FrÄn koja till plan
This thesis concerns questions regarding how childrenâs perspectives on the outdoor environment can be approached in a planning context. Attention is drawn to the general understanding of childhood and the definition of outdoor environment as variables in different planning contexts. Together these variables define in which way children become visible in the planning context. Childrenâs participation is emphasized in contemporary planning. This thesis argues that understanding and insights concerning childrenâs experiences and understanding of their own places can create complementary lines of communication. The first article provides the empirical and methodological point of departure. Through walkabouts with children, questions are developed concerning childrenâs use and experiences of outdoor environments. These questions are compared and related to problems, insights and experiences that planners have concerning environments for children. Parts of two perspectives are described in order to elucidate some of the problems that can arise due to differences between a childâs perspective and a plannerâs perspective. In the second article childrenâs own places is the pivot. Through in depth studies of childrenâs dens it is shown that finding a suitable place, collecting, sorting and manipulating with environment and accessible materials are crucial parts of starting a den making process and appropriating a place as oneâs own. Specific examples are put forward which show the close relationship between childrenâs experience and understanding of the outdoor environment and their construction and design of dens. Childrenâs dens are used to exemplify and clarify the difference between childrenâs perspectives and plannerâs perspectives. The last article is concerned with the theoretical and practical analysis of these questions. Through interviews, studies of planning documents and reflections on my own planning experience an analysis is made of the importance of maps and plans as tools in the planning process. It is argued that the bias of these tools emphasizes and reinforces the visual point of departure to the physical environment and outdoor places, while childrenâs multi-sensuous and acting oriented point of departure is difficult to handle and process in maps and plans. A practical contribution is suggested on how to improve insights and understanding of childrenâs perspectives in planning contexts
Popular education and the digital citizen: a genealogical analysis
This paper historicises and problematises the concept of the digital citizen and how it is constructed in Sweden today. Specifically, it examines the role of popular education in such an entanglement. It makes use of a genealogical analysis to produce a critical âhistory of the presentâ by mapping out the debates and controversies around the emergence of the digital citizen in the 1970s and 1980s, and following to its manifestations in contemporary debates. This article argues that free and voluntary adult education (popular education) is and has been fundamental in efforts to construe the digital citizen. A central argument of the paper is that popular education aiming for digital inclusion is not a 21st century phenomenon; it actually commenced in the 1970s. However, this digitisation of citizens has also changed focus dramatically since the 1970s. During the 1970s, computers and computerisation were described as disconcerting, and as requiring popular education in order to counter the risk of the technology ârunning wildâ. In current discourses, digitalisation is constructed in a non-ideological and post-political way. These post-political tendencies of today can be referred to as a post-digital present where computers have become so ordinary, domesticized and ubiquitous in everyday life that they are thereby also beyond criticism.
I arbetet inkluderades 20 artiklar. BegrĂ€nsningar inom examensarbetet Ă€r att det kan finnas en möjlighet att nĂ„gon relevant litteratur uteblivit pga. t.ex. tillgĂ€nglighet eller sprĂ„k.Hospitalization can for longtime-ill children contribute to different experiences due to how the care is perceived. Things that might affect childrenâs experiences is how they get treated by professionals and if they are given an opportunity to participate in their care. Therefore, focus in this study, is the social environment. The aim of this study is to examine how research describes how healthcare professionals can enable participation for longtime-ill children. The research questions were framed by ICFâs definition of participation, Harry Shierâs levels of participation and how experiences of participation are described by Almqvist, Eriksson and Granlund. The frame of reference in this study is due to one of the central concepts in occupational therapy, participation. In this study 20 articles were included. The articles were quality checked and afterwards analyzed. Through the analyze 3 themes were emerged that answered the research questions; childrenâs experiences of participation in their care, the contexts meaning for childrenâs participation in their care and factors that could include children in their care. The results that rose were discussed parallelly to background and research questions. Results showed that there are many things that affect childrenâs participation when it comes to care. Children can for example experience that age, fears, information, decision-making and different rolls in the professional-parent relationship can affect their participation. When it comes to context there are environmental, personal and social factors that affect the participation. The study shows, that a person-centered approach should be taken by professionals so that children could participate more in their care. The results from this study can be used by professionals to increase the understanding of a good treatment in healthcare. Restrictions in this study may be acknowledged by pointing out that some adequate literature might have been defaulted due to e.g. accessibility or languages
This thesis is about pedagogical documentation in Finnish early childhood education and care, and on its effect on parental participation. It is commissioned by the early childhood educational organizations Stiftelsen Sedmigradsky and BarnavĂ„rdsföreningen. Our aim is to examine the use of pedagogical documentation, with focus on its use as a tool for plan-ning and evaluation, and to see how pedagogical documentation can help enhance the pa-rental involvement in the daily activities in day care centers. The main questions are: "How is pedagogical documentation used today at the day care centers of Sedmigradsky and BarnavĂ„rdsföreningen, and how is it utilized in the aspect of planning and evaluation of the day care centersâ activities?" and "What would increase the degree of parental participation, and how big a part does pedagogical documentation play in this?" The theoretical anchoring is primarily in former Finnish researches on pedagogical documentation and the social pedagogical perspective on participation and social involvement. For this study we interviewed the personnel of 5 different day care centers on their use of pedagogical documenation. We also asked the parents at the same day care centers to fill in a survey with questions about their knowledge and involvement in the practices concerning documentation, planning and evaluation at the day care centers, and their sense of participation in the day care centersâ daily activities. The study has a qualitative perspective and we analyzed and categorized the answers from both personnel and parents and compared their views. Pedagogical documentation has been included in the new plan for early childhood development in Finland as a tool to be used in early childhood education, but our results show that it has not yet reached its full potential; the personnel are still learning the method, they find lack of time being the biggest obstacle for the practice of pedagogical documentation and the parents are not yet fully included in the process of it, although they otherwise seemed pleased with their degree of involvement in the activities of the day care centers
The Swedish Library Act states that âLibrary activities shall be available to everyoneâ and other policy documents in Sweden promote the public library as a place making information and culture accessible to all. The Library Acts of Denmark, Finland and Norway include similar statements, as well as the core values of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions. However, the concept of accessibility is seldom defined or discussed. During recent years, the concept of participation is widely used in the context of accessibility in cultural policies, including policies related to public libraries. Even so, this concept also lacks a clear meaning. Accessibility and participation are closely related to democracy; by making information accessible and by enabling participation libraries are considered as promoters of democracy. Thus, when the meaning of accessibility and participation changes, the understanding of democracy is affected. In this article, I explore the meaning of the concepts accessibility and participation in Swedish library policies. Eleven library policies are analyzed utilizing Arnsteins âladder of participationâ and Fraserâs critique of Habermas notion of the public sphere. The article also discusses how the notion of democracy is affected by the different meanings accessibility and participation hold in the respective policies
I intervjun deltog fem stycken frÄn personalen.
Physical activity is found to promote the development of children in many ways. The importance of social participation and good group dynamics is also increasingly highlighted nowadays. The purpose of this study is to investigate the connection between physical activities and social participation. The goal is to identify physical activities that during the play support the social participation of children aged 3-5 in day nurseries. Our question formulations are: 1) How do different physical activities influence the social participation of children in day nurseries during the play? 2) How do children react to different physical activities? The data collection occurred in three day nurseries in the Helsinki region by arranging four different physical activities in the form of play. The physical activities consisted of one tag play, one team sport and two Sherborne practices of which one is a play with close body contact and the other a ring game. All day nurseries were visited three times and the same four activities were arranged each time. The data collection method was observation and video filming was also used. After each day nursery visit a diary was written about how the children reacted and acted during the different activities. Each play situation was video filmed to be able to return to the observation material and analyze it further. A self-made check list was used to analyze the video material. Through the check list participation points were got, from which participation percentage for each activity was counted. The Knot Play gained the highest participation percentage (81 %). Next was Plug Tag (76 %) with Tunnel Play closely following (75 %). The team sport Football was least participation improving (65, 5 %).We think that the study results well can be practiced in day nurseries and hobby groups for children aged 3-5.Fyysinen aktiivisuus on osoittautunut edistÀvÀn lapsen kehitystÀ monella tasolla. 2) Miten lapset reagoivat erilaisiin fyysisiin aktiviteetteihin?
Toimintaoppaan tavoitteena on vahvistaa lasten osallisuutta pÀivÀkodissa, eli huomioida heidÀn ajatuksiaan ja toiveitaan pÀivÀkotitoimintaan liittyen sekÀ huomioida lasten turvallinen kasvuympÀristö.
TÀrkeimpÀnÀ kÀsiteenÀ tÀssÀ opinnÀytetyössÀ on lasten osallisuus. Ideoiden saamiseksi osa kirjoittajista on vieraillut yhteistyöpÀivÀkodissa.
The purpose of this bachelorâs thesis is to collect ideas for an activity guide for the project Dagisfred. The project was initiated by FolkhĂ€lsans förbund r.f. and during 2016 FolkhĂ€lsan is developing the concept of Dagisfred by cooperating with students from Novia Univeristy of Applied Sciences. The goal of the project is to further strengthen nurseries work with respect, participation and safety. The main focus of this bachelorâs thesis was childrens participation and influence in nurseries.
Ideas for the activity guide are collected by obtaining childrenâs and educators thoughts and opinions about Dagisfred. To be able to do this FolkhĂ€lsan has developed two instruments, Spelet för Dagisfred and Dialogduken. Spelet for Dagisfred is a game for children and Dialogduken is for the staff. The students have documented the use of these instruments at the nursery. The result from these documentations has then been analyzed. Based on the analysis of the result and the bachelorâs thesis theory the students have developed ideas that will be compiled to an activity guide.
The results show that the instruments work well in use of collecting thoughts and opinions from the children as well as educators. The activity guide will support nurseries to achieve Dagisfred
The purpose of this questionnaire study was to find out whether next of kin to myeloma patients perceive themselves to be participating in the care and how they are met by health care staff. Another purpose was to investigate what next of kin felt was important regarding the contact with health care providers and how the health professionals could promote the participating of next of kin in the patientsŽ care.
The sample consisted of about 50 to 75 year old myeloma patientsÂŽ spouses. A questionnaire with both open and closed questions, was served 19 next of kin to patients that had given their consent. Out of 19 questionnaires were 16 returned and the responses were analyzed by qualitative content analysis and static descriptive approach.
The results showed that the vast majority felt that they were participating in the care and only one third desired further participation. The experience of participation meant being seen receiving adequate and timely information and support in the difficult situation. Suggestions on how caregivers could promote this was through encouragement, gained information and support regarding managing the challenges of everyday life in their own homes. The next of kin experiences to be overall friendly, knowledgeable and professionally treated and they emphasized that a personal, honest, confident acknowledgement of them on behalf of the care professionals was important
Summary

The method takes practical form in a discussion board, the purpose of which is to talk about the environment of the daycare together with the children. The goal of the discussion board is to make a safe environment together with the children by strengthening participation.
The following questions find their answers in this thesis: How could the staff together with the children make the environment of the daycare safe? How can the childrenâs thoughts be taken into consideration by the staff, using a discussion board? How can the staff get the children involved in the daily routines?
The thesis consists of two principal parts: a theoretical reference frame and a product. The theoretical reference consists of the following subjects: the life world and the environment of the daycare, the role of the educationalist and human outlook. The product, in form of a discussion board, completed with bottoms and cards, works as a tool for concretizing and making the discussion come clear.
For the child to feel participation, a safe environment is important, as well as being understood. It is important for a child to feel that it is able to influence its situation and surroundings
