    The coupling effects of kinematics and flexibility on the Lagrangian dynamic formulation of open chain deformable links

    A nonlinear Lagrangian formulation for the spatial kinematic and dynamic analysis of open chain deformable links consisting of cylindrical joints that connect pairs of flexible links is developed. The special cases of revolute or prismatic joint can also be obtained from the kinematic equations. The kinematic equations are described using a 4x4 matrix method. The configuration of each deformable link in the open loop kinematic chain is identified using a coupled set of relative joint variables, constant geometric parameters, and elastic coordinates. The elastic coordinates define the link deformation with respect to a selected joint coordinate system that is consistent with the kinematic constraints on the boundary of the deformable link. These coordinates can be introduced using approximation techniques such as Rayleigh-Ritz method, finite element technique or any other desired approach. The large relative motion between two neighboring links are defined by a set of joint coordinates which describes the large relative translational and rotational motion between two neighboring joint coordinate systems. The origin of these coordinate systems are rigidly attached to the neighboring links at the joint definition points along the axis of motion

    Density dependence of the pairing interaction and pairing correlation in unstable nuclei

    This work aims at a global assessment of the effect of the density dependence of the zero-range pairing interaction. Systematic Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations with the volume, surface and mixed pairing forces are carried out to study the pairing gaps in even-even nuclei over the whole nuclear chart. Calculations are also done in coordinate representation for unstable semi-magic even-even nuclei. The calculated pairing gaps are compared with empirical values from four different odd-even staggering formulae. Calculations with the three pairing interactions are comparable for most nuclei close to β\beta-stability line. However, the surface interaction calculations predict neutron pairing gaps in neutron-rich nuclei that are significantly stronger than those given by the mixed and volume pairing. On the other hand, calculations with volume and mixed pairing forces show noticeable reduction of neutron pairing gaps in nuclei far from the stability.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables, printer-friendl

    A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning is one of John Donne’s most celebrated and most significant poems in which he declares, quite ingeniously, his ideal of spiritual love which transcends the ordinary and inferior love of others that is based on mere physicality. This essay applies New Historicism, a school of literary theory since the early 1980s, to Donne’s seventeenth-century poem. The study begins with elaborating on the major concepts and principles of New Historicism. Then, the historical, cultural and biographical circumstances that surrounded and motivated the composition of Donne’s poem are discussed. Finally, the discourses of religion, science, love, sexuality, space and time and the circulation of power implicit in the compass imagery, the metaphysical conceit used in this poem, are explored

    Community perceptions on substance abuse by underage

    In the spring of 2015, the Community Awareness and Prevention Association (C.A.P.A.), and westshore young leaders network (WYLN) developed and conducted a Community Perception Survey (CPS) of adult residents in the suburbs of Lakewood, Rocky River, Fairview Park, Bay Village, Westlake, and North Olmsted. The purpose of the survey was to assess attitudes and opinions about substance abuse and prevention efforts of WYLN. The survey was both anonymous and confidential. The CPS resulted in 955 usable data which were analyzed and visualized at CSU. The results showed a strong perception of alcohol abuse and accessibility to alcohol for teens by other parents. Women were more likely to perceive greater access and abuse of alcohol by teens than men, and men were more permissive with the use of alcohol by teenagers. Parents with children from grade 9 up to college were also more likely to perceive alcohol as a greater threat and were more involved/aware of community preventive efforts.https://engagedscholarship.csuohio.edu/u_poster_2015/1051/thumbnail.jp

    Stress-Based Topology Optimization of Steel-Frame Structures Using Members with Standard Cross Sections: Gradient-Based Approach

    This article presents a computationally efficient methodology for stress-based topology optimization of steel frame structures with cross-sectional properties that are mapped from I-beam sections of a design manual. To account for the natural variability of the data, this mapping is achieved via quantile regression to derive continuous relationships between cross-sectional area (the design variable) and other section properties. These relationships are used for deriving the gradient of structural performance, which allows using computationally efficient gradient-based optimization schemes. Three frame structures are designed using the proposed algorithm, the resulting designs are compared with traditional compliance-based topology optimization algorithms, and changes in the designs are discussed. A comparison of stress distribution within the designed structures verified the effectiveness of the proposed methodology
