    Dissimilarity metric based on local neighboring information and genetic programming for data dissemination in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs)

    This paper presents a novel dissimilarity metric based on local neighboring information and a genetic programming approach for efficient data dissemination in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs). The primary aim of the dissimilarity metric is to replace the Euclidean distance in probabilistic data dissemination schemes, which use the relative Euclidean distance among vehicles to determine the retransmission probability. The novel dissimilarity metric is obtained by applying a metaheuristic genetic programming approach, which provides a formula that maximizes the Pearson Correlation Coefficient between the novel dissimilarity metric and the Euclidean metric in several representative VANET scenarios. Findings show that the obtained dissimilarity metric correlates with the Euclidean distance up to 8.9% better than classical dissimilarity metrics. Moreover, the obtained dissimilarity metric is evaluated when used in well-known data dissemination schemes, such as p-persistence, polynomial and irresponsible algorithm. The obtained dissimilarity metric achieves significant improvements in terms of reachability in comparison with the classical dissimilarity metrics and the Euclidean metric-based schemes in the studied VANET urban scenarios

    Noisy continuous--opinion dynamics

    We study the Deffuant et al. model for continuous--opinion dynamics under the influence of noise. In the original version of this model, individuals meet in random pairwise encounters after which they compromise or not depending of a confidence parameter. Free will is introduced in the form of noisy perturbations: individuals are given the opportunity to change their opinion, with a given probability, to a randomly selected opinion inside the whole opinion space. We derive the master equation of this process. One of the main effects of noise is to induce an order-disorder transition. In the disordered state the opinion distribution tends to be uniform, while for the ordered state a set of well defined opinion groups are formed, although with some opinion spread inside them. Using a linear stability analysis we can derive approximate conditions for the transition between opinion groups and the disordered state. The master equation analysis is compared with direct Monte-Carlo simulations. We find that the master equation and the Monte-Carlo simulations do not always agree due to finite-size induced fluctuations that we analyze in some detail

    Strategic group identification using evolutionary computation

    This paper proposes to identify strategic groups among franchisors from a big set of franchisor variables. Genetic evolutionary computation was used to reduce a set of variables efficiently, and factor analysis was used to make up the strategic groups. Franchise 500 was used as database. The results suggest both that the general map of franchisor has changed since Carney and Gedajlovic鈥檚 study, and that genetic evolutionary computation is a valid way to extract knowledge from a huge set of data. This paper proposes useful information for those retail firms considering internationalization via franchising. The originality of this paper is in the use of Genetic Algorithm to discriminate the final set of variables to be used for the identification of strategic groups instead of evaluating one by one the adequacy of each variable theoretically.     International comparison of R&D investment by European, US and Japanese companies

    Looking across the rapidly developing world, it is even more crucial for companies to benchmark their R&D investment against best international practice in their sector and to understand the ways in which their R&D investment will affect future business performance. The globalisation of technology requires a global analysis involving companies all over the world. In this study, top R&D European, US and Japanese companies are analysed and compared using R&D investment scoreboard reports.     El presente trabajo describe una aplicaci贸n multimedia realizada en el Departamento de Ingenier铆a Electr贸nica de la Escuela Superior de Ingenieros de Sevilla. La herramienta, un CD interactivo, se ha desarrollado con vistas a su empleo como laboratorio virtual y sistema de ayuda en la impartici贸n de un laboratorio de Procesadores Digitales de Se帽al (DSPs). El uso de este CD agiliza el proceso de aprendizaje y/o entrenamiento de los estudiantes en la asignatura, fomentando la participaci贸n de los alumnos en el mismo. El material did谩ctico se emplea en la actualidad, con gran 茅xito, en las clases pr谩cticas de la asignatura "Complemento de Sistemas Electr贸nicos Digitales", de tercer curso de Ingeniero de Telecomunicaci贸nThis paper describes a multimedia application developed by the department of Electronic Engineering at the University of Seville. This tool, an interactive CD, has been developed as a virtual laboratory utility and as tutorial in a Digital Signal Processors laboratory. The CD employment improves the learning process of the students, and it foments the students麓 participation.     Learning achievemen ts using a pbl - based methodology in an introductory electronic course

    Teaching electronics in an introductory course is classically implemented by means of theoretical classes to settle the basics of analog and digital electronics. This approach has shown not to be much attractive, especially on a global course targeted for many different students, not specifically interested in electronics. A new course has been developed, based on a top-down learning strategy and the implementation of a pbl-based experience. This course has been held since 2011, with very good results, in terms of academic achievement and interest shown by the students. Results are presented,showing the success obtained with this methodology

    El uso combinado de herramientas docentes que combinen la ense帽anza te贸rica y pr谩ctica se ha mostrado, en general, superior a otras metodolog铆as docentes de tipo eminentemente te贸rico o pr谩ctico. Un ejemplo especialmente interesante de esta superioridad como metodolog铆a docente es la ense帽anza de sistemas electr贸nicos digitales y, en concreto, el aprendizaje sobre el manejo y uso de los microprocesadores. En este trabajo se desarrolla una metodolog铆a docente para el aprendizaje de microcontroladores que combina y alterna clases te贸ricas y pr谩cticas. Para ello, se han elaborado un conjunto de sistemas hardware, complementados con aplicaciones software que se presentan asimismo en el art铆culo y que permiten la implementaci贸n en el aula de la metodolog铆a docente dise帽ad
