The Sacca di Goito graveyard: updates on the late 4th to early 5th century phase In addition to an extensive Lombard period cemetery, the archaeological excavations carried out between 1990 and 1993 at Sacca di Goito (MN) brought to light an older burial ground that can be dated to the late 4th and early 5th century. The thirty-eight burials of this phase are placed at a certain distance from each other, with a north-south orientation; around the skeletons blackish stains were sometimes visible, produced by the disintegration of organic material, probably traces of coffins. The grave goods include clothing accessories, personal ornaments, metal artefacts and glass, pottery and bronze vessels. In the context of contemporary Italian archaeological evidence, the presence of brooches associated with the archaeological cultures of Černjachov-Sîntana de Mureş and mirrors with pierced grips linked to the traditions of the Alano-Sarmatian people is exceptional. Other finds indicate the use of Italic manufactured articles and the acquisition of local customs. In some of the male burials there are also objects that seem to be military in character

The communicative potential of the exposed writings is amplified or made more explicit by their location: in the cathedral complex of Milan, the choice of placing internally inscribed burials and funerary epigraphs in the path that connects the baptistery to the cathedral of S. Tecla seems motivated by the liturgical functionality of that connection; in the private oratory of SS. Primo and Feliciano in Leggiuno (VA) the exposition of a Roman inscription supports the value of Carolingian epigraphs that resume their calligraphic quality

In 1574, the demolition of the altar of the Romanesque baptistery of St. John the Baptist in Mariano Comense led to the discovery of a stone capsule in the form of a sarcophagus, now kept in the parish archives; the reliquary contained fragments of figured silver-leaflets, the remains of a bone box, and textile fragments. The contribution reconsiders the capsella and its contents, also proposing a reconstruction of the bone cassette to which the silver laminettes were attached

The contribution deepens our knowledge of the five early Christian epigraphs from Milan that feature graffiti depictions of prayers. The best known and best defined was found in the excavation contexts of S. Eustorgio, from which another fragment with a praying figure also comes. The iconographic motif is also found in an epigraph from S. Calimero, in one from S. Ambrogio and in one found in Via Olmetto

The structure of an early medieval tomb recently found in Bergamo, near the cathedral complex, reuses an epigraphic fragment. The fragment preserves part of the funerary inscription of a child deposed in 460 a. D., another epitaph, of which only the name of the deceased remains, and a subsequent memorial graffito. The contribution focuses in particular on considering the older text, in which the refined language poses some problems of integration and understanding

Since the 4th century and then above all with the arrival of Goths and Lombards, the linguistic panorama of northern Italy is enriched with talks of Germanic stock of which still today remain traces in toponymy and linguistic loans transmitted to Italian. Among the sources that give us the possibility to reconstruct those lost languages, the anthroponymy preserved also by the epigraphic documentation offers precious evidences. The particular modalities of composition of the "talking names" that identify individuals, the meanings to which they refer, their use to mean parental relationships, also offer an interesting insight into the social habits of those peoples
