    Quasicontinuum γ\gamma-decay of 91,92^{91,92}Zr: benchmarking indirect (n,γn,\gamma) cross section measurements for the ss-process

    Nuclear level densities (NLDs) and γ\gamma-ray strength functions (γ\gammaSFs) have been extracted from particle-γ\gamma coincidences of the 92^{92}Zr(p,pγp,p' \gamma)92^{92}Zr and 92^{92}Zr(p,dγp,d \gamma)91^{91}Zr reactions using the Oslo method. The new 91,92^{91,92}Zr γ\gammaSF data, combined with photonuclear cross sections, cover the whole energy range from Eγ1.5E_{\gamma} \approx 1.5~MeV up to the giant dipole resonance at Eγ17E_{\gamma} \approx 17~MeV. The wide-range γ\gammaSF data display structures at Eγ9.5E_{\gamma} \approx 9.5~MeV, compatible with a superposition of the spin-flip M1M1 resonance and a pygmy E1E1 resonance. Furthermore, the γ\gammaSF shows a minimum at Eγ23E_{\gamma} \approx 2-3~MeV and an increase at lower γ\gamma-ray energies. The experimentally constrained NLDs and γ\gammaSFs are shown to reproduce known (n,γn, \gamma) and Maxwellian-averaged cross sections for 91,92^{91,92}Zr using the {\sf TALYS} reaction code, thus serving as a benchmark for this indirect method of estimating (n,γn, \gamma) cross sections for Zr isotopes.Comment: 10 pages and 9 figure

    Phonon-induced quadrupolar ordering of the magnetic superconductor TmNi2_2B2_2C

    We present synchrotron x-ray diffraction studies revealing that the lattice of thulium borocarbide is distorted below T_Q = 13.5 K at zero field. T_Q increases and the amplitude of the displacements is drastically enhanced, by a factor of 10 at 60 kOe, when a magnetic field is applied along [100]. The distortion occurs at the same wave vector as the antiferromagnetic ordering induced by the a-axis field. A model is presented that accounts for the properties of the quadrupolar phase and explains the peculiar behavior of the antiferromagnetic ordering previously observed in this compound.Comment: submitted to PR

    Results of NOPHO ALL2008 treatment for patients aged 1-45 years with acute lymphoblastic leukemia

    Adults with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) do worse than children. From 7/2008 to 12/2014, Nordic and Baltic centers treated 1509 consecutive patients aged 1-45 years with Philadelphia chromosome-negative ALL according to the NOPHO ALL2008 without cranial irradiation. Overall, 1022 patients were of age 1-9 years (A), 266 were 10-17 years (B) and 221 were 18-45 years (C). Sixteen patients (three adults) died during induction. All others achieved remission after induction or 1-3 intensive blocks. Subsequently, 45 patients (12 adults) died, 122 patients relapsed (32 adults) with a median time to relapse of 1.6 years and 13 (no adult) developed a second malignancy.     Adiabaticity Conditions for Volatility Smile in Black-Scholes Pricing Model

    Our derivation of the distribution function for future returns is based on the risk neutral approach which gives a functional dependence for the European call (put) option price, C(K), given the strike price, K, and the distribution function of the returns. We derive this distribution function using for C(K) a Black-Scholes (BS) expression with volatility in the form of a volatility smile. We show that this approach based on a volatility smile leads to relative minima for the distribution function ("bad" probabilities) never observed in real data and, in the worst cases, negative probabilities. We show that these undesirable effects can be eliminated by requiring "adiabatic" conditions on the volatility smile

    The Space Density and Colors of Massive Galaxies at 2<z<3: the Predominance of Distant Red Galaxies

    Using the deep multi-wavelength MUSYC, GOODS, and FIRES surveys we construct a stellar mass-limited sample of galaxies at 2<z<3. The sample comprises 294 galaxies with M>10^11 Solar masses distributed over four independent fields with a total area of almost 400 sq arcmin. The mean number density of massive galaxies in this redshift range is (2.2+-0.6) x 10^-4 Mpc^-3. We present median values and 25th and 75th percentiles for the distributions of observed R mags, observed J-K colors, and rest-frame UV continuum slopes, M/L(V) ratios, and U-V colors. The galaxies show a large range in all these properties. The ``median galaxy'' is faint in the observer's optical (R=25.9), red in the observed near-IR (J-K=2.48), has a rest-frame UV spectrum which is relatively flat (beta=-0.4), and rest-frame optical colors resembling those of nearby spiral galaxies (U-V=0.62). We determine which galaxies would be selected as Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) or Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs, having J-K>2.3) in this mass-limited sample. By number DRGs make up 69% of the sample and LBGs 20%, with a small amount of overlap. By mass DRGs make up 77% and LBGs 17%. Neither technique provides a representative sample of massive galaxies at 2<z<3 as they only sample the extremes of the population. As we show here, multi-wavelength surveys with high quality photometry are essential for an unbiased census of massive galaxies in the early Universe. The main uncertainty in this analysis is our reliance on photometric redshifts; confirmation of the results presented here requires extensive near-infrared spectroscopy of optically-faint samples.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

    SvSXP: a Strongylus vulgaris antigen with potential for prepatent diagnosis

    BACKGROUND: Strongyle parasites are ubiquitous in grazing horses. Strongylus vulgaris, the most pathogenic of the large strongyles, is known for its extensive migration in the mesenteric arterial system. The lifecycle of S. vulgaris is characterised by a long prepatent period where the migrating larvae are virtually undetectable as there currently is no test available for diagnosing prepatent S. vulgaris infection. Presence of S. vulgaris larvae in the arterial system causes endarteritis and thrombosis with a risk of non-strangulating intestinal infarctions. Emergence of anthelmintic resistance among cyathostomins has led to recommendations of reduced treatment intensity by targeting horses that exceed a predetermined strongyle faecal egg count threshold. One study suggests an apparent increase in prevalence of S. vulgaris on farms where reduced anthelmintic treatment intensity has been implemented. These issues highlight the need for an accurate and reliable assay for diagnosing prepatent S. vulgaris infection. METHODS: Immunoscreening of a larval S. vulgaris cDNA library using hyperimmune serum raised against S. vulgaris excretory/secretory antigens was performed to identify potential diagnostic antigens. Immunoreactive clones were sequenced, one potential antigen was characterised, expressed as a recombinant protein, initially evaluated by western blot (WB) analysis, the diagnostic potential of the IgG subclasses was evaluated by ELISA, and the diagnostic accuracy evaluated using serum from 102 horses with known S. vulgaris infection status. RESULTS: The clone expressing the potential antigen encoded a S. vulgaris SXP/RAL2 homologue. The recombinant protein, rSvSXP, was shown to be a potential diagnostic antigen by WB analysis, and a target of serum IgGa, IgG(T) and total IgG in naturally infected horses, with IgG(T) antibodies being the most reliable indicator of S. vulgaris infection in horses. Evaluation of diagnostic accuracy of the ELISA resulted in a sensitivity of 73.3%, a specificity of 81.0%, a diagnostic odds ratio of 11.69; a positive likelihood ratio (LR) of 3.85 and a negative LR was 0.33. The area under the ROC curve was 0.820. CONCLUSION: IgG(T) antibodies to recombinant SvSXP show potential for use as an antigen for prepatent diagnosis of migrating stages of S. vulgaris with moderate to good diagnostic accuracy

    Impact of blade structural and aerodynamic uncertainties on wind turbine loads

    Offshore wind power has been in the spotlight among renewable energy sources. The current trends of increased power ratings and longer blades come together with the aim to reduce energy costs by design optimisation. The standard approach to deal with uncertainties in wind-turbine design has been by the use of characteristic values and safety factors. This paper focusses on modelling the effect of structural and aerodynamic uncertainties in blades. First, the uncertainties in laminate properties are characterised and propagated in a blade structural model by means of a Monte Carlo simulation. Wind tunnel measurement data are then used to define the variability in lift and drag coefficients for both clean and rough aerofoil behaviour, which is then used to extrapolate rough behaviours throughout the blade. A stochastic spatial interpolation parameter is used to define the evolution of the degradation level. The combined effect and the variance contribution of these two uncertainty sources in turbine loads is finally defined by aeroelastic turbine simulation. This research aims to provide a framework to deal with uncertainties in wind-turbine blade design and understand their effects in turbine behaviour

    Extinction Curves of Lensing Galaxies out to z=1

    We present a survey of the extinction properties of ten lensing galaxies, in the redshift range z = 0.04 - 1.01, using multiply lensed quasars imaged with the ESO VLT in the optical and near infrared. The multiple images act as 'standard light sources' shining through different parts of the lensing galaxy, allowing for extinction studies by comparison of pairs of images. We explore the effects of systematics in the extinction curve analysis, including extinction along both lines of sight and microlensing, using theoretical analysis and simulations. In the sample, we see variation in both the amount and type of extinction. Of the ten systems, seven are consistent with extinction along at least one line of sight. The mean differential extinction for the most extinguished image pair for each lens is A(V) = 0.56 +- 0.04, using Galactic extinction law parametrization. The corresponding mean R_V = 2.8 +- 0.4 is consistent with that of the Milky Way at R_V = 3.1, where R_V = A(V)/E(B-V). We do not see any strong evidence for evolution of extinction properties with redshift. Of the ten systems, B1152+199 shows the strongest extinction signal of A(V) = 2.43 +- 0.09 and is consistent with a Galactic extinction law with R_V = 2.1 +- 0.1. Given the similar redshift distribution of SN Ia hosts and lensing galaxies, a large space based study of multiply imaged quasars would be a useful complement to future dark energy SN Ia surveys, providing independent constraints on the statistical extinction properties of galaxies up to z~1
