This paper faces the problem of how to determinate the framework in which, according to Aristotle, the deliberation and his results can be assessed: the decision and the consequent action. The problem emerges mainly because of what Aristotle calls “indetermination of deliberation,” since, in situations whose options about what to deliberate are blurred, it is difficult to determinate which is the framework that can be used to determinate if the decision resulting from the deliberation is accurate or not. To face this problem, in the first place, we distinguish between technical and moral deliberation. The distinction is framed in terms of the ends because in technical deliberation the end is extrinsic to the action itself, and for this reason it is possible to offer different assessments of the actions achieved. In moral deliberation, the ends are only intrinsic to the action, and they are determined only in behalf of their connection with good deliberation. So, it is only possible to establish an adequate normative framework to assess each deliberation based upon a “good deliberation model”, established by practical wisdom, and extended also for the community from which the subject takes part

Improving bioethical decision-making with a little help from legal argumentation

The most appropriate method for clinical decision-making is deliberation. The deliberative procedure aims to achieve wise and prudent decisions about health care taking into account facts, values and norms. Since deliberative reasoning is shared by healthcare professions, ethics and law, this paper introduces the structure and features of the bioethical deliberative procedure and suggests to improve it with some contributions from legal science and theories of argumentation.El método más adecuado para la toma de decisiones biomédicas es la deliberación. Mental frames: Moral frames? Public deliberation and democracy in neuropolitics

En este trabajo trato de abordar el concepto de marco mental como clave para entender la concepción que la neuropolítica tiene de la deliberación pública y la democracia. En un primer lugar expondré los puntos centrales de las teorías de Jonathan Haidt y George Lakoff sobre el marco mental y la deliberación pública. Después pondré en relación la idea del marco mental con el concepto de marco referencial de Taylor. Finalmente, analizaré críticamente el modelo de deliberación pública y de democracia que cabe extraer del concepto de marco mental en la neuropolítica.In this article I address the concept of «mental frame» as the key to understand the conception neuropolithics has on moral deliberation. Firstly, I will expose the core points of Jonathan Haidt y George Lakoff’s theories on mental frame and public deliberation. Then, I will put in relation the idea of mental frame with Charles Taylor’s concept of «referential frame». This will allow us, finally, to critically analyze the model of public deliberation and democracy that can be drawn from the concept of moral frame in neuropolitics

Racionalidad y deliberación en la acción colectiva

La teoría de la acción colectiva, tal y como fue formulada por Mancur Olson en 1965, se basaba en un concepto instrumental-estratégico de la racionalidad que ha sido el habitualmente utilizado en la teoría de la elección racional estándar. Diversos teóricos sociales (como Habermas o Elster) han tratado de desafiar esta concepción postulando un concepto alternativo de racionalidad que se base en la deliberación o la argumentación racional. En este artículo se discute hasta qué punto tales intentos han tenido éxito a la hora de ofrecer una alternativa teórica real a la racionalidad estratégica como mecanismo de generación y coordinación de las acciones colectivas. Para ello se plantearán tres cuestiones: 1) ¿Es la racionalidad comunicativa o deliberativa conceptualmente diferente de la racionalidad estratégica? 2) ¿Es empíricamente plausible como principio explicativo de las acciones colectivas, y especialmente de las de los movimientos sociales? 3) ¿Es normativamente más defendible?The theory of collective action formulated by Mancur Olson in 1965 was based on an instrumental-strategic concept of rationality that has been generally used by standard rational choice theory. Different social theorists (such as Habermas or Elster) have tried to challenge this view by defending an alternative concept of rationality based on deliberation or rational argumentation. In this article I discuss to what extent these challenges have been successful in offering a real theoretical alternative to strategic rationality as a mechanism for the production and coordination of collective actions. For that purpose, three questions will be addressed: 1) Is communicative or deliberative rationality conceptually different from strategic rationality? 2) Is it empirically plausible as an explanatory principle for collective actions (and specially for those of social movements)? 3) Is it more defensible from a normative point of view

Growth, movement, and attrition of northern bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus, in the Pacific Ocean, as determined by tagging

ENGLISH: The growth of northern bluefin tuna is described by a two-stanza model. For fish between 191 and 564 mm in length the Gompertz curve, with values of 581 mm and 4.32 for Loo and K (annual), respectively, is used. The fish between 564 and 1530 mm grow linearly, at the rate of 0.709 mm per day. Age-O fish tagged and released in the western Pacific Ocean have been recaptured in the western, central, and eastern Pacific. The minimum time between release in the western Pacific and recapture in the eastern Pacific is 215 days. Older fish, mostly Land 2-year olds, tagged and released in the eastern Pacific have been recaptured in the eastern and western Pacific. The minimum time between release in eastern Pacific and recapture in the western Pacific is 674 days. The coefficient of natural mortality is estimated from data on growth and ambient temperature to be 0.276 on an annual basis, with 90-percent confidence limits of 0.161 and 0.47L Spawning of northern bluefin takes place only in the western Pacific. Some of the juveniles migrate to the eastern Pacific, where they reside for several months to several years before returning to the western Pacific. The portion of fish which migrate to the eastern Pacific varies among years, and this appears to be an important cause of the annual variation in the catches in the eastern Pacific Ocean.
