What is the value of an operator training simulator in oil & gas industry? What are the economical and HSE benefits of successful simulator training? How much can be earned or saved by the use of training simulators? How large increase in productivity and effectiveness can be gained? This article reviews the OTS practices and quantifies the benefits of the OTS use based on a survey conducted in the Norwegian Oil & Gas industry during fall 2011

Distinguishing pedigree relationships via multi-way identity by descent sharing and sex-specific genetic maps

The proportion of samples with one or more close relatives in a genetic dataset increases rapidly with sample size, necessitating relatedness modeling and enabling pedigree-based analyses. Despite this, relatives are generally unreported and current inference methods typically detect only the degree of relatedness of sample pairs and not pedigree relationships. We developed CREST, an accurate and fast method that identifies the pedigree relationships of close relatives. CREST utilizes identity by descent (IBD) segments shared between a pair of samples and their mutual relatives, leveraging the fact that sharing rates among these individuals differ across pedigree configurations. Furthermore, CREST exploits the profound differences in sex-specific genetic maps to classify pairs as maternally or paternally related‚ÄĒe.g., paternal half-siblings‚ÄĒusing the locations of autosomal IBD segments shared between the pair. In simulated data, CREST correctly classifies 91.5%‚Äď100% of grandparent-grandchild (GP) pairs, 80.0%‚Äď97.5% of avuncular (AV) pairs, and 75.5%‚Äď98.5% of half-siblings (HS) pairs compared to PADRE‚Äôs rates of 38.5%‚Äď76.0% of GP, 60.5%‚Äď92.0% of AV, 73.0%‚Äď95.0% of HS pairs. Turning to the real 20,032 sample Generation Scotland (GS) dataset, CREST identified seven pedigrees with incorrect relationship types or maternal/paternal parent sexes, five of which we confirmed as mistakes, and two with uncertain relationships. After correcting these, CREST correctly determines relationship types for 93.5% of GP, 97.7% of AV, and 92.2% of HS pairs that have sufficient mutual relative data; the parent sex in 100% of HS and 99.6% of GP pairs; and it completes this analysis in 2.8¬†h including IBD detection in eight threads

Learning and working are two significant social networks in preparing individuals for future life. An understanding of learning in the workplace can inform how we organize institutional learning in order to produce competent and relevant vocational education and training (VET) graduates for the world of work. This paper explores the existing collaborative activities in the masters in vocational pedagogy (MVP) study program at Kyambogo University in Uganda and their linkage with workplaces. Two research questions were posed. (1) What collaborative activities are there in the MVP program that allow for learning in vocational teacher training institutions (VTIs) and workplaces? 2) How is knowledge constructed amongst the participating actors? The questions were investigated through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with purposively sampled participants. An analysis of the documents from the MVP project, including program reports, collaborating stakeholders meeting minutes and students’ theses, was done. The findings revealed that field expeditions and action research (AR) projects were the key activities incorporated in the MVP program to support the back and forth learning from workplaces. Through interactions and sharing practices, these activities promoted learning by solving problems encountered at work and by doing real life tasks

Læringskultur - suksessfaktor for å lykkes i fremtiden?
