Amending Its Anti-Paparazzi Statute: California\u27s Latest Baby Step in Its Attempt to Curb the Aggressive Paparazzi

    Get PDF
The financial rewards of celebrity photos have driven the paparazzi to increasingly dangerous tactics, often endangering celebrities and others in their pursuit of a valuable photo. In response to this danger, California amended its anti-paparazzi statute in 2005. The amended statute provides stiff penalties, including punitive and treble damages, and allows a celebrity to recover these damages for assault. However, assault requires the intent to cause apprehension of imminent contact, and much of the outrageous conduct of the paparazzi does not evidence this sort of intent. If California is serious about curbing improper behavior by the paparazzi, it should penalize the behavior that is the source of the problem: negligently causing apprehension of contact

Potential of Ozone and Hydroxyl Radicals to Degrade Emerging Organic Contaminants

Advanced water treatment processes are necessary for the treatment of emerging organic contaminants. Traditional treatment processes do not filter or treat these contaminants causing humans and animals to come into contact and ingest them, both causing illness. Advanced oxidation processes are a good alternative method, but are cost and time intensive. Previous research on ozone and hydroxyl radicals leads to the conclusion that they might be a vial option for advanced water treatment processes. To test the effects of ozone and hydroxyl radicals on the destruction of algae, ozonated phosphate buffer was mixed with Anabaena and modified BG11 culture media and placed in a culturing apparatus to regrow the destructed Anabaena. The biomass density was measured via the optical density for five days and compared to controls. Exposure to ozone killed most of the algae in each batch, as expected. The higher the concentration of ozone, the higher amount of algal destruction. The Ozone Plus generator was more powerful at initial algal destruction than the Standard ozone generator, as indicated by the comparison between the results at 2 ppm ozone concentration. ! To test the effects of ozone and hydroxyl radicals on the treatment of carbamazepine (CMZ) and phenytoin (PHT) in controlled water systems, ozonated phosphate buffer was mixed with CMZ stock solution to make a 0.25 uM CMZ solution or PHT stock solution to form a 0.25 PHT solution. The dissolved organic carbon was measured through a total organic carbon (TOC) analyzer to determine degradation of organic compounds after exposure to ozone. With the same goal in mind, other experiments were performed using ozonated carbon nanotubes to treat CMZ and PHT in a series of increasingly complex water systems. To test the effects of ozonated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the treatment of CMZ and PHT, mixtures of 5.0 mM CMZ or PHT and tert-butonal were treated with ozonated phosphate buffer or treated effluent wastewater and 10 ppm or 20 ppm carbon nanotube solid loading. A high-performance liquid chromatography analyzer was used to measure the treated CMZ and PHT in the mixtures and compared to controls. The TOC test was used to determine the pharmaceutical destruction to ozone dose relationship was expected to be linear, but these results were inconclusive due to the maximum reduction of less than 10% for any level of ozone. In the simple media tests, CMZ was seemed to be completely when exposed to ozone, but a suspected breakdown product was measured. PHT had the most degradation with a CNT loading of 10 ppm and no ozone. This test suggests sorption had a greater effect on the pharmaceuticals than ozone or ·OH did. In more complex systems involving a mixture of the two pharmaceuticals in both a phosphate buffer, PHT with a CNT loading of 10 ppm had a degradation of 14% and 4% for a CNT loading of 20 ppm. The low degradation rate is most likely due to ozone reacting with other organic matter in the reactor and not the PHT. This was the same in the more complex systems involving a mixture of the two pharmaceuticals in both a phosphate buffer and a wastewater effluent system PHT with a CNT loading of 10 ppm had a degradation of 12% and 6% for a CNT loading of 20 ppm. In all three Chapters, the ozone and hydroxyl radicals showed moderate reduction in emerging organic contaminants. These results suggest that ozone and hydroxyl radicals generated from ozonated CNTs have potential to be an effective alternative to current AOPs, and that further study to refine the process is merited

GRIT and Its Relationship with College Academic Success

Low college completion rates are an unfortunate reality in the United States. Some researchers have shown that a higher level of grit assisted college students in earning a higher grade point average (GPA) and completing a college credential. My study focused on grit and its relationship to college GPA, course completion rate, and the number of activities and programs participated in during one semester, along with the interaction effects of grit with a growth mindset on GPA and course completion rate through five research questions. A survey was administered to community college students participating in a TRIO Student Support Services Program (SSS), qualifying for the program as low-income, first-generation, and/or students with disabilities. Analysis of the data obtained from the survey helped to answer the research questions using linear regression, standard multiple regression, and correlation. There was little research focusing on the relationship between grit, college GPA, and course completion rates for underserved students in TRIO SSS programs, especially at community colleges, along with few research studies that look at an interaction effect between grit and growth mindset regarding college achievement. This study was unable to provide statistically significant results to show relationships between grit, college GPA, course completion rate, or the number of TRIO SSS services and activities participated in, nor an interaction effect between grit and college completion rate on GPA & completion rate. Limitations and future research recommendations are discussed

A review of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander content within an accredited paramedicine degree curriculum was undertaken as part of major course review and ongoing evaluation of the program. The aim of which was to ensure the course content was appropriate and relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. All content and teaching activities were audited where specific content was explored and noted. Findings were presented to a review team where good practice was highlighted and areas for development were addressed. This has encouraged staff to seek opportunities to embed content in both clinical and non-clinical skills, knowledge teaching and experiences. In addition to encouraging further review of other diverse communities

A Systematic, Reliable Approach to Play Assessment in Preschoolers

    Get PDF
Play assessment is gaining attention as a measure of the developing skills of young children. The procedures and methods of coding child behaviours vary considerably across researchers and practitioners. Because of this, definitive statements about the use of play assessment cannot be made without further research. The present study is an attempt to report a set of standardized procedures for play assessment along with an empirically based coding scheme (PIECES). The reliability of this system of play assessment is also investigated. High inter-observer reliability was found along with moderate test–retest correlations for both the typically developing (r = 0.48) and exceptional (r = 0.58) children. Thus, this version of play assessment holds promise as an observation system for intervention and progress monitoring in early childhood. The authors stress that more research is needed in this area before play assessment can either be used in early childhood or discounted as an inappropriate tool

Nongraded versus Graded Elementary Schools: An Analysis of Achievement and Social Skills

In the last decade nongraded schools have regained popularity. Researchers and practitioners question the impact of the present applications of the nongraded structure on students. Two separate studies were conducted that compared the effects of nongraded and graded school grouping structures. The first study analyzed academic outcomes in reading, math, written language, and spelling. The second study evaluated the relationship between school type and social skills. Results indicated that students in the primary level (grades 1, 2, and 3) who attended the nongraded school performed better than their counterparts in the graded school on the reading and math assessment, but there were no differences in written language or spelling. At the intermediate level (grades 4, 5, and 6), students at the nongraded school performed better in written language and spelling, but the scores did not differ in reading or math. Students in the nongraded schools reported a higher level of social skills than students at the graded schools. The results and implications for school practice are discussed.

Play Behaviors of Young Children with and without Expressive Language Delay: An Exploratory Study

The association between language and play development during the early years of children’s lives is important as tremendous growth in development occurs in both at this time. Literature has suggested that if children have less developed language abilities, they may also have less developed play skills. The aim of the current exploratory study was to observe and categorize children’s play behavior using a comprehensive play assessment tool. This tool, the Play in Early Childhood Evaluation System (PIECES) coding scheme developed by Kelly-Vance and Ryalls (2005, 2014), provides information on differences in percentage of time in exploratory, simple pretend, and complex pretend play, highest levels of play behavior observed, and dimensions of social play. For the present exploratory study, six young children, three with and three without language delay, were matched in dyads. The six children ranging in age from 24-31 months. Using videotaped 40-minute play observations of each child during free play with a parent, researchers coded the play behaviors of each child using the PIECES coding scheme and interpreted findings accordingly. In two of the three participant dyads, participants with language delay spent more time in exploratory play and less time in pretend play compared to their counterparts without language delay. However, two out of the three participants had the same highest level of play as their matched peer. Participants with language delay demonstrated a lower percentage of play initiation than participants with no language delay. These results, although limited in generalization to only the participants of the study, suggest support of the positive association between play and language of young children and warrant further investigation. Additionally, this study offers a description of a play assessment approach that could be utilized with a larger participant cohort to extend this line of research as researchers continue to determine the appropriate role of play in assessment and intervention for young children with language delay
