I don’t like it because it eats sprouts: Conditioning preferences in children

    Get PDF
Although little is known about how preferences develop in childhood, work in adults suggests that evaluative responses to stimuli can be acquired through classical conditioning. In two experiments children were exposed to novel cartoon characters, that were either consistently paired with a picture of a disliked food (Brussels sprouts) or a liked food (ice cream). Relative preferences for these stimuli (and others) were measured before and after these paired presentations (Experiment 1): preferences for the cartoon character paired with Brussels sprouts decreased, whereas preferences for the character paired with ice cream increased. These preferences persisted after 10 un-reinforced trials. Experiment 2 replicated this finding using affective priming as an index of preference for the cartoon characters. These findings demonstrate that preferences to novel stimuli can be conditioned in children and result from associations formed between the stimulus and a stimulus possessing positive or negative valence

The IIT IPRO 370 Crisis Management and Security Program (CMS) is in its fourth stage of development. The current goal is to further develop the capabilities of our web based program that can be used by organizations to assist when determining how well their crisis management plans stand up to different methodologies, assessments, and scenarios during the testing process. Also to start marketing our web site to attract a community of many users to assist in the growth of the CMS program. The initial grant for this project was funded by the Homeland Security Innovation & Entrepreneurship Center. Ms. Irene Rozansky, CEO and founder of R&A Crisis Management Services Inc. will be our sponsor to ensure that we develop a program able to test existing crisis management plans for companies, organizations, and individuals who lack a response ready approach in times of crisis.Deliverable

Computational studies to understand the role of social learning in team familiarity and its effects on team performance

This paper concerns social learning modes and their effects on team performance. Social learning, such as by observing others\u27 actions and their outcomes, allows members of a team to learn what other members know. Knowing what other members know can reduce task communication and co-ordination overhead, which helps the team to perform faster since members can devote their attention to their tasks. This paper describes agent-based simulation studies using a computational model that implements different social learning modes as parameters that can be controlled in the simulations. The results show that social learning from both direct and indirect observations positively contributes to learning about what others know, but the value of social learning is sensitive to prior familiarity such that minimum thresholds of team familiarity are needed to realise the benefits of social learning. This threshold increases with task complexity. These findings clarify the level of influence that sociality has on social learning and sets up a formal framework by which to conduct studies on how social context influences learning and group performance
