Orozco (presenting the project “Functionnings: open design from functional diversity”, about accessibility and the design of environment from the perspective of functional diversity and the open and free design ad standards, which allow their reproduction and adaptation), raising an intense debate among the participants.

Razvojni izzivi Slovenije

    Get PDF
This book (‘Slovenia’s development challenges’) deals with fundamental issues of Slovenia’s development. It explains the main issues in Slovenia’s Development Strategy, and evaluates its bases and the direct effects of individual development measures. Each in their own way, the authors discuss pressing developmental issues at the level of the state, regions, municipalities, or individual sectors, seeking possible answers, new stimulation, potentials, and opportunities. The basic premise was that the main task is to seek solutions for an economically successful, socially just, environmentally friendly, and ethically responsible society, and that all development efforts must focus on these goals. Although it was adopted only three years ago, in line with the premises described above and the changed macroeconomic conditions, Slovenia’s Development Strategy requires amendments to turn Slovenia’s development path in a sustainably more acceptable direction. One should not be guided only by a desire for quantity~instead, one should strive for higher-quality development that is fair to every citizen as well as the environment.Knjiga obravnava temeljna razvojna vprašanja Slovenije. Osvetljuje osrednje dileme Strategije razvoja Slovenije, vrednoti njena izhodišča in neposredne učinke posameznih razvojnih ukrepov.

The musical enculturation of Irish traditional musicians: An ethnographic study of learning processes

    Get PDF
The enculturation of Irish traditional musicians involves informal, non-formal, and sometimes formal learning processes in a number of different settings, including traditional music sessions, workshops, festivals, and classes. Irish traditional musicians also learn directly from family, peers, and mentors and by using various forms of technology. Each experience contributes to the enculturation process in meaningful and complementary ways. The ethnographic research discussed in this dissertation suggests that within Irish traditional music culture, enculturation occurs most effectively when learners experience a multitude of learning practices. A variety of experiences insures that novices receive multiple opportunities for engagement and learning. If a learner finds one learning practice ineffective, there are other avenues of enculturation. This thesis explores the musical enculturation of Irish traditional musicians. It focuses on the process of becoming a musician by drawing on methodologies and theories from ethnomusicology, education, and Irish traditional music studies. Data was gathered through multiple ethnographic methodologies. Fieldwork based on participant-observation was carried out in a variety of learning contexts, including traditional music sessions, festivals, workshops, and weekly classes. Additionally, interviews with twenty accomplished Irish traditional musicians provide diverse narratives and firsthand insight into musical development and enculturation. These and other methodologies are discussed in Chapter 1. The three main chapters of the thesis explore various common learning experiences. Chapter 2 explores how Irish traditional musicians learn during social and musical interactions between peers, mentors, and family members, and focuses on live music-making which occurs in private homes, sessions, and concerts. These informal and non-formal learning experiences primarily take place outside of organizations and institutions. The interview data suggests these learning experiences are perhaps the most pervasive and influential in terms of musical enculturation. Chapter 3 discusses learning experience in more organized settings, such as traditional music classes, workshops, summer schools, and festivals. The role of organizations such as Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and pipers’ clubs are discussed from the point of view of the learner. Many of the learning experiences explored in this chapter are informal, non-formal, and sometimes formal in nature, depending on the philosophy of the organization, institution, and individual teacher. The interview data and field observations indicate that learning in these contexts is common and plays a significant role in enculturation, particularly for traditional musicians who were born during and after the 1970s. Chapter 4 explores the ways Irish traditional musicians use technology, including written sources, phonography, videography, websites, and emerging technologies, during the enculturation process. Each type of technology presents different educational implications, and traditional musicians use these technologies in diverse ways and some more than others. For this, and other reasons, technology plays a complex role during the process of musical enculturation. Drawing on themes which emerge during Chapter 2, 3, and 4, the final chapter of this dissertation explores overarching patterns of enculturation within Irish traditional music culture. This ethnographic work suggests that longevity of participation and engagement in multiple learning and performance opportunities foster the enculturation of Irish traditional musicians. Through numerous and prolonged participation in music-making, novices become accustomed to and learn musical, social, and cultural behaviours. The final chapter also explores interconnections between learning experiences and also proposes directions for future research
