Universal singularity at the closure of a gap in a random matrix theory
We consider a Hamiltonian , in which is a given
non-random Hermitian matrix,and is an Hermitian random matrix
with a Gaussian probability distribution.We had shown before that Dyson's
universality of the short-range correlations between energy levels holds at
generic points of the spectrum independently of . We consider here the
case in which the spectrum of is such that there is a gap in the
average density of eigenvalues of which is thus split into two pieces. When
the spectrum of is tuned so that the gap closes, a new class of
universality appears for the energy correlations in the vicinity of this

Expression of PEG11 and PEG11AS transcripts in normal and callipyge sheep
BACKGROUND: The callipyge mutation is located within an imprinted gene cluster on ovine chromosome 18. The callipyge trait exhibits polar overdominant inheritance due to the fact that only heterozygotes inheriting a mutant paternal allele (paternal heterozygotes) have a phenotype of muscle hypertrophy, reduced fat and a more compact skeleton. The mutation is a single A to G transition in an intergenic region that results in the increased expression of several genes within the imprinted cluster without changing their parent-of-origin allele-specific expression. RESULTS: There was a significant effect of genotype (p < 0.0001) on the transcript abundance of DLK1, PEG11, and MEG8 in the muscles of lambs with the callipyge allele. DLK1 and PEG11 transcript levels were elevated in the hypertrophied muscles of paternal heterozygous animals relative to animals of the other three genotypes. The PEG11 locus produces a single 6.5 kb transcript and two smaller antisense strand transcripts, referred to as PEG11AS, in skeletal muscle. PEG11AS transcripts were detectable over a 5.5 kb region beginning 1.2 kb upstream of the PEG11 start codon and spanning the entire open reading frame. Analysis of PEG11 expression by quantitative PCR shows a 200-fold induction in the hypertrophied muscles of paternal heterozygous animals and a 13-fold induction in homozygous callipyge animals. PEG11 transcripts were 14-fold more abundant than PEG11AS transcripts in the gluteus medius of paternal heterozygous animals. PEG11AS transcripts were expressed at higher levels than PEG11 transcripts in the gluteus medius of animals of the other three genotypes. CONCLUSIONS: The effect of the callipyge mutation has been to alter the expression of DLK1, GTL2, PEG11 and MEG8 in the hypertrophied skeletal muscles. Transcript abundance of DLK1 and PEG11 was highest in paternal heterozygous animals and exhibited polar overdominant gene expression patterns; therefore, both genes are candidates for causing skeletal muscle hypertrophy. There was unique relationship of PEG11 and PEG11AS transcript abundance in the paternal heterozygous animals that suggests a RNA interference mechanism may have a role in PEG11 gene regulation and polar overdominance in callipyge sheep

Evaluating the Diversity of Emergency Medicine Foundation (EMF) Grant Recipients in the Last Decade
On behalf of the ACEP Research CommitteeIntroduction: To study diversity of researchers and barriers to success among Emergency Medicine Foundation (EMF) grant recipients in the last 10 years.Methods: EMF grant awardees were approached to complete a brief survey, which included demographics, queries related to contributions to the literature, success in obtaining grants, and any perceived barriers they encountered.Results: Of the 342 researchers contacted by email, a total of 147 completed the survey for a response rate of 43%. The respondents were predominately mid to late career white-male-heterosexual-Christian with an average age of 44 years (range 25-69 years of age). With regards to training and education, the majority of respondents (50%) were either Associate or Professor clinical rank (8% instructor/resident/fellow and 31% Assistant). Sixty-two percent of the respondents reported perceived barriers to career advancement since completion of residency. The largest perceived barrier to success was medical specialty (26%), followed by gender (21%) and age (16%).Conclusion: Our survey of EMF grant recipients in the last 10 years shows a considerable lack of diversity. The most commonly perceived barriers to career advancement by this cohort were medical specialty, gender, and age. An opportunity exists for further definition of barriers and development of mechanisms to overcome them, with a goal of increased success for those that are underrepresented.
The weight-inclusive vs. weight-normative approach to health: Evaluating the evidence for prioritizing well-being over weight
Using an ethical lens, this review evaluates two methods of working within patient care and public health: the weight-normative approach (emphasis on weight and weight loss when defining health and well-being) and the weight-inclusive approach (emphasis on viewing health and well-being as multifaceted while directing efforts toward improving health access and reducing weight stigma). Data reveal that the weight-normative approach is not effective for most people because of high rates of weight regain and cycling from weight loss interventions, which are linked to adverse health and well-being. Its predominant focus on weight may also foster stigma in health care and society, and data show that weight stigma is also linked to adverse health and well-being. In contrast, data support a weight-inclusive approach, which is included in models such as Health at Every Size for improving physical (e.g., blood pressure), behavioral (e.g., binge eating), and psychological (e.g., depression) indices, as well as acceptability of public health messages. Therefore, the weight-inclusive approach upholds nonmaleficience and beneficience, whereas the weight-normative approach does not. We offer a theoretical framework that organizes the research included in this review and discuss how it can guide research efforts and help health professionals intervene with their patients and community
{\bf -Function Evaluation of Gap Probabilities in Orthogonal and Symplectic Matrix Ensembles}
It has recently been emphasized that all known exact evaluations of gap
probabilities for classical unitary matrix ensembles are in fact
-functions for certain Painlev\'e systems. We show that all exact
evaluations of gap probabilities for classical orthogonal matrix ensembles,
either known or derivable from the existing literature, are likewise
-functions for certain Painlev\'e systems. In the case of symplectic
matrix ensembles all exact evaluations, either known or derivable from the
existing literature, are identified as the mean of two -functions, both
of which correspond to Hamiltonians satisfying the same differential equation,
differing only in the boundary condition. Furthermore the product of these two
-functions gives the gap probability in the corresponding unitary
symmetry case, while one of those -functions is the gap probability in
the corresponding orthogonal symmetry case.Comment: AMS-Late
Multiple regions of quantum criticality in YbAgGe
Dilation and thermopower measurements on YbAgGe, a heavy-fermion
antiferromagnet, clarify and refine the magnetic field-temperature (H-T) phase
diagram and reveal a field-induced phase with T-linear resistivity. On the
low-H side of this phase we find evidence for a first-order transition and
suggest that YbAgGe at 4.5 T may be close to a quantum critical end point. On
the high-H side our results are consistent with a second-order transition
suppressed to a quantum critical point near 7.2 T. We discuss these results in
light of global phase diagrams proposed for Kondo lattice systems
Control of Integrable Hamiltonian Systems and Degenerate Bifurcations
We discuss control of low-dimensional systems which, when uncontrolled, are
integrable in the Hamiltonian sense. The controller targets an exact solution
of the system in a region where the uncontrolled dynamics has invariant tori.
Both dissipative and conservative controllers are considered. We show that the
shear flow structure of the undriven system causes a Takens-Bogdanov
birfurcation to occur when control is applied. This implies extreme noise
sensitivity. We then consider an example of these results using the driven
