eCommerce Market Convergence in Action: Social Casinos and Real Money Gambling

The social casino and real money gambling industries, including gambling at online and live venues (such as casino resorts), are quickly converging (H2 Gambling Capital & Odobo, 2013). Differences in demographics and gambling behaviors for different frequencies of social casino participation among real money online gamblers are examined to explore customer behaviors between the two markets. Frequency of play in social casino games varied depending on gender and education, similar to patterns in real money gambling. Players who participated more frequently in social casino games were also more likely to spend more time participating in real money online gambling, suggested to be due to increased familiarity with the games. Findings provide consumer insight for online gambling and social casino companies working toward convergence of the two game types, including implications for target markets for crossover play, loyalty programs, and corporate social responsibility

Residents\u27 Perceptions of Casino Development in Korea: The Kangwon Land Casino Case

This study was developed to examine the underlying relationships among the socio-demographic variables of casino community residents, the perceptions of potential benefits and costs, and the support for casino development based on the social exchange theory. The results show that social and economic benefits were most significant in determining the level of support for casino development. None of the demographic variables significantly affected support level. Based on the results of this study, casino operators and policymakers should make efforts to minimize the negative social factors and maximize social and economic benefits if they want support from residents for further development of casino businesses

There is modest support for opening a gambling casino in New Hampshire. A single casino at Rockingham Park is the preferred location. And although few New Hampshire adults regularly visit casinos outside of the state, nearly half state residents say they would visit a casino on the Massachusetts border at least once a year

Session 3-3-B: The interplay between law, development and spillover effects of casino gaming: Theory and the Asian evidences

Taking into consideration of the unique features and practice of casino gaming, the significance of law in the development of this industry, and the onging interactions between law, the industry’s succeeding performance and its spillover effects are generalized and illustrated in this paper. Based on the rationales of law and economics, and the institutional approach to economic analysis, a functional model is constructed to depict the related interplaying forces and the development of casino gaming. In principle, it is shown that business scope and scale of casino gaming is largely defined by law on one hand, and the revisions of related regulations are interactively influenced by the industry’s performance and its spillover effects on the other hand. By compiling some related evidences from the major Asian casino jurisdictions (Macao, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea), it is revealed that the practice of casino gaming is indeed a combined dynamics of law and its spillover effects

Value Relevance of Financial and Non-Financial Information: Evidence from the Gaming Industry

Using financial and non-financial data from casino gaming firms listed in the United States from 1999–2017, we explore two research questions: (1) Is financial information value relevant to financial markets in the casino gaming industry? (2) Does non-financial information have incremental explanatory power over financial information? In general, we find that accounting numbers can explain a firm’s market value and stock returns in the casino gaming industry, except for accounting accruals, which may behave differently compared to other industries. We also find that non-financial information, such as the number of table games, number of slot machines, and their relative proportion, have significant value relevance in explaining market valuation. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of the value relevance of financial and non-financial information in the casino gaming industry. We also provide analysis of firms characterized by these non-financial attributes. Keywords: hospitality, casino, gaming, value relevance, table games, slot machines JEL Code: L83, M19, M4

How the Seneca Gaming Corporation has Violated its Contract and Broken Its Promises to the City of Buffalo

    Get PDF
The Seneca Gaming Corporation promised the City of Buffalo, in a legally binding contract, that it would construct a tourist destination casino in a park-like setting, market it to out-of-town visitors, and employ large numbers of Buffalonians. However, the idea of a tourist casino in downtown Buffalo was never realistic. The SGC has violated nearly every term in its contract, showing blatant disregard for the City, and its current plans reveal the casino for what it was always destined to be: an urban “convenience” casino located in one of the poorest sections of one of the poorest cities in the nation, drawing almost entirely from local residents, and destroying far more jobs at local businesses than it creates. The costs to the City from this broken contract dramatically outweigh the benefits

On the Public Economics of Casino Gambling

This paper studies casino-style gambling from the public economics point of view in a jurisdiction populated by oligopolistically competitive legal casinos. We consider three different regimes: laissez-faire, entry regulation and tax regulation. The model highlights three important external effects from casino-style gambling: non-casino income creation, social disorder costs, and casino exporting to other jurisdictions. In the generalized case with an endogenously-determined ratio of local to total gamblers, we allow the configuration of casinos to be centralized or jurisdiction-wide dispersed. A complete comparison between equilibrium and command optimum outcomes is provided, and the welfare consequences under the three regimes and two casino configurations are examined.Casino gambling, externalities, oligopoly pricing, entry, tax regulation

Identifying Opportunities To Inform And Inspire: Tribal Casino Employee Perceptions Of Tribal Self Sufficiency And Philanthropy

While the business case for employee engagement and satisfaction is well documented in the service profit chain and the cost savings of employee retention are easily quantified, the means to achieving these related goals in the casino industry is not well known. The pathway to employee engagement and satisfaction is even less well known in the tribal government gaming industry. This paper finds that employees in casinos that are owned by tribal governments in the United States find particular pride in sharing the tribal government’s self-sufficiency, community engagement, and philanthropic activities with casino guests, who often wonder “where the money goes.” The paper supports our case with data collected from tribal casino employees in four Southern California casinos that demonstrate that employees are a good source to share crafted messages with casino guests. We put these philanthropic and charitable contributions in the larger context of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategies that commercial casino companies have implemented through their trade association, the American Gaming Association, in order to manage perceptions of the gambling industry in the United States

Internet Casino-Style Gambling: Is It Legal in Nevada?

The State of Nevada, to retain its position as pace setter in U.S. casino gaming regulation, took important legislative steps to prepare for online gambling. When these legal efforts were discouraged or blocked by the U. S. Department of Justice a new direction emerged. This article traces the shift from implementing online gambling across state lines to intrastate gaming within Nevada with hand-held devices in auxiliary areas of a casino complex beyond the casino floor. Regulatory issues are raised and prospects for inaugurating interactive gaming are discussed

This work presents a clearer way of solving the optimisation problem addressed by Selden and Song (1995)in order to derive the J curve for abatement. The proposed framework is also extended to a two-country model. Results are consistent, also for the two country case, with empirical evidence that shows a positive relationshipbetween environmental quality and economic growth for high income levels. A static comparative analysiscon¿rms that the smaller the rate of discount and/or the less polluting a technology is, the higher the steadystate stock of capital will b e. Moreover, the lack of coop eration is proved to result in smaller e¤ orts to abateemissions.
