AB 109 and its Impact on Prison Overcrowding and Recidivism: A Policy Analysis

    Get PDF
California experienced escalating issues with prison overcrowding from the late 1970s to 2010, as the prison population skyrocketed to unprecedented highs. This article will discuss the problem of prison overcrowding, and one recent policy intervention implemented to decrease overcrowding and offender recidivism rates, the Public Safety Realignment Act (AB 109). After providing background on the Public Safety Realignment Act, this article will analyze the effectiveness of the policy and make recommendations

Development of laboratory rock breakage techniques to relate energy and surface area produced by slow compression, drop hammer and stamp mill. A detailed study of laboratory rotary-percussive drilling in a wide range of rocks under different conditions, with the collection of drill cuttings and measurement of the drill parameters. The correlation of drill parameters with rock indices by energy concepts and the developed empirical formula. Field rotary-percussive drilling studies and collection of drill cuttings on the basis of laboratory analysis

Getting the public involved in Quantum Error Correction

The Decodoku project seeks to let users get hands-on with cutting-edge quantum research through a set of simple puzzle games. The design of these games is explicitly based on the problem of decoding qudit variants of surface codes. This problem is presented such that it can be tackled by players with no prior knowledge of quantum information theory, or any other high-level physics or mathematics. Methods devised by the players to solve the puzzles can then directly be incorporated into decoding algorithms for quantum computation. In this paper we give a brief overview of the novel decoding methods devised by players, and provide short postmortem for Decodoku v1.0-v4.1.Comment: Extended version of article in the proceedings of the GSGS'17 conference (see https://gsgs.ch/gsgs17/

A simple decoder for topological codes

Here we study an efficient algorithm for decoding the topological codes. It is based on a simple principle, which should allow straightforward generalization to complex decoding problems. It is benchmarked with the planar code for both i.i.d. and spatially correlated errors and is found to compare well with existing methods.Comment: v3: Corrected error and added data for correlated errors. v4: Added data for improved version of decoder. This is the published versio

The Full Automorphism Group of a Cyclic pp-gonal Surface

    Get PDF
If pp is prime, a compact Riemann surface XX of genus g≥2g\geq 2 is called cyclic pp-gonal if it admits a cyclic group of automorphisms CpC_{p} of order pp such that the quotient space X/CpX/C_{p} has genus 0. If in addition CpC_{p} is not normal in the full automorphism GG, then we call GG a non-normal cyclic pp-gonal group. In the following we classify all non-normal pp-gonal groups.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure
