Adherent Platelets and Surface Microthrombi of the Human Aorta and Left Coronary Artery: A Scanning Electron Microscopy Feasibility Study
As part of a feasibility phase of an investigator-initiated multicenter NIH supported study on the Pathobiological Determinants of Athero-sclerosis in Youth (PDAY), we report observations on microthrombi and adherent platelets on the intima of the aorta and left anterior descending coronary artery. The long-term objective of this cooperative study is to define more precisely the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis during late childhood and early adulthood and to investigate the influence of selected risk factors known to be associated with clinically manifest disease in later life. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was utilized to survey broad areas of arterial intima. Of 109 specimens studied from 52 cases, microthrombi composed of a mixture of aggregated platelets and fibrin and measuring approximately 30-70 μmin size were observed in about 10% of the specimens and in about 6% of the cases, while individually adherent platelets were observed in approximately 7% of the specimens and about 10% of the cases. Microthrombi and adherent platelets may be important in atherogenesis by stimulating proliferation of intimal smooth muscle cells through the release of a growth factor from platelets. The proton and deuteron F_2 structure function at low Q^2
Measurements of the proton and deuteron structure functions are
presented. The data, taken at Jefferson Lab Hall C, span the four-momentum
transfer range GeV, and Bjorken values from 0.009 to
0.45, thus extending the knowledge of to low values of at low .
Next-to-next-to-leading order calculations using recent parton distribution
functions start to deviate from the data for GeV at the low and
high -values. Down to the lowest value of , the structure function is
in good agreement with a parameterization of based on data that have been
taken at much higher values of or much lower values of , and which is
constrained by data at the photon point. The ratio of the deuteron and proton
structure functions at low remains well described by a logarithmic

Longitudinal-Transverse Separations of Structure Functions at Low for Hydrogen and Deuterium
We report on a study of the longitudinal to transverse cross section ratio,
, at low values of and , as determined from
inclusive inelastic electron-hydrogen and electron-deuterium scattering data
from Jefferson Lab Hall C spanning the four-momentum transfer range 0.06 GeV. Even at the lowest values of , remains
nearly constant and does not disappear with decreasing , as expected. We

Genomic prediction of dry matter intake in dairy cattle from an international data set consisting of research herds in Europe, North America, and Australasia

The DMI records were available on 10,701 parity 1 to 5 records from 6,953 cows, as well as on 1,784 growing heifers. Predicted DMI at 70 d in milk was used as the phenotype for the lactating animals, and the average DMI measured during a 60- to 70-d test period at approximately 200 d of age was used as the phenotype for the growing heifers. After editing, there were 583,375 genetic markers obtained from either actual high-density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotypes or imputed from 54,001 marker SNP genotypes. Genetic correlations between the populations were estimated using genomic REML. The accuracy of genomic prediction was evaluated for the following scenarios: (1) within-country only, by fixing the correlations among populations to zero, (2) using near-unity correlations among populations and assuming the same trait in each population, and (3) a sharing data scenario using estimated genetic correlations among populations. For these 3 scenarios, the data set was divided into 10 sub-populations stratified by progeny group of sires; 9 of these sub-populations were used (in turn) for the genomic prediction and the tenth was used for calculation of the accuracy (correlation adjusted for heritability). A fourth scenario to quantify the benefit for countries that do not record DMI was investigated (i.e., having an entire country as the validation population and excluding this country in the development of the genomic predictions). The optimal scenario, which was sharing data, resulted in a mean prediction accuracy of 0.44, ranging from 0.37 (Denmark) to 0.54 (the Netherlands). Assuming near-unity among-country genetic correlations, the mean accuracy of prediction dropped to 0.40, and the mean within-country accuracy was 0.30. If no records were available in a country, the accuracy based on the other populations ranged from 0.23 to 0.53 for the milking cows, but were only 0.03 and 0.19 for Australian and New Zealand heifers, respectively; the overall mean prediction accuracy was 0.37. Therefore, there is a benefit in collaboration, because phenotypic information for DMI from other countries can be used to augment the accuracy of genomic evaluations of individual countries.financial support for gDMI from CRV

Search for resonant diphoton production with the D0 detector
We present a search for a narrow resonance in the inclusive diphoton final
state using 2.7 fb-1 of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab
Tevatron ppbar Collider. We observe good agreement between the data and the
background prediction, and set the first 95% C.L. upper limits on the
production cross section times the branching ratio for decay into a pair of
photons for resonance masses between 100 and 150 GeV. This search is also
interpreted in the context of several models of electroweak symmetry breaking
with a Higgs boson decaying into two photons.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures
Measurements of differential cross sections of Z/gamma*+jets+X events in proton anti-proton collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
We present cross section measurements for Z/gamma*+jets+X production,
differential in the transverse momenta of the three leading jets. The data
sample was collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron proton
anti-proton collider at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV and corresponds to
an integrated luminosity of 1 fb-1. Leading and next-to-leading order
perturbative QCD predictions are compared with the measurements, and agreement
is found within the theoretical and experimental uncertainties. We also make
comparisons with the predictions of four event generators. Two
parton-shower-based generators show significant shape and normalization
differences with respect to the data. In contrast, two generators combining
tree-level matrix elements with a parton shower give a reasonable description
of the the shapes observed in data, but the predicted normalizations show
significant differences with respect to the data, reflecting large scale
uncertainties. For specific choices of scales, the normalizations for either

Search for scalar leptoquarks and T-odd quarks in the acoplanar jet topology using 2.5 fb-1 of ppbar collision data at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV
A search for new physics in the acoplanar jet topology has been performed in
2.5 fb-1 of data from ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV, recorded by the D0
detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The numbers of events with exactly
two acoplanar jets and missing transverse energy are in good agreement with the
standard model expectations. The result of this search has been used to set a
lower mass limit of 205 GeV at the 95% C.L. on the mass of a scalar leptoquark
when this particle decays exclusively into a quark and a neutrino. In the
framework of the Little Higgs model with T-parity, limits have also been
obtained on the T-odd quark mass as a function of the T-odd photon mass
Search for charged Higgs bosons decaying to top and bottom quarks in ppbar collisions
We describe a search for production of a charged Higgs boson, q \bar{q'} ->
H^+, reconstructed in the t\bar{b} final state in the mass range 180 <= M_{H^+}
<= 300 GeV. The search was undertaken at the Fermilab Tevatron collider with a
center-of-mass energy sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV and uses 0.9 fb^{-1} of data collected
with the D0 detector. We find no evidence for charged Higgs boson production
and set upper limits on the production cross section in the Types I, II and III
two-Higgs-doublet models (2HDMs). An excluded region in the (M_{H^+},tan\beta)

Search for right-handed W bosons in top quark decay
We present a measurement of the fraction f+ of right-handed W bosons produced
in top quark decays, based on a candidate sample of events in the
lepton+jets decay mode. These data correspond to an integrated luminosity of
230pb^-1, collected by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron
Collider at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. We use a constrained fit to reconstruct the
kinematics of the and decay products, which allows for the
measurement of the leptonic decay angle for each event. By comparing
the distribution from the data with those for the expected
background and signal for various values of f+, we find
f+=0.00+-0.13(stat)+-0.07(syst). This measurement is consistent with the
