    Frustrated Rotations in Nematic Monolayers

Tabe and Yokoyama found recently that the optical axis in a chiral monolayer of a ferronematic rotates when water evaporates from the bath: the chiral molecules act as propellers. When the axis is blocked at the lateral walls of the trough, the accumulated rotation inside creates huge splays and bends. We discuss the relaxation of these tensions, assuming that a single dust particle nucleates disclination pairs. For the simplest geometry, we then predict a long delay time followed by a non-periodic sequence of ``bursts''. These ideas are checked by numerical simulations.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Eur. Phys. J.

Closure and completeness problems in approximation theory

    Get PDF
Much of the work in the theory of approximation has crystallised around two classical problems; the first is the Tchebyshev problem of finding a polynomial of degree n which gives the best uniform approximation to a given continuous function on an interval. The second is that of Weierstrass, to show that every continuous function on a closed bounded interval can be uniformly approximated with arbitrarily small error by a polynomial. Closure and completeness problems fall in the second category. In this thesis, we look at some sequences of rational functions in certain Hilbert spaces of bounded analytic functions, and ask when every function in these Hilbert spaces can be approximated arbitrarily closely (in the Hilbert space norm) by finite linear combinations of the rational functions. Furthermore, we provide a characterisation of the closed subspaces that the rational functions generate in the case when this is not the whole space. Finally, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions in order that the rational functions will constitute Schauder bases in the closed subspaces which they generate

Mental Health Provider Shortage in Rural Communities

    Get PDF
This study examined the dire issue of mental health provider shortages in rural communities in the South, exploring the unique challenges faced by rural communities in the United States. Rural communities often struggle with limited access to mental health resources, resulting in disparities in care and exacerbating the burden on individuals facing mental health challenges. This study examines existing literature, highlighting the complex nature of the problem, including geographical, socioeconomic, cultural factors, and biblical perspectives that contribute to the shortage of mental health professionals in rural communities. Instrumental challenges identified include the shortage of credentialed mental professionals, lack of healthcare investment, geographical barriers, and stigma surrounding mental health. This study also discusses the impact of these challenges on the overall well-being of rural communities compared with their urban counterparts, emphasizing the need for intervention to fill the gap in mental health care delivery. In examining potential solutions, this study examines innovative approaches such as telemedicine initiatives, cross-state licensure, and incentives for mental health professionals to practice in rural areas. It emphasizes the importance of community engagement, cultural competence, and local, state, and federal coordination for better outcomes. The study concludes by underscoring the urgency of addressing the mental health provider shortage in rural communities to enhance access to quality care and improve the overall mental health outcomes for residents in these underserved areas

A Speech Act Analysis of Greetings in Cameroon Social Media

Various language practices occur in computer Mediated Communication era. E-greeting is singled out as a particular practice with its own linguistic forms on social media platforms. Among the social media users in Cameroon, it is undoubtedly observed that greeting is shared depending on the context, the social background, the space and familiarities of the interlocutors. Each speaker might find himself/herself tending to undertake this practice several times daily or occasionally once in contact with the audience. In this respect, greeting becomes one of the expressive acts mostly used in our daily life to acknowledge the presence of the addressee(s). The present work investigates the speech act of greetings in Cameroon Social Media. It aims at analyzing the most frequent verbal behaviours (greeting) associated with Francophone Cameroonian greetings which occur on Social Media platforms. The method used to elicit data were screenshots of messages on Meta (hereafter Facebook), WhatsApp and Messenger for statistical analysis. The corpus of the study forms a total of 436 both individual and group chats collected between 2020-2022.The results indicate that the type of greeting ‘good morning’ which is under time-bound greeting is the most frequently used form in Cameroon social media

Academic Performance of Virtual Students based on their Personality Traits, Learning Styles and Psychological Well Being: A Prediction

AbstractThe aim of this study was to distinguish the relations between the so-called variables and the education of virtual students. We also are to identify which of the variables could act as predictors suitable to interpret virtual education. The sample of the study consisted of the last-year students of the virtual education career of Shiraz University 200 students out of who were randomly selected to complete the questionnaire. The tools were: a short questionnaire comprising of 5 personality factors (NEO-FFI, Kolb's list of learning styles, the Ryff's model of psychological well being. The semester average mark of students was measured as the indicator of the educational progress of students. The results of this study reveal the correlation between personality traits and learning styles which could lead learners to a higher level of learning and, in turn, to the sense of self-satisfaction and enjoyment of the learning process
