The New âHidden Abodeâ: Reflections on Value and Labour in the New Economy
In a pivotal section of Capital, volume 1, Marx (1976: 279) notes that, in order to understand the capitalist production of value, we must descend into the âhidden abode of productionâ: the site of the labour process conducted within an employment relationship. In this paper we argue that by remaining wedded to an analysis of labour that is confined to the employment relationship, Labour Process Theory (LPT) has missed a fundamental shift in the location of value production in contemporary capitalism. We examine this shift through the work of Autonomist Marxists like Hardt and Negri, Lazaratto and Arvidsson, who offer theoretical leverage to prize open a new âhidden abodeâ outside employment, for example in the âproduction of organizationâ and in consumption. Although they can open up this new âhidden abodeâ, without LPT's fine-grained analysis of control/resistance, indeterminacy and structured antagonism, these theorists risk succumbing to empirically naive claims about the ânew economyâ. Through developing an expanded conception of a ânew hidden abodeâ of production, the paper demarcates an analytical space in which both LPT and Autonomist Marxism can expand and develop their understanding of labour and value production in today's economy. </jats:p
Decision making and risk management in adventure sports coaching
Adventure sport coaches practice in environments that are dynamic and high in risk, both perceived and actual. The inherent risks associated with these activities, individualsâ responses and the optimal exploitation of both combine to make the processes of risk management more complex and hazardous than the traditional sports where risk management is focused almost exclusively on minimization. Pivotal to this process is the adventure sports coachesâ ability to make effective judgments regarding levels of risk, potential benefits and possible consequences. The exact nature of this decision making process should form the basis of coaching practice and coach education in this complex and dynamic field. This positional paper examines decision making by the adventure sports coach in these complex, challenging environments and seeks to stimulate debate whilst offering a basis for future research into this topic
A comparison of the illness beliefs of people with angina and their peers: a questionnaire study
BACKGROUND: What people believe about their illness may affect how they cope with it. It has been suggested that such beliefs stem from those commonly held within society . This study compared the beliefs held by people with angina, regarding causation and coping in angina, with the beliefs of their friends who do not suffer from angina. METHODS: Postal survey using the York Angina Beliefs Questionnaire (version 1), which elicits stress attributions and misconceived beliefs about causation and coping. This was administered to 164 people with angina and their non-cohabiting friends matched for age and sex. 132 people with angina and 94 friends completed the questionnaire. RESULTS: Peers are more likely than people with angina to believe that angina is caused by a worn out heart (p <0.01), angina is a small heart attack (p = 0.02), and that it causes permanent damage to the heart (p <0.001). Peers were also more likely to believe that people with angina should take life easy (p <0.01) and avoid exercise (p = 0.04) and excitement (p <0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The beliefs of the peer group about causation and coping in angina run counter to professional advice. Over time this may contribute to a reduction in patient concordance with risk factor reduction, and may help to create cardiac invalids
Limits on models of the ultrahigh energy cosmic rays based on topological defects

Please see the description link below for details.Using the propagation of ultrahigh energy nucleons, photons, and electrons in the universal radiation backgrounds, we obtain limits on the luminosity of topological defect scenarios for the origin of the highest energy cosmic rays. The limits are set as a function of the mass of the X particles emitted by the cosmic strings or other defects, the cosmological evolution of the topological defects, and the strength of the extragalactic magnetic fields. The existing data on the cosmic ray spectrum and on the isotropic 100 MeV gamma-ray background limit significantly the parameter space in which topological defects can generate the flux of the highest energy cosmic rays, and rule out models with the standard X-particle mass of 10Âčâ¶GeV and higher.R. âI didnât realise I was such a sausageâ: Menâs Accounts of Whole-body Scanning, Body Image, and Expected Changes in Health-related Behaviours
Objective: Whole-body scanning is now available in stores to assist buyers in choosing well-fitting clothes. This study was designed to investigate menâs accounts of scanning, body image, and expectations of behaviour change. Design: Ten men aged 18-39 years without histories of eating disorders or previous experience of whole-body scanning, took part in semi-structured interviews before and after scanning. Data were analysed using inductive thematic analysis. Results: Pre-scan, menâs body ideals were tall, slender, and relatively muscular. Post-scan, seven reported looking shorter, fatter, thinner, and/or less symmetrical than they hoped; three were pleasantly surprised by the images. Men were interested in scans as an objective view of their bodies and as a âwake-up callâ to motivate healthy behaviours. Five men intended to change their behaviour as a result of scanning, and repeat scanning was seen as a good way to monitor behavioural changes. Participants suggested that scanning may raise body concerns in other men, though downplayed impacts on their own body image. Conclusion: Whole-body scanning may encourage men to exercise and eat more healthily. However, men became more negative about their bodies as a result of seeing their body scans, so scanning needs to be carried out with supervision and support
Racism, anti-racist practice and social work: articulating the teaching and learning experiences of Black social workers
In the mid 1990s a Black practice teacher programme was established in Manchester and Merseyside with the primary aim to increase the number of Black practice teachers in social work organisations, and in turn provide a supportive and encouraging learning environment for Black student social workers whilst on placement. In the northâwest of England research has been undertaken, to establish the quality of the practice teaching and student learning taking place with Black practice teachers and students. This paper is an exploration of the ideas generated within the placement process that particularly focused on the discourse of racism and antâracist practice. Black students and practice teachers explain their understanding of racism and antiâracist practice within social work. From the research, the paper will critique some of the ideas concerning antiâracism. In particular, it will question whether antiâracist social work practice needs to be reâevaluated in the light of a context with new migrants, asylum seekers and refugees. It will concluded, by arguing that whilst the terms antiâracism, Black and Minority Ethnic have resonance as a form of political strategic essentialism, it is important to develop more positive representations in the future
Production of antihydrogen at reduced magnetic field for anti-atom trapping
We have demonstrated production of antihydrogen in a 1T solenoidal
magnetic field. This field strength is significantly smaller than that used in
the first generation experiments ATHENA (3T) and ATRAP (5T). The
motivation for using a smaller magnetic field is to facilitate trapping of
antihydrogen atoms in a neutral atom trap surrounding the production region. We
report the results of measurements with the ALPHA (Antihydrogen Laser PHysics
Apparatus) device, which can capture and cool antiprotons at 3T, and then
mix the antiprotons with positrons at 1T. We infer antihydrogen production
from the time structure of antiproton annihilations during mixing, using mixing
with heated positrons as the null experiment, as demonstrated in ATHENA.
Implications for antihydrogen trapping are discussed
Centrifugal separation and equilibration dynamics in an electron-antiproton plasma
Charges in cold, multiple-species, non-neutral plasmas separate radially by
mass, forming centrifugally-separated states. Here, we report the first
detailed measurements of such states in an electron-antiproton plasma, and the
first observations of the separation dynamics in any centrifugally-separated
system. While the observed equilibrium states are expected and in agreement
with theory, the equilibration time is approximately constant over a wide range
of parameters, a surprising and as yet unexplained result. Electron-antiproton
plasmas play a crucial role in antihydrogen trapping experiments
Antihydrogen and mirror-trapped antiproton discrimination: Discriminating between antihydrogen and mirror-trapped antiprotons in a minimum-B trap
Recently, antihydrogen atoms were trapped at CERN in a magnetic minimum
(minimum-B) trap formed by superconducting octupole and mirror magnet coils.
The trapped antiatoms were detected by rapidly turning off these magnets,
thereby eliminating the magnetic minimum and releasing any antiatoms contained
in the trap. Once released, these antiatoms quickly hit the trap wall,
whereupon the positrons and antiprotons in the antiatoms annihilated. The
antiproton annihilations produce easily detected signals; we used these signals
to prove that we trapped antihydrogen. However, our technique could be
confounded by mirror-trapped antiprotons, which would produce
seemingly-identical annihilation signals upon hitting the trap wall. In this
paper, we discuss possible sources of mirror-trapped antiprotons and show that
antihydrogen and antiprotons can be readily distinguished, often with the aid
of applied electric fields, by analyzing the annihilation locations and times.
We further discuss the general properties of antiproton and antihydrogen
trajectories in this magnetic geometry, and reconstruct the antihydrogen energy
distribution from the measured annihilation time history.Comment: 17 figure
