    Developing Student, Family, and School Constructs From NLTS2 Data

    The purpose of this study was to use data from the National Longitudinal Transition Study–2 (NLTS2) to (a) conceptually identify and empirically establish student, family, and school constructs; (b) explore the degree to which the constructs can be measured equivalently across disability groups; and (c) examine latent differences (means, variances, and correlations) in the constructs across disability groups. Conceptual analysis of NLTS2 individual survey items yielded 21 student, family, and school constructs, and 16 were empirically supported. Partial strong metric invariance was established across disability groups, and in the latent space, a complex pattern of mean and variance differences across disability groups was found. Disability group moderated the correlational relationships between multiple predictor constructs, suggesting the key role of disability-related characteristics in understanding the experiences of youth with disabilities. Implications for future research and practice are discussed

    Introduced here is a novel technique which adds the dimension of time to the well known back propagation neural network algorithm. Cited here are several reasons why the inclusion of automated spatial and temporal associations are crucial to effective systems modeling. An overview of other works which also model spatiotemporal dynamics is furnished. A detailed description is given of the processes necessary to implement the space-time network algorithm. Several demonstrations that illustrate the capabilities and performance of this new architecture are given

    Neural network based speech synthesizer: A preliminary report

    A neural net based speech synthesis project is discussed. The novelty is that the reproduced speech was extracted from actual voice recordings. In essence, the neural network learns the timing, pitch fluctuations, connectivity between individual sounds, and speaking habits unique to that individual person. The parallel distributed processing network used for this project is the generalized backward propagation network which has been modified to also learn sequences of actions or states given in a particular plan

    Algebraic methods for parameterized codes and invariants of vanishing ideals over finite fields

    Let K be a finite field with q elements and let X be a subset of a projective space P^{s-1}, over the field K, which is parameterized by Laurent monomials. Let I(X) be the vanishing ideal of X. Some of the main contributions of this paper are in determining the structure of I(X) and some of their invariants. It is shown that I(X) is a lattice ideal. We introduce the notion of a parameterized code arising from X and present algebraic methods to compute and study its dimension, length and minimum distance. For a parameterized code arising from a connected graph we are able to compute its length and to make our results more precise.     More Pushed than Pulled: Self-employment in rural Mexico ten years after NAFTA

    Who are the self-employed in rural Mexico? This paper tries to answer that question with special emphasis on the role of human capital in self-employment decisions. The model presented suggests that the need for leisure/flexibility may have a driving effect once the household framework is considered. Imperfect markets may hinder possible gains of self-employment with particular groups being more vulnerable (e.g. women). Some estimated parameters in this study for propensities to become self-employed and returns to education vary between 1994 and 2004, the first decade of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Pull and push factors emerge in the decision to enter into self-employment in rural area. Being self-employed still may be the best or sole option for a considerable percentage of the population.     Exploring Student, Family, and School Predictors of Self-Determination Using NLTS2 Data

    This study conducted secondary analysis of data from the National Longitudinal Transition Study-2 (NLTS2) to examine the degree to which student, family, and school constructs predicted self-determination outcomes. Multi-group structural equation modeling was used to examine predictive relationships between 5 student, 4 family, and 7 school constructs developed from NLTS2 data and self-determination outcomes (autonomy, psychological empowerment, and self-realization) across disability groups. The pattern of predictive relationship between the constructs and self-determination outcomes across disability groups was complex. Only one construct—self-concept—showed a positive predictive relationship with all three self-determination constructs across most disability groups.     On the sensitivity of extrasolar mass-loss rate ranges: HD 209458b a case study

    We present a 3D hydrodynamic study of the effects that different stellar wind conditions and planetary wind structures have on the calculated Ly-α\alpha absorptions produced during the transit of HD 209458b. Considering a range of stellar wind speeds ∌\sim[350-800] km s−1^{-1}, coronal temperature ∌\sim[3-7] ×106\times10^{6} K and two values of the polytropic index Γ\Gamma ∌\sim[1.01-1.13], while keeping fixed the stellar mass loss rate, we found a that a M˙p\dot M_p range between ∌\sim[3-5] ×1010\times 10^{10}g s−1^{-1} give account for the observational absorption in Ly-α\alpha measured for the planetary system. Also, several models with anisotropic evaporation profiles for the planetary escaping atmosphere were carried out, showing that both, the escape through polar regions and through the night side yields larger absorptions than an isotropic planetary wind
