Quantum Canonical Transformations: Physical Equivalence of Quantum Theories

Two quantum theories are physically equivalent if they are related, not by a unitary transformation, but by an isometric transformation. The conditions under which a quantum canonical transformation is an isometric transformation are given.Comment: 11 pages, Imperial/TP/92-93/2

    Techniczno-leksykograficzna notatka o kompozycjach typu owocowo-warzywny

The note discusses words such as owocowo-warzywny (‘fruit and vegetable’), warzywno-owocowy (‘vegetable and fruit’), naukowo-badawczy (‘science-research’) etc. which are very frequent in source texts on which lexicographers base their general dictionaries of Polish. The author examines the theoretical status of these expressions in selected Polish language dictionaries (with special reference to Słownik wileński and Słownik warszawski). W notatce omawiane są wyrazy w rodzaju owocowo-warzywny, warzywno-owocowy, naukowo-badawczy, bardzo często spotykane w  tekstach źródłowych stanowiących podstawę opracowania słowników ogólnych języka polskiego. Autor rozważa status teoretyczny owych wyrażeń w wybranych słownikach języka polskiego, szczególnie w Słowniku wileńskim i Słowniku warszawskim.

Joint Spectra of Generators in Topological Algebras

Let be a complex topological algebra with unit 1 and a family of proper closed ideals in . For an arbitrary S⊂ we define a globally defined joint spectrum σ(S)={(λs)s∈S∈ℂS  |   ∃ I  ∈(s−λs)∈I ∀s∈S}. We prove that for S generating the spectrum σ(S) can be identified with the set of continuous multiplicative functionals f on such that ker f∈. The relation is given by the formula σ(S)={(f(s))s∈S  |    f∈}. If is a Q-algebra, the set σ(S) is rationally convex

The article contains a critical analysis of the material included in the well-known etymological dictionary of the Polish language by A. Bańkowski. It specifies the dates of appearance in the Polish language of more than 100 lexemes, and provides methodological comments on the process of word-dating.The article contains a critical analysis of the material included in the well-known etymological dictionary of the Polish language by A. Hypoglossal nerve palsy in the course of dissection of the internal carotid arteries – Case reports

    Get PDF
Internal carotid artery dissection (ICAD) has become an increasingly recognized cause of cerebrovascular accidents in young and middle-aged patients. We report 2 cases of hypoglossal nerve palsy in the course of dissection of the internal carotid arteries. The first patient was admitted to the Department of Neurology due to swallowing difficulty, speech articulation disorders and numbness of the right half of the tongue for 4 weeks. Extracranial vessel ultrasound (US) and transcranial colour Doppler (TCD) visualized thrombus causing occlusion of the right internal carotid artery (RICA). Angio-CT revealed a compression on right XII nerve and a dissection of the RICA. The second patient was referred to the Department of Neurology due to articulation disorders and swallowing difficulties. On admission, neurological examination revealed tongue deviation towards the right side with evidence of atrophy of the right half of the tongue, deviation of the uvula to the right side, absence of palatal and pharyngeal reflexes, rhinolalia and dysphagia. Vessel imaging was taken using angio-MR showing mural thrombus of the RICA. Conclusion The diagnosis of spontaneous non-traumatic dissection of the carotid arteries is a major challenge for clinicians. ICAD must be considered for young and middle-aged patients when severe headache is preceded by the co-existence of focal neurological symptoms. The probability of ICAD increases in the presence of predisposing diseases. The final diagnosis is based on imaging studies: color duplex ultrasound, CT angiography or MR angiography

Kinetic Limit for Wave Propagation in a Random Medium

We study crystal dynamics in the harmonic approximation. The atomic masses are weakly disordered, in the sense that their deviation from uniformity is of order epsilon^(1/2). The dispersion relation is assumed to be a Morse function and to suppress crossed recollisions. We then prove that in the limit epsilon to 0 the disorder averaged Wigner function on the kinetic scale, time and space of order epsilon^(-1), is governed by a linear Boltzmann equation.Comment: 71 pages, 3 figure

    Geometry of entangled states

    Get PDF
Geometric properties of the set of quantum entangled states are investigated. We propose an explicit method to compute the dimension of local orbits for any mixed state of the general K x M problem and characterize the set of effectively different states (which cannot be related by local transformations). Thus we generalize earlier results obtained for the simplest 2 x 2 system, which lead to a stratification of the 6D set of N=4 pure states. We define the concept of absolutely separable states, for which all globally equivalent states are separable.Comment: 16 latex pages, 4 figures in epsf, minor corrections, references updated, to appear in Phys.
