In Mediation Cartographies of Architecture Exhibition Events, the informative geographies that stratify Architecture Events are explored, creating a comparative database between two of those whom mark, in particular, the European contemporaneousness of Exhibition Events: The Venice Biennale and The Lisbon Triennale. Following a gradual approach toward the theme - which contextualizes it - this study proposes the "deconstruction" of these Architecture Exhibition Events for the 2006 to 2016 period, for the "construction" of an informative map divided by eleven analyzing sub-themes - for each of one, the two case studies are analyzed both individually and then together. With this, it is proposed to recognize the Mediation scenarios in which Events are developed and related, articulating contributions from Architecture, Communication and related fields. The projection of this "cartography" may enable an interpretive (re)-reading of these Events, (re)- positioning them in Space-Time, in a set Mode and re-emphasizing the fundamental role of Mediators in defining the complex dynamic processes that characterize Architecture Exhibition Events. This whole analysis can, thus, contribute to a setting geometry towards a possible way in understanding the interaction processes that lay inherent between The Venice Biennial and The Lisbon Triennial, and of these relating to other Events

The effects of acidity on recent changes in carbon cycling in organic soils

There has been an observed increase in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in soil solutions and surface water bodies in acid sensitive areas of Europe and North America over the past four decades. This has been linked to changes in atmospheric chemistry and associated acid deposition, due to increased solubility of DOC in response to recovery from acidification. However, as DOC production (and consumption) is under biological control through the decomposition (and mineralisation) of organic material, there is uncertainty as to whether this increasing DOC trend is solely a chemical (solubility) response or whether there is a biological element also . In addition, there have been inconsistencies in DOC release from catchments receiving similar acid deposition loads, which suggests that differences in catchment characteristics may result in variations in the magnitude of response to acidification and recovery. Despite this and that fact that many catchments consist of peat and organo-mineral soil, much research has focused solely on peat. In order to investigate both the chemical and biological responses to changing acidity behind these DOC trends, an acidity manipulation field experiment was run over two National Parks with contrasting historical pollution levels, which included both peat and peaty podzol soil. The chemistry of pore water, as well as soil and surface litter extracts, were monitored alongside a decomposition experiment to separate out the changing solubility of DOC from the biological production through decomposition. Bacterial and fungal communities were also sequenced to assess how microbial communities were affected by changes in acidity. There was a clear chemically mediated DOC response to acidity in pore water, supporting previous findings and building on evidence of the pH-DOC hypothesis that recovery from acidification is increasing DOC solubility in organic soils. The DOC in the upper organic layer of peat and organo-mineral soil was found to be acid sensitive, but the surface litter DOC was not. However, overall there were limited responses of litter decomposition, Tea Bag Index (TBI) parameters and microbial diversity to acidity manipulations, and so there is little evidence that short-term changes in acidity effect microbial communities and biologically mediated processes (decomposition and associated DOC production). Regardless of experimental insignificance, bacterial community diversity was found to be positively and significantly related to both soil pH and extract DOC, which suggests that there may be a functional response to changing acidity as well as changes in community structure. Further work is needed to assess the mechanistic functional response of bacteria in terms of DOC production and consumption in response to changing acidity

In this paper, we demonstrate how atypical visual representations of a triangle, square or a parallelogram may hinder students’ understanding of a median and altitude. We analyze responses and reasoning given by 16 preservice middle school teachers in a Geometry Connection class. Particularly, the data were garnered from three specific questions posed on a cumulative final exam, which focused on computing and comparing areas of parallelograms, and triangles represented by atypical images. We use the notions of concept image and concept definition as our theoretical framework for an analysis of the students’ responses. Our findings have implication on how typical images can impact students’ cognitive process and their concept image. We provide a number of suggestions that can foster conceptualization of the notions of median and altitude in a triangle that can be realized in an enacted lesson

‘Bloodwood’ and ‘Liminal Spaces, Timeless Places: Abjection, Liminality and Landscape in Australian Gothic Fiction’

This creative honours project comprises a work of fiction titled ‘Bloodwood’ and an accompanying exegetical essay, exploring the concept of liminal space within the Australian landscape. It investigates the anxieties and consequences of past trauma that linger within the landscape of modern Australia, exploring themes such as time, connection to nature, trauma and grief. Using Julia Kristeva’s abjection theory, particularly her ideas on liminal space, this work addresses the contentious issue of postcolonial theory within the field of literary studies, as well as the concept of grief as a liminal process. These ideas are explored through the storylines of three interwoven protagonists, as they each navigate their own altered realities following personal trauma or loss, within a shared physical landscape. Abjection, as well as other elements of the Australian Gothic literary genre, is used to convey discomfort and unease within the landscape, linking the three separate protagonists to an established site of trauma. The project also delves into ecocriticism to address ways in which the Australian landscape is viewed and represented within Australian gothic literature. This thesis was conducted using a practice-led research, research-led practice methodology combined with textual analysis of several key works within the genre of the Australian Gothic, analysed using the framework of Kristeva’s abjection theory, which in-turn influenced the writing of the creative piece ‘Bloodwood’
