Memory in an aging molecular glass

The dielectric susceptibility of the molecular liquid sorbitol below its calorimetric glass transition displays memory strikingly similar to that of a variety of glassy materials. During a temporary stop in cooling, the susceptibility changes with time, and upon reheating the susceptibility retraces these changes. To investigate the out-of-equilibrium state of the liquid as it displays this memory, the heating stage of this cycle is interrupted and the subsequent aging characterized. At temperatures above that of the original cooling stop, the liquid enters a state on heating with an effective age that is proportional to the duration of the stop, while at lower temperatures no effective age can be assigned and subtler behavior emerges. These results, which reveal differences with memory displayed by spin glasses, are discussed in the context of the liquid's energy landscape.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. In this paper, we give some non-trivial generalizations of the Knopp core and statistical core theorems introduced by Knopp [Math. Z. 31 (1930) 97-127] and by Fridy and Orhan [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 208 (1997) 520-527], respectively

    Alternative Medicine for Hair Loss

    Get PDF
In recent years, people have begun to give further emphasis to the external beauty, especially for their hair. Except drugs with proven effectiveness, complementary and alternative treatment options that have not yet been clarified of their effectiveness and side effect profiles have been used for centuries. Many plants or their extracts are widely used to prevent hair loss and treat alopecia (e.g., androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, or traction alopecia) worldwide, especially in Far Eastern countries. The mechanisms of action of these plants are still unknown. Although there are little randomized-controlled studies investigating the effectiveness in the treatment of hair loss, reported results have demonstrated that complementary and alternative medicine will become much more popular in the near future

Enough is as good as a feast : a simple model of choice overload

The fundamental assumption of neoclassical economic theory is the rationality of economic agents. Nonetheless, in time, systematic deviations from this assumption has been observed. A number of such deviations pertains to the decision-making process and one of them is the rather seemingly contradictory burden originating from the abounding number of alternatives available. Suboptimal behavior caused by this burden that is called "choice overload" has been observed in field and laboratory experiments and subsequently introduced into some modern economic models. This dissertation provides a simple model for choice overload. By breaking the phenomenon into three parts, the novelty factor, the cost of evaluation of choices, and the anticipated regret, it examines the elements that constitute choice overload. Subsequently, this work provides an example of the role choice overload may play in the context of Prisoner's Dilemma.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Curved jet motion. I. Orbiting and precessing jets

Astrophysical jets are often observed as bent or curved structures. We also know that the different jet sources may be binary in nature, which may lead to a regular, periodic motion of the jet nozzle, an orbital motion or precession. Here, we present the results of 2D (M)HD simulations in order to investigate how a precessing or orbiting jet nozzle affects the propagation of a high-speed jet. We have performed a parameter study of systems with different precession angles, orbital periods or separations, and different magnetic field strengths. We find that these kinds of nozzles lead to curved jet propagation which is determined by the main parameters that define the jet nozzle. We find C-shaped jets from orbiting nozzles and S-shaped jets from precessing nozzles. Over long time and long distances, the initially curved jet motion bores a broad channel into the ambient gas that is filled with high-speed jet material which lateral motion is damped, however. A strong (longitudinal) magnetic field can damp the jet curvature that is enforced by either precession of orbital motion of the jet sources. We have investigated the force balance across the jet and ambient medium and found that the lateral magnetic pressure and gas pressure gradients are almost balanced, but that a lack of gas pressure on the concave side of the curvature is leading to the lateral motion. Magnetic tension does not play a significant role. Our results are obtained in code units, but we provide scaling relations such that our results may be applied to young stars, micro-quasars, symbiotic stars or AGN.Comment: 20 pp, 14 figs; accepted by Ap

WELFARE AND GOVERNANCE CRISES OF NEOLIBERAL GLOBALIZATION: THE NEW INSTITUTIONAL ECONOMICS PERSPECTIVE

    Get PDF
This paper focuses on why the debate over neoliberal globalization is so popular around the world at the beginning of the 21st century and investigates the new instituonal economics responses. Crises are not new to capitalism, but we all have been witnessing devastating economic, social, cultural, and political fluctuations in the global economic order. Classical welfare economics ignores distributional effects of theory and morality. Global poverty, inequality, unemployment, unfair trade, migration, environmental disasters etc. are paradoxes or evils of neoliberalism and not sustainable for future of humanity. In order to explain evolution of major causes of the conflicts related to globalization historically, we review a wide range of the literature and analyze the recent discussions of controversial topics on global welfare and governance implications of neoclassic economic thought. The study concludes that there is a growing consensus on the inedequacy of welfare economics in global society. Technological progress and corporate-led economic globalization in real World result in economic nationalism. Retreat from globalisation may be the beginning of a new phase of capitalism. The new instituonal economics says that institutions and social order matter on well-being and development. So we should rethink losers and winners from neoliberal globalization and reshape rules of global economic order in favor of global losers
