    Shear layer excitation, experiment versus theory

    The acoustical excitation of shear layers is investigated. Acoustical excitation causes the so-called orderly structures in shear layers and jets. Also, the deviations in the spreading rate between different shear layer experiments are due to the same excitation mechanism. Measurements in the linear interaction region close to the edge from which the shear layer is shed are examined. Two sets of experiments (Houston 1981 and Berlin 1983/84) are discussed. The measurements were carried out with shear layers in air using hot wire anemometers and microphones. The agreement between these measurements and the theory is good. Even details of the fluctuating flow field correspond to theoretical predictions, such as the local occurrence of negative phase speeds

    CP-Violation in the Production of Tau-Leptons at TESLA with Beam Polarization

    We study the prospects of discovering CP-violation in the production of tau-leptons in the reaction {e+e- --> tau+tau- at TESLA, an e+e- linear collider with center-of-mass energies of 500 or even 800 GeV. Non-vanishing expectation values of certain correlations between the momenta of the decay products of the two tau leptons would signalthe presence of CP-violation beyond the standard model. We study how longitudinal beam polarization of the electron and positron beams will enhance these correlations. We find that T-odd and T-even vector correlations are well suited for the measurements of the real and imaginary parts of the electric dipole form factors. We expect measurements of the real part with a precision of roughly 10^-20 ecm and of the imaginary part of 10^-17 ecm. This compares well with the size of the expected effects in many extensions of the standard model

    Let GG be a finite union of disjoint and bounded Jordan domains in the complex plane, let K\mathcal{K} be a compact subset of GG and consider the set G⋆G^\star obtained from GG by removing K\mathcal{K}; i.e., G⋆:=G∖KG^\star:=G\setminus \mathcal{K}. We refer to GG as an archipelago and G⋆G^\star as an archipelago with lakes. Denote by {pn(G,z)}n=0∞\{p_n(G,z)\}_{n=0}^\infty and {pn(G⋆,z)}n=0∞\{p_n(G^\star,z)\}_{n=0}^\infty, the sequences of the Bergman polynomials associated with GG and G⋆G^\star, respectively; that is, the orthonormal polynomials with respect to the area measure on GG and G⋆G^\star. The purpose of the paper is to show that pn(G,z)p_n(G,z) and pn(G⋆,z)p_n(G^\star,z) have comparable asymptotic properties, thereby demonstrating that the asymptotic properties of the Bergman polynomials for G⋆G^\star are determined by the boundary of GG. As a consequence we can analyze certain asymptotic properties of pn(G⋆,z)p_n(G^\star,z) by using the corresponding results for pn(G,z)p_n(G,z), which were obtained in a recent work by B. Gustafsson, M. Putinar, and two of the present authors. The results lead to a reconstruction algorithm for recovering the shape of an archipelago with lakes from a partial set of its complex moments.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figure

    Predictors of post-stroke aphasia recovery: A systematic review-informed individual participant data meta-analysis

    Background and Purpose: The factors associated with recovery of language domains after stroke remain uncertain. We described recovery of overall-language-ability, auditory comprehension, naming, and functional-communication across participants’ age, sex, and aphasia chronicity in a large, multilingual, international aphasia dataset. Methods: Individual participant data meta-analysis of systematically sourced aphasia datasets described overall-language ability using the Western Aphasia Battery Aphasia-Quotient; auditory comprehension by Aachen Aphasia Test (AAT) Token Test; naming by Boston Naming Test and functional-communication by AAT Spontaneous-Speech Communication subscale. Multivariable analyses regressed absolute score-changes from baseline across language domains onto covariates identified a priori in randomized controlled trials and all study types. Change-from-baseline scores were presented as estimates of means and 95% CIs. Heterogeneity was described using relative variance. Risk of bias was considered at dataset and meta-analysis level. Results: Assessments at baseline (median=43.6 weeks poststroke; interquartile range [4–165.1]) and first-follow-up (median=10 weeks from baseline; interquartile range [3–26]) were available for n=943 on overall-language ability, n=1056 on auditory comprehension, n=791 on naming and n=974 on functional-communication. Younger age (<55 years, +15.4 Western Aphasia Battery Aphasia-Quotient points [CI, 10.0–20.9], +6.1 correct on AAT Token Test [CI, 3.2–8.9]; +9.3 Boston Naming Test points [CI, 4.7–13.9]; +0.8 AAT Spontaneous-Speech Communication subscale points [CI, 0.5–1.0]) and enrollment <1 month post-onset (+19.1 Western Aphasia Battery Aphasia-Quotient points [CI, 13.9–24.4]; +5.3 correct on AAT Token Test [CI, 1.7–8.8]; +11.1 Boston Naming Test points [CI, 5.7–16.5]; and +1.1 AAT Spontaneous-Speech Communication subscale point [CI, 0.7–1.4]) conferred the greatest absolute change-from-baseline across each language domain. Improvements in language scores from baseline diminished with increasing age and aphasia chronicity. Data exhibited no significant statistical heterogeneity. Risk-of-bias was low to moderate-low. Conclusions: Earlier intervention for poststroke aphasia was crucial to maximize language recovery across a range of language domains, although recovery continued to be observed to a lesser extent beyond 6 months poststroke

    Treatment of non-fluent aphasia through melody, rhythm and formulaic language

    Left-hemisphere stroke patients often suffer a profound loss of spontaneous speech — known as non-fluent aphasia. Yet, many patients are still able to sing entire pieces of text fluently. This striking finding has inspired mainly two research questions. If the experimental design focuses on one point in time (cross section), one may ask whether or not singing facilitates speech production in aphasic patients. If the design focuses on changes over several points in time (longitudinal section), one may ask whether or not singing qualifies as a therapy to aid recovery from aphasia. The present work addresses both of these questions based on two separate experiments. A cross-sectional experiment investigated the relative effects of melody, rhythm, and lyric type on speech production in seventeen patients with non-fluent aphasia. The experiment controlled for vocal frequency variability, pitch accuracy, rhythmicity, syllable duration, phonetic complexity and other influences, such as learning effects and the acoustic setting. Contrary to earlier reports, the cross-sectional results suggest that singing may not benefit speech production in non-fluent aphasic patients over and above rhythmic speech. Previous divergent findings could very likely be due to affects from the acoustic setting, insufficient control for syllable duration, and language-specific stress patterns. However, the data reported here indicate that rhythmic pacing may be crucial, particularly for patients with lesions including the basal ganglia. Overall, basal ganglia lesions accounted for more than fifty percent of the variance related to rhythmicity. The findings suggest that benefits typically attributed to singing in the past may actually have their roots in rhythm. Moreover, the results demonstrate that lyric type may have a profound impact on speech production in non-fluent aphasic patients. Among the studied patients, lyric familiarity and formulaic language appeared to strongly mediate speech production, regardless of whether patients were singing or speaking rhythmically. Lyric familiarity and formulaic language may therefore help to explain effects that have, up until now, been presumed to result from singing. A longitudinal experiment investigated the relative long-term effects of melody and rhythm on the recovery of formulaic and non-formulaic speech. Fifteen patients with chronic non-fluent aphasia underwent either singing therapy, rhythmic therapy, or standard speech therapy. The experiment controlled for vocal frequency variability, phonatory quality, pitch accuracy, syllable duration, phonetic complexity and other influences, such as the acoustic setting and learning effects induced by the testing itself. The longitudinal results suggest that singing and rhythmic speech may be similarly effective in the treatment of non-fluent aphasia. Both singing and rhythmic therapy patients made good progress in the production of common, formulaic phrases — known to be supported by right corticostriatal brain areas. This progress occurred at an early stage of both therapies and was stable over time. Moreover, relatives of the patients reported that they were using a fixed number of formulaic phrases successfully in communicative contexts. Independent of whether patients had received singing or rhythmic therapy, they were able to easily switch between singing and rhythmic speech at any time. Conversely, patients receiving standard speech therapy made less progress in the production of formulaic phrases. They did, however, improve their production of unrehearsed, non-formulaic utterances, in contrast to singing and rhythmic therapy patients, who did not. In light of these results, it may be worth considering the combined use of standard speech therapy and the training of formulaic phrases, whether sung or rhythmically spoken. This combination may yield better results for speech recovery than either therapy alone. Overall, treatment and lyric type accounted for about ninety percent of the variance related to speech recovery in the data reported here. The present work delivers three main results. First, it may not be singing itself that aids speech production and speech recovery in non-fluent aphasic patients, but rhythm and lyric type. Second, the findings may challenge the view that singing causes a transfer of language function from the left to the right hemisphere. Moving beyond this left-right hemisphere dichotomy, the current results are consistent with the idea that rhythmic pacing may partly bypass corticostriatal damage. Third, the data support the claim that non-formulaic utterances and formulaic phrases rely on different neural mechanisms, suggesting a two-path model of speech recovery. Standard speech therapy focusing on non-formulaic, propositional utterances may engage, in particular, left perilesional brain regions, while training of formulaic phrases may open new ways of tapping into right-hemisphere language resources — even without singing

    Dosage, intensity and frequency of language therapy for aphasia: An individual participant data network meta-analysis

    Background and purpose: Optimizing speech and language therapy (SLT) regimens for maximal aphasia recovery is a clinical research priority. We examined associations between SLT intensity (hours/week), dosage (total hours), frequency (days/week), duration (weeks), delivery (face to face, computer supported, individual tailoring, and home practice), content, and language outcomes for people with aphasia. Methods: Databases including MEDLINE and Embase were searched (inception to September 2015). Published, unpublished, and emerging trials including SLT and ≥10 individual participant data on aphasia, language outcomes, and time post-onset were selected. Patient-level data on stroke, language, SLT, and trial risk of bias were independently extracted. Outcome measurement scores were standardized. A statistical inferencing, one-stage, random effects, network meta-analysis approach filtered individual participant data into an optimal model examining SLT regimen for overall language, auditory comprehension, naming, and functional communication pre-post intervention gains, adjusting for a priori-defined covariates (age, sex, time poststroke, and baseline aphasia severity), reporting estimates of mean change scores (95% CI). Results: Data from 959 individual participant data (25 trials) were included. Greatest gains in overall language and comprehension were associated with >20 to 50 hours SLT dosage (18.37 [10.58-26.16] Western Aphasia Battery-Aphasia Quotient; 5.23 [1.51-8.95] Aachen Aphasia Test-Token Test). Greatest clinical overall language, functional communication, and comprehension gains were associated with 2 to 4 and 9+ SLT hours/week. Greatest clinical gains were associated with frequent SLT for overall language, functional communication (3-5+ days/week), and comprehension (4-5 days/week). Evidence of comprehension gains was absent for SLT ≤20 hours, <3 hours/week, and ≤3 days/week. Mixed receptive-expressive therapy, functionally tailored, with prescribed home practice was associated with the greatest overall gains. Relative variance was <30%. Risk of trial bias was low to moderate; low for meta-biases. Conclusions: Greatest language recovery was associated with frequent, functionally tailored, receptive-expressive SLT, with prescribed home practice at a greater intensity and duration than reports of usual clinical services internationally. These exploratory findings suggest critical therapeutic ranges, informing hypothesis-testing trials and tailoring of clinical services

    Comparison of primordial tensor power spectra from the deformed algebra and dressed metric approaches in loop quantum cosmology

    Loop quantum cosmology tries to capture the main ideas of loop quantum gravity and to apply them to the Universe as a whole. Two main approaches within this framework have been considered to date for the study of cosmological perturbations: the dressed metric approach and the deformed algebra approach. They both have advantages and drawbacks. In this article, we accurately compare their predictions. In particular, we compute the associated primordial tensor power spectra. We show -- numerically and analytically -- that the large scale behavior is similar for both approaches and compatible with the usual prediction of general relativity. The small scale behavior is, the other way round, drastically different. Most importantly, we show that in a range of wavenumbers explicitly calculated, both approaches do agree on predictions that, in addition, differ from standard general relativity and do not depend on unknown parameters. These features of the power spectrum at intermediate scales might constitute a universal loop quantum cosmology prediction that can hopefully lead to observational tests and constraints. We also present a complete analytical study of the background evolution for the bouncing universe that can be used for other purposes.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure

    Communicating simply, but not too simply: Reporting of participants and speech and language interventions for aphasia after stroke

    Purpose: Speech and language pathology (SLP) for aphasia is a complex intervention delivered to a heterogeneous population within diverse settings. Simplistic descriptions of participants and interventions in research hinder replication, interpretation of results, guideline and research developments through secondary data analyses. This study aimed to describe the availability of participant and intervention descriptors in existing aphasia research datasets.Method: We systematically identified aphasia research datasets containing ≥10 participants with information on time since stroke and language ability. We extracted participant and SLP intervention descriptions and considered the availability of data compared to historical and current reporting standards. We developed an extension to the Template for Intervention Description and Replication checklist to support meaningful classification and synthesis of the SLP interventions to support secondary data analysis.Result: Of 11, 314 identified records we screened 1131 full texts and received 75 dataset contributions. We extracted data from 99 additional public domain datasets. Participant age (97.1%) and sex (90.8%) were commonly available. Prior stroke (25.8%), living context (12.1%) and socio-economic status (2.3%) were rarely available. Therapy impairment target, frequency and duration were most commonly available but predominately described at group level. Home practice (46.3%) and tailoring (functional relevance 46.3%) were inconsistently available.Conclusion : Gaps in the availability of participant and intervention details were significant, hampering clinical implementation of evidence into practice and development of our field of research. Improvements in the quality and consistency of participant and intervention data reported in aphasia research are required to maximise clinical implementation, replication in research and the generation of insights from secondary data analysis
