Potential isomorphism and semi-proper trees
We study a notion of potential isomorphism, where two structures are said to
be potentially isomorphic if they are isomorphic in some generic extension that
preserves stationary sets and does not add new sets of cardinality less than
the cardinality of the models. We introduce the notions of semi-proper and
weakly semi-proper trees, and note that there is a strong connection between
the existence of potentially isomorphic models for a given complete theory and
the existence of weakly semi-proper trees. We prove the existence of
semi-proper trees under certain cardinal arithmetic assumptions. We also show
the consistency of the non-existence of weakly semi-proper trees assuming the
consistency of some large cardinals
FOXTAIL: Modeling the nonlinear interaction between Alfv\'en eigenmodes and energetic particles in tokamaks
FOXTAIL is a new hybrid magnetohydrodynamic-kinetic code used to describe
interactions between energetic particles and Alfv\'en eigenmodes in tokamaks
with realistic geometries. The code simulates the nonlinear dynamics of the
amplitudes of individual eigenmodes and of a set of discrete markers in
five-dimensional phase space representing the energetic particle distribution.
Action-angle coordinates of the equilibrium system are used for efficient
tracing of energetic particles, and the particle acceleration by the wave
fields of the eigenmodes is Fourier decomposed in the same angles. The
eigenmodes are described using temporally constant eigenfunctions with dynamic
complex amplitudes. Possible applications of the code are presented, e.g.,
making a quantitative validity evaluation of the one-dimensional bump-on-tail
approximation of the system. Expected effects of the fulfillment of the
Chirikov criterion in two-mode scenarios have also been verified.Comment: Preprint submitted to Computer Physics Communications on June 3, 201
Metal Lines in Cosmological Models of Lyman-Alpha Absorbers
The metal absorption lines found in association with \lya absorbers of
moderate to high HI column density contain valuable information about the
metallicity and ionization conditions within the absorbers and offer a stronger
test of models of the intergalactic medium at \sim 3 than HI absorption lines
alone.
We have developed a method to predict the strengths of metal absorption lines
within the framework of cosmological models for the \lya forest. The method
consists of evaluating a quantity, the Line Observability Index, for a database
of hundreds of candidate metal lines, allowing a comprehensive identification
of the lines the model predicts to be detectable associated with a \lya
absorber of a given HI column density and metallicity.
Applying this technique to a particular class of models at \sim 2-4, we
predict that the OVI(1032 \AA, 1038 \AA) doublet is the only practical probe of
the metallicity of low column density absorbers (HI \simlt 10^{14.5} cm^{-2}\lambda_r >
1216, and that the strongest metal lines should be
CIII(977 \AA) and SiIII(1206.5 \AA), which peak at HI \sim 10^{17} cm^{-2}$.Comment: To appear in the proceedings from the 13th IAP Workshop (1-5 July

50 vuotta sosiaaliturvan tutkimusta Kelassa
Does the public discuss other topics on climate change than researchers? A comparison of explorative networks based on author keywords and hashtags
Twitter accounts have already been used in many scientometric studies, but
the meaningfulness of the data for societal impact measurements in research
evaluation has been questioned. Earlier research focused on social media counts
and neglected the interactive nature of the data. We explore a new network
approach based on Twitter data in which we compare author keywords to hashtags
as indicators of topics. We analyze the topics of tweeted publications and
compare them with the topics of all publications (tweeted and not tweeted). Our
exploratory study is based on a comprehensive publication set of climate change
research. We are interested in whether Twitter data are able to reveal topics
of public discussions which can be separated from research-focused topics. We
find that the most tweeted topics regarding climate change research focus on
the consequences of climate change for humans. Twitter users are interested in
climate change publications which forecast effects of a changing climate on the
environment and to adaptation, mitigation and management issues rather than in
the methodology of climate-change research and causes of climate change. Our
results indicate that publications using scientific jargon are less likely to
be tweeted than publications using more general keywords. Twitter networks seem
to be able to visualize public discussions about specific topics.Comment: 31 pages, 1 table, and 7 figure
A mind of care: Responding ethically to COVID-19
This article approaches issues arising out of being in the middle of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Finland in March 2020, both from the point of view of the lived experience of caring for people in our conference setting, and through analysing the statements and actions of the Finnish government from the point of view of an ethics of care. It argues that an ethics of care approach is better equipped at dealing with thinking about and understanding complex life situations such as the spread of the pandemic than what the standardised taxonomy approaches offer. It further states that an ethics of care not only provides concepts and frameworks that help people grapple with challenging situations in an ethical manner, it also enables us to imagine how hospitality and solidarity can be envisioned anew
