Vibration Analysis of a Split Path Gearbox
Split path gearboxes can be attractive alternatives to the common planetary designs for rotorcraft, but because they have seen little use, they are relatively high risk designs. To help reduce the risk of fielding a rotorcraft with a split path gearbox, the vibration and dynamic characteristics of such a gearbox were studied. A mathematical model was developed by using the Lagrangian method, and it was applied to study the effect of three design variables on the natural frequencies and vibration energy of the gearbox. The first design variable, shaft angle, had little influence on the natural frequencies. The second variable, mesh phasing, had a strong effect on the levels of vibration energy, with phase angles of 0 deg and 180 deg producing low vibration levels. The third design variable, the stiffness of the shafts connecting the spur gears to the helical pinions, strongly influenced the natural frequencies of some of the vibration modes, including two of the dominant modes. We found that, to achieve the lowest level of vibration energy, the natural frequencies of these two dominant modes should be less than those of the main excitation sources
Recent amplification of an alpha satellite DNA in humans.
A repeat sequence 682 base pairs (bp) long produced by cleavage of human DNA with Xba I restriction enzyme is composed of four tandemly arranged subunits with lengths of 171, 170, 171, and 170 bp each. The sequence organization of the 682 bp Xba I repeat bears a striking resemblance to other complex satellite DNAs of primates, including the Eco RI human alpha satellite family which also occurs as a 170 bp repeat. The Eco RI tetramer and the 682 bp Xba I repeat show a sequence divergence of 21%. The 682 bp Xba I repeat sequence is restricted to humans and is only distantly related to the previously reported 340 bp Xba human repeated DNA sequence. These finding are consistent with the concept of occasional amplifications of members or groups of members of alpha satellite DNA during human evolution. Amplifications apparently occurred after humans, apes and gibbons diverged from Old World monkeys (Eco RI satellite), after humans and apes diverged from gibbons (340 bp Xba I satellite) and after humans diverged from the great apes (682 bp Xba I satellite)
Limits on the gravity wave contribution to microwave anisotropies
We present limits on the fraction of large angle microwave anisotropies which
could come from tensor perturbations. We use the COBE results as well as
smaller scale CMB observations, measurements of galaxy correlations, abundances
of galaxy clusters, and Lyman alpha absorption cloud statistics. Our aim is to
provide conservative limits on the tensor-to-scalar ratio for standard
inflationary models. For power-law inflation, for example, we find T/S<0.52 at
95% confidence, with a similar constraint for phi^p potentials. However, for
models with tensor amplitude unrelated to the scalar spectral index it is still

The Sachs-Wolfe Effect: Gauge Independence and a General Expression
In this paper we address two points concerning the Sachs-Wolfe effect: (i)
the gauge independence of the observable temperature anisotropy, and (ii) a
gauge-invariant expression of the effect considering the most general situation
of hydrodynamic perturbations. The first result follows because the gauge
transformation of the temperature fluctuation at the observation event only
contributes to the isotropic temperature change which, in practice, is absorbed
into the definition of the background temperature. Thus, we proceed without
fixing the gauge condition, and express the Sachs-Wolfe effect using the

Magnetic polarons in weakly doped high-Tc superconductors
We consider a spin Hamiltonian describing - exchange interactions
between localized spins of a finite antiferromagnet as well as -
interactions between a conducting hole () and localized spins. The spin
Hamiltonian is solved numerically with use of Lanczos method of
diagonalization. We conclude that - exchange interaction leads to
localization of magnetic polarons. Quantum fluctuations of the antiferromagnet
strengthen this effect and make the formation of polarons localized in one site
possible even for weak - coupling. Total energy calculations, including
the kinetic energy, do not change essentially the phase diagram of magnetic
polarons formation. For parameters reasonable for high- superconductors
either a polaron localized on one lattice cell or a small ferron can form. For
reasonable values of the dielectric function and - coupling, the
contributions of magnetic and phonon terms in the formation of a polaron in

Evidence against or for topological defects in the BOOMERanG data ?
The recently released BOOMERanG data was taken as ``contradicting topological
defect predictions''. We show that such a statement is partly misleading.
Indeed, the presence of a series of acoustic peaks is perfectly compatible with
a non-negligible topological defects contribution. In such a mixed perturbation
model (inflation and topological defects) for the source of primordial
fluctuations, the natural prediction is a slightly lower amplitude for the
Doppler peaks, a feature shared by many other purely inflationary models. Thus,
for the moment, it seems difficult to rule out these models with the current

Isocurvature and Adiabatic Fluctuations of Axion in Chaotic Inflation Models and Large Scale Structure
In the chaotic inflation models, quantum fluctuations for axion fields lead
to the overproduction of domain walls and too large isocurvature fluctuations
which is inconsistent with the observations of cosmic microwave background
anisotropies. These problems are solved by assuming a very flat potential for
the Peccei-Quinn scalar. As the simplest possibility, we consider a model where
the Peccei-Quinn scalar is an inflaton itself and show that the isocurvature
fluctuations can be comparable with the adiabatic ones. We investigate
cosmological implications in the case that both adiabatic and isocurvature
fluctuations exist and find that the amplitude of the matter spectrum becomes
smaller than that for the pure adiabatic case. This leads to relatively high

Clinical mastitis in cows treated with sometribove (recombinant bovine somatotropin) and its relationship to milk yield.
Effect of sometribove (methionyl bovine somatotropin) on mastitis in 15 full lactation trials (914 cows) in Europe and the US and 70 short-term studies (2697 cows) in eight countries was investigated. In full lactation studies, sometribove (500 mg/2 wk) was given for 252 d, commencing 60 d postpartum. Although herds varied considerably, incidence of clinical mastitis within a herd was similar for cows receiving control and sometribove treatments. Relative risk analyses indicated no treatment effect, and percentage of mastitis during treatment was similar for control and sometribove groups. A positive linear relationship existed between peak milk yield and mastitis incidence (percentage of cows contracting mastitis or cases per 100 cow days); sometribove treatment did not alter this relationship. Increases in mastitis related to milk yield increase from sometribove or related to genetic selection were similar. When expressed per unit of milk, mastitis incidence declined slightly as milk yield increased; this relationship was not altered by sometribove. No effect on clinical mastitis was observed in 70 commercial herds utilizing sometribove for 84 d. However, effects were significant for stage of lactation and milk yield. Overall, studies represented a wide range of research and commercial situations demonstrating that sometribove had no effect on incidence of clinical mastitis during the lactation of treatment. Furthermore, sometribove did not alter typical relationships between milk yield or herd factors and incidence of clinical mastitis
