    Information values, sharing, and cultural memory: interactions with ICT use in an online immigrant community

    Information-centric online communities have become popular sources for users, including for information sharing among immigrants that provides both informational and social support. Such communities encourage greater information sharing when users share the same judgment on what information is of value, sharing that often leads to the creation or invocation of cultural memories. There has been little research on immigrants’ negotiation of information values, creation and invocation of cultural memory, and information sharing within and across the boundaries of online communities, with particular emphasis needed on their use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in information sharing. This poster presents qualitative, multi-method research in its early stages that will examine how the ICTs used by members of Expat Forum, an online immigrant community, interact with the information values and information sharing of community members and the cultural memory established by the community

    The role of digital libraries as boundary objects within and across communities

    Despite increased study of social contexts within information science, it is still unclear if and how digital libraries support and facilitate collaboration, communities, and other social contexts. This poster presents a study that will examine the role of the LibraryThing and Goodreads digital libraries, as social phenomena and boundary objects, in information behaviors and activities taking place within, between, and across multiple existing and emergent communities. The study will focus on the two key phenomena of communities and collaboration, under a theoretical framework drawing from Star’s boundary object theory, Strauss’s social worlds perspective, and Burnett and Jaeger’s theory of information worlds. Data will be collected from the two cases using a sequential, multi-phased mixed methods design employing content analysis, a survey, and interviews.     "Like a Real Friendship": Translation, Coherence, and Convergence of Information Values in LibraryThing and Goodreads

    This paper presents findings on the roles that two digital libraries and virtual book club communities, LibraryThing and Goodreads, play in the existing and emergent communities of their users. Informed by social informatics and sociotechnical theory and research, it improves our understanding of the phenomenon of information value and how shared information values are translated, cohered, and converged as users interact. LibraryThing and Goodreads play significant roles, but perfect coherence and convergence is not necessary in most cases; understanding differences and being willing to negotiate and translate around them allowed for continued use of the sites and for continued community existence and emergence. Translation was a significant factor in allowing common ground and social ties to be established, leading to greater information and knowledge sharing. Similar to maintaining “a real friendship,” these processes are often invisible work, but serve as significant factors in the sociotechnical infrastructure of LibraryThing and Goodreads.ye

    Volatile Liquid Detection by Terahertz Technologies

    The prospect of being able to move through security without the inconvenience of separating liquids from bags is an exciting one for passengers, and there are important operational benefits for airports as well. Here, two terahertz (THz) systems, 100 GHz sub-THz line scanner and attenuation total reflection-based THz time domain spectroscopy (TDS), have been used to demonstrate the capability of identifying different liquid samples. Liquid samples’ THz complex permittivities are measured and their differences have contributed to the variation of 100 GHz 2D images of volatile liquids with different volumes inside of cannister bottles. The acquired attenuation images at 100 GHz can easily be used to distinguish highly absorbed liquids (Water, Ethanol, Fuel Treatment Chemicals) and low loss liquids (Petrol, Diesel, Kerosene and Universal Bottle Cleaner). The results give a promising feasibility for mm-wave imager and THz spectroscopy to efficiently identify different volatile liquids

    Beyond Simple AGN Unification with Chandra-observed 3CRR Sources at 0.5 < z < 1

    Low-frequency radio selection finds radio-bright galaxies regardless of the amount of obscuration by gas and dust. We report \chandra\ observations of a complete 178~MHz-selected, and so orientation unbiased, sample of 44 0.5<z<10.5<z<1 3CRR sources. The sample is comprised of quasars and narrow-line radio galaxies (NLRGs) with similar radio luminosities, and the radio structure serves as both an age and an orientation indicator. Consistent with Unification, intrinsic obscuration (measured by \nh, X-ray hardness ratio, and X-ray luminosity) generally increases with inclination. However, the sample includes a population not seen in high-zz 3CRR sources: NLRGs viewed at intermediate inclination angles with \nh~<1022<10^{22}~cm2^{-2}. Multiwavelength analysis suggests these objects have lower L/LEddL/L_{\rm Edd} than typical NLRGs at similar orientation. Thus both orientation and L/LEddL/L_{\rm Edd} are important, and a "radiation-regulated Unification" provides a better explanation of the sample's observed properties. In comparison with the 3CRR sample at 1<z<21<z<2, our lower-redshift sample shows a higher fraction of Compton-thin NLRGs (45\% vs.\ 29\%) but similar Compton-thick fraction (20\%), implying a larger covering factor of Compton-thin material at intermediate viewing angles and so a more "puffed-up" torus atmosphere. We posit that this is due to a range of L/LEddL/L_{\rm Edd} extending to lower values in this sample. In contrast, at high redshifts the narrower range and high L/LEddL/L_{\rm Edd} values allowed orientation (and so simple Unification) to dominate the sample's observed properties

It is important for health care providers of gravida to be alert of the disease and its effects on pregnancy

    Mapping the encounter state of a transient protein complex by PRE NMR spectroscopy

    Many biomolecular interactions proceed via a short-lived encounter state, consisting of multiple, lowly-populated species invisible to most experimental techniques. Recent development of paramagnetic relaxation enhancement (PRE) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has allowed to directly visualize such transient intermediates in a number of protein-protein and protein-DNA complexes. Here we present an analysis of the recently published PRE NMR data for a protein complex of yeast cytochrome c (Cc) and cytochrome c peroxidase (CcP). First, we describe a simple, general method to map out the spatial and temporal distributions of binding geometries constituting the Cc-CcP encounter state. We show that the spatiotemporal mapping provides a reliable estimate of the experimental coverage and, at higher coverage levels, allows to delineate the conformational space sampled by the minor species. To further refine the encounter state, we performed PRE-based ensemble simulations. The generated solutions reproduce well the experimental data and lie within the allowed regions of the encounter maps, confirming the validity of the mapping approach. The refined encounter ensembles are distributed predominantly in a region encompassing the dominant form of the complex, providing experimental proof for the results of classical theoretical simulations

    Electrochemical deposition of zeolitic imidazolate framework electrode coatings for supercapacitor electrodes

    Zn and Co electrodes have been successfully coated with five different zeolitic imidazolate frameworks ZIFs (ZIF-4, ZIF-7, ZIF-8, ZIF-14 and ZIF-67) via the anodic dissolution method. Careful control of the reaction conditions allows for electrode coating growth; in contrast to previous reports of electrochemical ZIF growth, which have not succeeded in obtaining ZIF electrode coatings. Coating crystallinity is also shown to be heavily dependent upon reaction conditions, with amorphous rather than crystalline material generated at shorter reaction times and lower linker concentrations. Electrochemical applications for ZIF-coated electrodes are highlighted with the observation of an areal capacitance of 10.45 mF cm−2 at 0.01 V s−1 for additive-free ZIF-67 coated Co electrodes. This is superior to many reported metal organic framework (MOF)/graphene composites and to capacitance values previously reported for additive-free MOFs
