    Highlights of the TEXONO Research Program on Neutrino and Astroparticle Physics

    This article reviews the research program and efforts for the TEXONO Collaboration on neutrino and astro-particle physics. The ``flagship'' program is on reactor-based neutrino physics at the Kuo-Sheng (KS) Power Plant in Taiwan. A limit on the neutrino magnetic moment of \munuebar < 1.3 X 10^{-10} \mub} at 90% confidence level was derived from measurements with a high purity germanium detector.     Strain driven anisotropic magnetoresistance in antiferromagnetic La0.4_{0.4}Sr0.6_{0.6}MnO3_{3}

    We investigate the effects of strain on antiferromagntic (AFM) single crystal thin films of La1−x_{1-x}Srx_{x}MnO3_{3} (x = 0.6). Nominally unstrained samples have strong magnetoresistance with anisotropic magnetoresistances (AMR) of up to 8%. Compressive strain suppresses magnetoresistance but generates AMR values of up to 63%. Tensile strain presents the only case of a metal-insulator transition and demonstrates a previously unreported AMR behavior. In all three cases, we find evidence of magnetic ordering and no indication of a global ferromagnetic phase transition. These behaviors are attributed to epitaxy induced changes in orbital occupation driving different magnetic ordering types.     Analysis of chaotic mixing in plugs moving in meandering microchannels

    Droplets moving in meandering microchannels can serve as a passive and robust strategy to produce chaotic mixing of species in droplet-based microfluidics. In this paper, a simplified theoretical model is proposed for plug-shaped droplets moving in meandering microchannels at Stokes flow. With this model to provide the velocity field, particle tracking, which requires a large computation time, is performed directly and easily without interpolation. With this convenience, a broad survey of the parameter space is carried out to investigate chaotic mixing in plugs, including the channel curvature, the Peclet number, the viscosity ratio, and the plug length. The results show that in order to achieve rapid mixing in plugs in meandering microchannels, a large curvature, a small Peclet number, a moderate viscosity ratio, and a moderate plug length are preferred. © 2011 American Physical Society

    Research Program towards Observation of Neutrino-Nucleus Coherent Scattering

    The article describes the research program pursued by the TEXONO Collaboration towards an experiment to observe coherent scattering between neutrinos and the nucleus at the power reactor. The motivations of studying this process are surveyed. In particular, a threshold of 100-200 eV has been achieved with an ultra-low-energy germanium detector prototype.     Dissociation cross sections of ground-state and excited charmonia with light mesons in the quark model

    We present numerical results for the dissociation cross sections of ground-state, orbitally- and radially-excited charmonia in collisions with light mesons. Our results are derived using the nonrelativistic quark model, so all parameters are determined by fits to the experimental meson spectrum. Examples of dissociation into both exclusive and inclusive final states are considered. The dissociation cross sections of several C=(+) charmonia may be of considerable importance for the study of heavy ion collisions, since these states are expected to be produced more copiously than the J/psi. The relative importance of the productions of ground-state and orbitally-excited charmed mesons in a pion-charmonium collision is demonstrated through the s\sqrt {s}-dependent charmonium dissociation cross sections.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

    Prospects of cold dark matter searches with an ultra-low-energy germanium detector

    The report describes the research program on the development of ultra-low-energy germanium detectors, with emphasis on WIMP dark matter searches. A threshold of 100 eV is achieved with a 20 g detector array, providing a unique probe to the low-mas WIMP. Present data at a surface laboratory is expected to give rise to comparable sensitivities with the existing limits at the 5−10GeV\rm{5 - 10 GeV} WIMP-mass range. The projected parameter space to be probed with a full-scale, kilogram mass-range experiment is presented.     Robust Interference Exploitation for Multi-Cell Transmission

    In this paper, we investigate power-efficient constructive interference (CI) exploitation in multi-cell coordination systems. By only sharing channel state information (CSI) among the coordinated base stations (BS)s, we propose a CI-based coordinated beamforming (CBF) scheme to judiciously exploit multiuser interference as a beneficial element rather than strictly mitigating it, while simultaneously suppressing inter-cell interference as a destructive element. Then taking imperfect channel state information (CSI) into consideration, we minimize the total transmission power consumption with multiple users’ probabilistic signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) requirements, where the users’ SINR requirements are guaranteed in a statistical manner. Finally, under the presence of CSI error, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed CI-based CBF scheme consumes much lower transmission power compared to the classical CBF benchmarks, where both intra-cell multi-user and inter-cell interference need to be strictly cancelled as destructive elements. Last but not least, the incurred overhead and computational complexity of the proposed scheme are analytically analyzed, confirming its practicality as a new dimension on multi-cell coordination

    Patterns of antihypertensive prescribing, discontinuation and switching among a Hong Kong Chinese population from over one million prescriptions

    Hypertension is an alarming public health problem among Chinese. The present study evaluated the prescribing patterns, discontinuation and switching profiles of antihypertensive agents and their associated factors in one Hong Kong Chinese population. Data were retrieved from computerized records for patients prescribed anti-hypertensive agents in government primary care clinics of Hong Kong from January, 2004 to June, 2007. A total of 1,069,836 antihypertensive drug visits, representing 67,028 patients, were analyzed. The most commonly prescribed drugs were Calcium Channel Blockers (CCBs) (49%), b-Blockers (BBs) (46%) and Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors (ACEIs) (19%). Thiazide diuretic prescribing was low (13%) and on the decline (14% in 2004 to 12% in 2007). Prescribing of ACEIs was rising (16% in 2004 to 23% in 2007). Patients’ age, gender, and socio-economic status were independent predictors of class of anti-hypertensive prescribed but explained less than 3.5% of the variation observed. Drug discontinuation was highest for BBs (21%) and lowest for CCBs (12%). The high rates of discontinuation in BBs remained apparent after controlling for confounding variables. Switching was less common than discontinuation and was most likely with thiazide diuretics. To summarize, prescribing of CCBs and BBs were high and that of thiazide diuretics particularly low in this Chinese population when compared with international trends. CCBs may be a particularly favorable antihypertensive treatment in Chinese, given the high discontinuation rates of BBs and international guidelines advising against the use of BBs as first-line therapy.
