Approximate QR-based algorithms for recursive nonlinear least squares estiamtion
This paper proposes new approximate QR-based algorithms for recursive nonlinear least squares (NLS) estimation. Two QR decomposition-based recursive algorithms are introduced based on the classical Gauss-Newton (GN) and Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithms in nonlinear unconstrained optimization or least squares problems. Instead of using the matrix inversion formula, recursive QR decomposition is employed, which is known to be numerically more stable in finite wordlength implementation. A family of p-A-QR-LS algorithms is then proposed to solve the LS problem resulting from the linearization of the NLS problem. It achieves different complexity-performance tradeoffs by retaining different number of diagonal plus off-diagonals (denoted by an integer p) of the triangular factor of the augmented data matrix. Simulation results on identifying a nonlinear perceptron are provided to illustrate the principle of the new algorithms. © 2005 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

Improving the energy efficiency of room air conditioners in China: Costs and benefits
China is the world's largest consumer of room air conditioners, and it contributes about a quarter of global space cooling CO2 emissions. We model the costs and benefits of recently proposed new room air conditioner minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) in China. Our results suggest that newly proposed MEPS brings accumulative CO2 emissions reductions of 12.8% between 2019 and 2050, and accumulative bill saving of 2620 billion RMB to China's consumers. The benefits of the proposed MEPS decrease with longer MEPS revision intervals and increase with shorter intervals—indicating that the intervals should be balanced to maximize benefits while accommodating constraints due to air conditioner manufacturer design cycles. We also model potential nationwide benefits from higher MEPS. Across two increasingly aggressive MEPS scenarios, China's room air conditioner electricity consumption and CO2 emissions in 2050 are both reduced by 15–53% compared to the proposed MEPS. The highest-efficiency scenario (reaching MEPS of annual performance factor 5.4 in 2025) provides the largest long-term national benefits. These results could inform development of a Chinese regulatory regime that effectively updates room air conditioner MEPS. Because China is the world's largest manufacturer of room air conditioners, the economic, energy, and emissions benefits resulting from higher Chinese MEPS could also have a global reach
Nanocoating of montmorillonite/Mg-β-tricalcium phosphate on orthodontic titanium miniscrews
Mini-implants (1-2 mm in diameter) are miniscrews that are placed in the jaw bones to help Orthodontists move teeth in a controlled manner. The reasons behind their increasing popularity over the past decade is that mini-implants are easily placed and removed under local anaesthetic and can withstand up to 300g force. Unfortunately, their high rate of failure (10-30%) poses a problem to clinicians and their patients alike. Advances in the field of nanotechnology presented a wide range of solutions to biological problems. We developed a nanocoating of nanoclay reinforced magnesium substituted β-TCP on titanium surface to enhance the stability of orthodontic miniscrews. ©2010 IEEE.published_or_final_versionThe 3rd IEEE International NanoElectronics Conference (INEC), Hong Kong, 3-8 January 2010. Monitoring iron chelation effect in hearts of thalassaemia patients with improved sensitivity using reduced transverse relaxation rate (RR2)
Posters - Myocardial Viability: Human Models: No. 3660Accurate MRI characterization of myocardial iron is needed to improve the diagnosis and management of thalassaemia patients with transfusional iron overload. This study aimed to demonstrate that a new transverse relaxation index, the reduced R2 (RR2) that is estimated from non-monoexponential multi-echo CPMG signal decay and sensitive to ferritin iron, could detect the myocardial iron changes immediately following 1-week iron chelation suspension in thalassaemia patients at 3T.postprin
Self-rated health in middle-aged and elderly Chinese : distribution, determinants and associations with cardio-metabolic risk factors
Background: Self-rated health (SRH) has been demonstrated to be an accurate reflection of a person's health and a valid predictor of incident mortality and chronic morbidity. We aimed to evaluate the distribution and factors associated with SRH and its association with biomarkers of cardio-metabolic diseases among middle-aged and elderly Chinese.
Methods: Survey of 1,458 men and 1,831 women aged 50 to 70 years, conducted in one urban and two rural areas of Beijing and Shanghai in 2005. SRH status was measured and categorized as good (very good and good) vs. not good (fair, poor and very poor). Determinants of SRH and associations with biomarkers of cardio-metabolic diseases were evaluated using logistic regression.
Results: Thirty two percent of participants reported good SRH. Males and rural residents tended to report good SRH. After adjusting for potential confounders, residence, physical activity, employment status, sleep quality and presence of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and depression were the main determinants of SRH. Those free from cardiovascular disease (OR 3.68; 95%CI 2.39; 5.66), rural residents (OR 1.89; 95% CI 1.47; 2.43), non-depressed participants (OR 2.50; 95% CI 1.67; 3.73) and those with good sleep quality (OR 2.95; 95% CI 2.22; 3.91) had almost twice or over the chance of reporting good SRH compared to their counterparts. There were significant associations -and trend- between SRH and levels of inflammatory markers, insulin levels and insulin resistance.
Conclusion: Only one third of middle-aged and elderly Chinese assessed their health status as good or very good. Although further longitudinal studies are required to confirm our findings, interventions targeting social inequalities, lifestyle patterns might not only contribute to prevent chronic morbidity but as well to improve populations' perceived health
Magnetoelectric interaction and transport behaviours in magnetic nanocomposite thermoelectric materials
How to suppress the performance deterioration of thermoelectric materials in the intrinsic excitation region remains a key challenge. The magnetic transition of permanent magnet nanoparticles from ferromagnetism to paramagnetism provides an effective approach to finding the solution to this challenge. Here, we have designed and prepared magnetic nanocomposite thermoelectric materials consisting of BaFe12O19 nanoparticles and Ba0.3In0.3Co4Sb12 matrix. It was found that the electrical transport behaviours of the nanocomposites are controlled by the magnetic transition of BaFe12O19 nanoparticles from ferromagnetism to paramagnetism. BaFe12O19 nanoparticles trap electrons below the Curie temperature (TC) and release the trapped electrons above the TC, playing an ‘electron repository’ role in maintaining high figure of merit ZT. BaFe12O19 nanoparticles produce two types of magnetoelectric effect—electron spiral motion and magnon-drag thermopower—as well as enhancing phonon scattering. Our work demonstrates that the performance deterioration of thermoelectric materials in the intrinsic excitation region can be suppressed through the magnetic transition of permanent magnet nanoparticles
