When it comes to an athlete’s weight, a few grams can make a vital difference to their chances of winning. In some sports, an athlete’s body mass puts them within a strictly defined weight classification. In combat sports such as boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA), this is done to match participants to equal competitors in terms of size, strength and agility and make sure winning comes down to skill (as much as is possible

    Root data with group actions

Suppose kk is a field, GG is a connected reductive algebraic kk-group, TT is a maximal kk-torus in GG, and Γ\Gamma is a finite group that acts on (G,T)(G,T). From the above, one obtains a root datum Ψ\Psi on which Gal(k)×Γ\text{Gal}(k)\times\Gamma acts. Provided that Γ\Gamma preserves a positive system in Ψ\Psi, not necessarily invariant under Gal(k)\text{Gal}(k), we construct an inverse to this process. That is, given a root datum on which Gal(k)×Γ\text{Gal}(k)\times\Gamma acts appropriately, we show how to construct a pair (G,T)(G,T), on which Γ\Gamma acts as above. Although the pair (G,T)(G,T) and the action of Γ\Gamma are canonical only up to an equivalence relation, we construct a particular pair for which GG is kk-quasisplit and Γ\Gamma fixes a Gal(k)\text{Gal}(k)-stable pinning of GG. Using these choices, we can define a notion of taking "Γ\Gamma-fixed points" at the level of equivalence classes, and this process is compatible with a general "restriction" process for root data with Γ\Gamma-action.Comment: v2: one word inserted, one citation inserted, one reference updated, one misspelling correcte

Evaluation of an Oral Health Training Program for School Nurses

Pediatric dental disease is a silent epidemic (Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, 2002). Dental decay is commonly unrecognized and under-treated. Dental disease can affect children\u27s growth and development as well as their ability to perform in school. Effective interventions to prevent dental decay include water fluoridation, dental sealants, pediatric dental screenings, and dental health education programs. This pre-experimental design study evaluated the effectiveness of an oral health training program for school nurses. This training program was designed based on the First 5 California Oral Health Training Program, First Smiles (First Smiles Program of California, 2003). The presentation was given to a non-randomized sample of school nurses (N= 14). Pre and post test results indicated a statistically significant (p\u3c.Ol) increase in oral health knowledge among the participants. As a result of this study the researchers recommend that school nurses receive formal training in dental health assessments to effectively contribute to the improvement of pediatric oral health in the school setting

Laura discusses the work she and her colleagues did in a qualitative study of semi-structured interviews examining the unique, information-seeking characteristics of basic sciences researchers. The team\u27s ultimate goal was to then design a suite of library services that would better meet these researchers\u27 needs

Galleries, Hall-Littlewood polynomials and structure constants of the spherical Hecke algebra

We provide a combinatorial description of the coefficients appearing in the expansion of Hall-Littlewood polynomials in terms of monomial symmetric functions. We also give a Littlewood-Richardson rule for Hall-Littlewood polynomials. For proving this we use galleries to calculate Satake coefficients and structure constants of spherical Hecke algebras with arbitrary parameters.Comment: 28 pages, v3: revised version, to appear in IMR
