Privatising Bratislava: Small Airport - Big Problem

    Get PDF
In the paper we describe genezis of decentralisation and corporatisation of airport sector in the Slovak Republic to reveal circumstances influencing expected decision about Bratislava airport privatisation in 2011. Special attention is devoted to unmasking the political umbrella of process in which - as it is known from other privatisation cases worldwide - there is not sufficient space for expert opinions and judgment. We confront various attitudes regarding to Bratislava Airport privatisation. We also explain Bratislava Airport privatisation in light of overall privatisation status of Slovakian airports. In quantitative way we compare Bratislava Airport performance with the main competitor Vienna Airport that is very often seen as the key problem of Bratislava Airport privatisation with regard to overlapping catchment areas of the airports. Comparison of economic performance, as well as airport charges of both airports is made in the paper. The paper does not try to identify the best privatisation arrangement for Bratislava Airport as it is primarily focused on documenting perplexity and intricacy of privatisation of a small airport that could be a big problem and fiscalized matter. In the paper also some considerations are made with regard to some airports competition issues.airport, privatisation, public-private partnership, spatial competition, Central and Eastern Europe

Leptospira seroprevalence and associations between seropositivity, clinical disease and host factors in horses

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A cross-sectional study was carried out to determine the seroprevalence of different serovars of <it>Leptospira </it>spp. and their association with clinical disease and host factors in Swedish horses.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Sera from 2017 horses brought to equine clinics during 1997–98 were investigated. The sera were examined by microscopic agglutination test for the presence of antibodies against the following <it>L. interrogans </it>serovars: Bratislava strain Jez, Icterohaemorrhagiae strain Kantorowicz and Pomona strain Pomona and also <it>L. kirschneri </it>sv Grippotyphosa strain Duyster and <it>L. borgpetersenii </it>sv Sejroe strain M 84. Host factors, disease factors, season, pasture access and outdoor confinement variables were analysed with respect to seropositivity to sv Bratislava and Icterohaemorrhagiae. Multivariable logistic regression was used to model seropositivity to sv Bratislava and Icterohaemorrhagiae (seroprevalence > 8%).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The seroprevalence, at a cut-off 1:100, were for sv Bratislava (16.6%), Icterohaemorrhagiae (8.3%), Sejroe (1.2%), Pomona (0.5%) and Grippotyphosa (0.4%). In the multivariable analysis, it was demonstrated that seroprevalence increased with age for sv Bratislava and Icterohaemorrhagiae. For sv Bratislava the seasons April – June and October – December and for sv Icterohaemorrhagiae October – December had higher seroprevalences than other seasons. Horses not used for racing had higher levels of seropositivity to sv Bratislava. Furthermore, horses with respiratory problems as well as horses with fatigue had higher levels of seropositivity to sv Bratislava. Ponies and coldbloods, and horses with access to pasture, had lower seroprevalence for sv Icterohaemorrhagiae. Healthy horses had lower seroprevalence for sv Icterohaemorrhagiae, than non-healthy horses.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>There was no significant association between clinical signs and disease and positive titres to sv Bratislava (except for the association between respiratory problems and fatigue and seropositivity to sv Bratislava). The results suggest that horses with increasing age and exposed to factors associated with outdoor life had an increased seroprevalence for sv Bratislava, indicating that horses get infected from outdoor and/or are exposed to shedding from other horses (management dependent). For sv Icterohaemorrhagiae, management possibly plays a role as ponies and coldbloods as well as healthy horses had lower seroprevalence. Overall, the age of the horse should be taken into consideration when evaluating the titre as the average healthy horse has a higher titre than a young horse.</p

Determination of pressure coefficient for a high-rise building with atypical ground plan

    Get PDF
In this article, the results of pressure coefficient on the atypical object obtained by experimental measurements in a boundary layer wind tunnel (BLWT) of Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava (STU) and computational fluid dynamics simulation (CFD) are presented. The pressure coefficient is one of the most important parameters expressing the wind pressure distribution on the structure. The loading by wind can only be acquired by execution of detailed tests and numerical analyses [1].Web of Science14214513

2nd BRATISLAVA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2000 For, beyond the shadow of a doubt, the 2nd Bratislava International Film Festival (1-9 December 2000), under Vladimir Krajniak (director) and Peter Nagel (programmer), is one of the most exciting on the European scene. With 123 films programmed in eight sections at six venues (89 more than in 1999), with a strong international competition of 19 feature films, with a showcase spotlighting "V4" countries (namely, the "Visegrad Four": Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic), with retrospective tributes to Mika Kaurism&auml;ki and Philippine Cinema, with Italy's Stefania Sandrelli and South Africa's Ian Kerkhof among the guests, with a 205-page catalogue and a festival daily, BIFF 2000 easily doubled last year's attendance midway through the festival and wrapped comfortably with over 40,000 visitors. For that matter, Slovak cinema is on the rebound too. Following the downfall in 1998 of nationalist prime minster Vladim&iacute;r Me&#269;iar,..

Long span post-tensioned box girder bridge in Bratislava

    Get PDF
The paper describes an analysis and detailed design of the 470 m long D4 motorway bridge in the Slovak capital Bratislava. This bridge is a part of 2 932.50 m long D4 motorway crossing of the Danube River and its surrounding areas. The 210 m long main span of the post-tensioned three span box girder bridge is the longest span which has ever been built in Slovakia. The Ministry of Transportation and Construction of the Slovak Republic requirement was to cross all future rowing tracks by a single span. The depth of the cross section varies from 4.39 m at span to 13.09 m at piers. 35 m wide cross section carries 4-lane carriageway, median, sidewalk and cycling path. The central part of carriageway is built by the balanced cantilever method. The overhangs carrying outer lanes are built by wing traveller machine and supported by the precast struts. The bridge is currently under construction as a part of PPP project of Bratislava ring road (the motorway D4 Bratislava, Jarovce - Bratislava, Ivanka north section)

Space-time Characteristics of the Fireball from HBT Interferometry

We present the Yano-Koonin-Podgoretskii parametrisation of the correlation function. Compared to the conventionally used Cartesian parametrisation, this one provides more straightforward measurement of the duration of the emission process in the fireball and a clearer signal of the longitudinal expansion, which is expected in ulrarelativistic heavy ion collisions.Comment: 13 pages LaTeX,3 figures incl. with epsf-style.
