Controlling statistical properties of stored light
Statistical properties of outgoing light pulses are studies after they have
been stored in a medium of atoms in the tripod configuration. A generalized
Hong-Ou-Mandel interference, storing of squeezed states and homodyne signal
analysis are discussed in the context of their dependence on the parameters of
the control fields used for light storage and release.Comment: 5 figure
Cities and Disturbed Areas as Man-made Shelters for Orchid Communities
Many species from the family Orchidaceae spread in anthropogenic habitats and numerous studies documenting this process are known. Unfortunately, such data are scattered throughout various papers and reports, sometimes fragmentary and hard to reach (the ‘grey literature’). Scientific elaboration on this topic still lacks a comprehensive review and summary of the scale of this phenomenon. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to gather, review and analyse such data, seeking the answer to the question whether the man-made habitats can be considered as refugee for orchids. The paper summarises data on the occurrence of orchid species in man-made habitats in Europe originating from published and unpublished sources. The particular emphasis was placed in urban habitats. For this purpose, the floristically data from 42 European cities were used. The conducted studies showed that the apohytism phenomenon in the family Orchidaceae was more widespread than had been previously reported. As a result, 70 species of orchids in the distinguished man-made habitats were found. The majority of the species grow on sand and clay pits. The most common species were Epipactis helleborine and Dactylorhiza majalis. The gathered data have confirmed that man-made habitats become refugee for many orchid species in the aftermath of the loss of their natural habitats. Thus, protection of sites transformed by man with orchid occurrence should be taken into consideration. These sites can become a source of very useful information for biogeographically and phylo-geographically analyses of many valuable and endangered species
The microbiome profiling of fungivorous black tinder fungus beetle Bolitophagus reticulatus reveals the insight into bacterial communities associated with larvae and adults
Saproxylic beetles play a crucial role in key processes occurring in forest ecosystems, and together with fungi contribute to the decomposition and mineralization of wood. Among this group are mycetophilic beetles which associate with wood-decaying fungi and use the fruiting body for nourishment and development. Therefore, their feeding strategy (especially in the case of fungivorous species) requires special digestive capabilities to take advantage of the nutritional value of fungal tissue. Although polypore-beetle associations have been investigated in numerous studies, detailed studies focusing on the microbiome associated with species feeding on fruiting bodies of polypores remain limited. Here we investigated the bacterial communities associated with larvae and adults of Bolitophagus reticulatus collected from Fomes fomentarius growing on two different host tree: beech (Fagus sp.) and birch (Betula sp.), respectively. Among 24 identified bacterial phyla, three were the most relatively abundant (Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes). Moreover, we tried to find unique patterns of bacteria abundances which could be correlated with the long-term field observation showing that the fruiting bodies of F. fomentarius, growing on birch are more inhabited by beetles than fruiting bodies of the same fungus species growing on beech. Biochemical analyses showed that the level of protease inhibitors and secondary metabolites in F. fomentarius is higher in healthy fruiting bodies than in the inhabited ones. However, tested microbiome samples primarily clustered by developmental stage of B. reticulatus and host tree did not appear to impact the taxonomic distribution of the communities. This observation was supported by statistical analyses
Combining short-term manipulative experiments with long-term palaeoecological investigations at high resolution to assess the response of Sphagnum peatlands to drought, fire and warming
International audienceNorthern hemisphere peatlands are substantial carbon stores. However, recent climate change and human impacts (e.g., drainage and atmospheric nutrient deposition) may trigger the emission of their stored carbon to the atmosphere. Biodiversity losses are also an important consequence of those changes. Therefore, there is a need to recognise these processes in space and time. Global change experiments are often conducted to improve our understanding of the potential responses of various ecosystems to global warming and drought. Most of the experiments carried out in peatlands are focused on carbon balance and nitrogen deposition. Nevertheless, it is still unclear how fast peatlands respond to temperature changes and water-table lowering in the continental climate setting. This is important because continental regions account for a significant proportion of all northern hemisphere peatlands. A combination of short-term and long-term approaches in a single research project is especially helpful because it facilitates the correct interpretation of experimental data. Here we describe the CLIMPEAT project-a manipulative field experiment in a Sphagnum-dominated peatland supported by a high-resolution multi-proxy palaeoecological study. The design of the field experiment (e.g., treatments), methodology and biogeographical setting are presented. We suggest it is beneficial to support field experiments with an investigation of past environmental changes in the studied ecosystem, as human impacts during the past 300 years have already caused substantial changes in ecosystem functioning which may condition the response in experimental studies
Synthesis of titanate nanostructures using amorphous precursor material and their adsorption/photocatalytic properties
This paper reports on a new and swift hydrothermal chemical route to prepare
titanate nanostructures (TNS) avoiding the use of crystalline TiO2 as starting
material. The synthesis approach uses a commercial solution of TiCl3 as
titanium source to prepare an amorphous precursor, circumventing the use of
hazardous chemical compounds. The influence of the reaction temperature and
dwell autoclave time on the structure and morphology of the synthesised
materials was studied. Homogeneous titanate nanotubes with a high
length/diameter aspect ratio were synthesised at 160^{\circ}C and 24 h. A band
gap of 3.06\pm0.03 eV was determined for the TNS samples prepared in these
experimental conditions. This value is red shifted by 0.14 eV compared to the
band gap value usually reported for the TiO2 anatase. Moreover, such samples
show better adsorption capacity and photocatalytic performance on the dye
rhodamine 6G (R6G) photodegradation process than TiO2 nanoparticles. A 98%
reduction of the R6G concentration was achieved after 45 minutes of irradiation
of a 10 ppm dye aqueous solution and 1 g/L of TNS catalyst.Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Journal of

Wpływ stałej elektrostymulacji serca na parametry hemodynamiczne i jakość życia u pacjentów z utrwalonym migotaniem przedsionków
Wstęp: Jedną z najczęściej występujących arytmii nadkomorowych jest migotanie
przedsionków (AF). Arytmia ta może doprowadzić do istotnych zaburzeń hemodynamicznych,
a nawet tachykardiomiopatii.
Materiał i metody: Badaniami objęto 55 pacjentów (28 mężczyzn i 27 kobiet)
w wieku 52–86 lat (śr 72 ± 7,1 roku). Badanie echokardiograficzne wykonywano przy
dwóch trybach stymulacji: VVI 40/min i VVI 80/min w celu oceny wpływu stabilizacji
rytmu na parametry hemodynamiczne serca. Oceniano: objętość wyrzutową - SV (ml),
pojemność minutową serca - CO (l/min) oraz wskaźnik sercowy - CI (l/min/m2). Nie
określono frakcji wyrzutowej lewej komory. Jej zastosowanie może mieć większe
znaczenie w monitorowaniu wpływu stałej stymulacji VVI 80/min na funkcję lewej
komory, np. podczas 3-miesięcznej obserwacji. U każdego pacjenta oceniano jakość
życia w czasie 7-dniowej obserwacji przy stymulacji VVI 40/min i VVI 80/min według
własnego kwestionariusza pytań.
Wyniki: W czasie stymulacji VVI 80/min stwierdzono istotnie statystyczne
wyższe wartości CO (l/min): VVI 40/min = 5,04 ± 1,87 vs. VVI 80/min = 5,8 ± 2,1
(p < 0,01) i CI (l/min/m2): VVI 40/min = 2,78 ± 1,23 vs. VVI 80/min = 3,22 ± 1,23
(p < 0,01). Objętość wyrzutowa była nieistotnie większa u pacjentów z własnym
AF.
Wnioski: Stabilizacja rytmu serca u pacjentów z AF wpływa na poprawę parametrów
hemodynamicznych (CO i CI) w badaniu echokardiograficznym. Stymulacja VVI 80/min
istotnie redukuje większość dolegliwości związanych z szybką i niemiarową pracą
serca u pacjentów z AF w obserwacji 7-dniowej. (Folia Cardiol. 2004; 11: 169–176
