The purpose of this paper is to discuss decision-making processes employed by the large Japanese companies. Its main focus is to study different social methods utilized in the collective decision-making process and the importance of reaching consensus and shared responsibility. It will discuss the importance of the collective aspect of decisions from the perspective of the individual participating in it and the work-group as a whole and it also attempts to explore the boundaries for individuals in the Japanese business culture and individual’s role in a group. It will study the correlation between allowed decision-making latitudes for the individuals to the shared responsibility for the outcome of the collective decision. The main conclusion of the paper suggests that importance of unanimity cannot be overestimated, and that unanimity is a condition socially needed, rather than a principle of voluntary participation
