    Self-assembly of Nanometer-scale Magnetic Dots with Narrow Size Distributions on an Insulating Substrate

    The self-assembly of iron dots on the insulating surface of NaCl(001) is investigated experimentally and theoretically. Under proper growth conditions, nanometer-scale magnetic iron dots with remarkably narrow size distributions can be achieved in the absence of a wetting layer Furthermore, both the vertical and lateral sizes of the dots can be tuned with the iron dosage without introducing apparent size broadening, even though the clustering is clearly in the strong coarsening regime. These observations are interpreted using a phenomenological mean-field theory, in which a coverage-dependent optimal dot size is selected by strain-mediated dot-dot interactions.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Microsatellite Development via Next-Generation Sequencing in Acacia stenophylla (Fabaceae) and Duma florulenta (Polygonaceae): Two Ecologically Important Plant Species of Australian Dryland Floodplains

    Duma florulenta and Acacia stenophylla are two ecologically important but understudied species that naturally occur on the floodplains and riverbanks of Australia’s arid and semi-arid river systems. This paper describes the discovery and characterization of 12 and 13 polymorphic microsatellite markers for D. florulenta and A. stenophylla respectively. The number of alleles per locus for D. florulenta ranged from 2-12 with an average of 6.1. Across all samples, observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.026 to 0.784 and 0.026 to 0.824 respectively and mean polymorphic information content was equal to 0.453. For A. stenophylla, the number of alleles per locus ranged between 2 and 8 with an overall mean of 4.8. Across all samples, observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.029 to 0.650 and 0.029 to 0.761 respectively and mean polymorphic information content was 0.388. The developed suites of 12 and 13 microsatellite markers for D. florulenta and A. stenophylla respectively provide opportunity for novel research into mechanisms of gene flow, dispersal and breeding system and how they operate under the extreme variability these species are exposed to in the environments in which they live

    Characterisation and quantification of changes in odorants from litter headspace of meat chickens fed diets varying in protein levels and additives

    The effect of dietary crude protein (CP) and additives on odor flux from meat chicken litter was investigated using 180 day-old Ross 308 male chicks randomly allocated to five dietary treatments with three replicates of 12 birds each. A 5 × 3 factorial arrangement of treatments was employed. Factors were: diet (low CP, high CP, high CP+antibiotic, high CP+probiotic, high CP+saponin) and age (15, 29, 35 days). The antibiotic used was Zn bacitracin, the probiotic was a blend of three Bacillus subtilis strains and the saponin came from a blend of Yucca and Quillaja. Odorants were collected from litter headspace with a flux hood and measured using selective ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS). Litter moisture, water activity (Aw), and litter headspace odorant concentrations were correlated. The results showed that low CP group produced lower flux of dimethyl amine, trimethyl amine, H2S, NH3, and phenol in litter compared to high CP group (P < 0.05). Similarly, high CP+probiotic group produced lower flux of H2S (P < 0.05) and high CP+saponin group produced lower flux of trimethylamine and phenol in litter compared to high CP group (P < 0.05). The dietary treatments tended (P = 0.065) to have higher flux of methanethiol in high CP group compared to others. There was a diet × age interaction for litter flux of diacetyl, 3-hydroxy-2-butanone (acetoin), 3-methyl-1-butanol, 3-methylbutanal, ethanethiol, propionic acid, and hexane (P < 0.05). Concentrations of diacetyl, acetoin, propionic acid, and hexane in litter were higher from low CP group compared to all other treatments on d 35 (P < 0.05) but not on d 15 and 29. A high litter moisture increased water activity (P < 0.01) and favored the emissions of methyl mercaptan, hydrogen sulfide, dimethyl sulfide, ammonia, trimethyl amine, phenol, indole, and 3-methylindole over others. Thus, the low CP diet, Bacillus subtilis based probiotic and the blend of Yucca/Quillaja saponin were effective in reducing the emissions of some key odorants from meat chicken litter

    A cyclic tri-nuclear α-diimine nickel(0) complex [{Ni(ÎŒ-L Me-2,4 )} 3 ] (2) was synthesized from a “pre-organized”, trimerized trigonal LNiBr 2 -type precursor [Ni 3 (ÎŒ 2 -Br) 3 (ÎŒ 3 -Br) 2 (L Me-2,4 ) 3 ]·Br (1; L Me-2,4 = [(2,4-Me 2 C 6 H 3 )NC(Me)] 2 ). In complex 2, the α-diimine ligands not only exhibit the normal N,Nâ€Č-chelating mode, but they also act as bridges between the Ni atoms through an unusual π-coordination of a C═N bond to Ni. Complex 2 is able to catalyze the cyclotrimerization of alkynes to form substituted benzenes in good yield and regio-selectivity for the 1,3,5-isomers, which is found to vary with the nature of the alkyne employed. This complex represents a convenient self-supported nickel(0) catalyst with no need for additional ligands and reducing agent

    Necrotic enteritis (NE) challenge and high dietary sodium (from sodium chloride) level on odor flux from broiler litter was investigated using 160 day-old Ross 308 male chicks randomly assigned to 4 dietary treatments with 4 replicates of 10 birds each. A 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was employed. Factors were: presence or absence of NE challenge and normal (1.6 g/kg) or high (4.0 g/kg) dietary sodium (Na) level. On d 20, odorants were collected from litter headspace with a flux hood and measured using selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS).     Buffered formic acid and a monoglyceride blend coordinately alleviate subclinical necrotic enteritis impact in broiler chickens

    The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of 2 different doses of a partially buffered formic acid product (Amasil NA; 61% formic acid, 20.5% sodium formate), and a monoglyceride blend of short- and medium-chain fatty acids (BalanGut LS P) on necrotic enteritis (NE) infected broilers in terms of performance, intestinal microbial population and shortchain fatty acids concentrations in the gastrointestinal tract. A total of 528-day-old as hatched Ross 308 broilers were allocated to 48 pens with 11 birds in each pen. Six dietary treatments applied in the study were: T1) nonsupplemented diet (Control); T2) antibiotic supplemented diets; T3) and T4) high (Starter: 0.5%; Grower and Finisher: 0.5%) and low (Starter: 0.3%; Grower and Finisher: 0.2%) dose of Amasil NA; and groups T5) and T6) high (Starter: 0.3%; Grower and Finisher: 0.2%) and low dose (Starter: 0.3%; Grower: 0.15%; Finisher: 0.075%) of (BalanGut LS P). All birds in this study were fed starter (d 0-10), grower (d 11−24) and finisher (d 25−35) diets and challenged with NE. To induce subclinical NE, oral administrations of Eimeria oocysts (d 9) followed by inoculation of Clostridium perfringens strains (d 14 and 15) were applied.     A lytic bacteriophage isolate reduced Clostridium perfringens induced lesions in necrotic enteritis challenged broilers

    Background Bacteriophages are viral predators of bacteria and are common in nature. Their host-specific infections against specific bacteria make them an attractive natural agent to control bacterial pathogens. Interest in the potential of bacteriophages as antibacterial agents in the production animal industries has increased. Methods A total of 18 bacteriophages were isolated from Australian commercial poultry environments, from which three highly active phages were chosen for enrichment. Sequencing libraries were prepared using a Nextera XT kit (Illumina) and sequenced on an Illumina MiSeq instrument using 2 × 300 bp paired-end chemistry. The sequence data were then assembled and aligned with a2 bacteriophage as the reference. An animal trial was performed by oral gavaging Clostridium perfringens netB containing strain EHE-NE18 to the Ross 308 broiler chickens prior inoculation with Eimeria species. The chickens were raised following the management guide for Ross 308 from d 0 to d 21 and fed with starter and grower diets met the specific breed nutrient requirements. Body weight gain and feed intake were measured on d 9 and d 21 and FCR adjusted with mortality was calculated. Results The isolated bacteriophages only had only 96.7% similarity to the most closely related, previously characterized, Clostridium bacteriophage indicated that they might represent a novel strain of bacteriophage. A “cocktail” containing the three bacteriophages was capable of lysing four known disease-inducing C. perfringens strains in vitro. Oral administration of the bacteriophages cocktail to broilers challenged with necrotic enteritis markedly alleviated intestinal necrotic lesions in the duodenum and jejunum on day 16 post-hatch. The phage treatment significantly reduced the lesion scores of birds challenged with NE (P 0.05). However, no effect on the growth performance was observed during the recorded period of days 9-21. Conclusion These findings suggest that bacteriophage treatment is a promising approach to protect intestinal health from C. perfringens induced necrotic enteritis. Further research will be required on the dosing, route of administration, and large scale validation studies to further advance this approach to pathogen control

    Energy dynamics, nitrogen balance, and performance in broilers fed high- and reduced-CP diets

    There has been extensive research on feeding broilers low-CP (LCP) diets to reduce nitrogen (N) excretion in the environment. It is well established that broilers fed LCP diets exhibit improvements in N efficiency, but this is coupled with inferior growth performance and poor carcass quality. Therefore, 2 experiments were undertaken to explore energy and N balance and performance in birds fed LCP diets to determine bird responses to dietary energy content. Both experiments used isoenergetic grower–finisher diets formulated to reduced- or high-CP (HCP) level. Measurements of AME, net energy, and N balance were conducted in a calorimetry system (experiment 1), and bird performance was measured in a floor pen feeding study (experiment 2). In experiment 1, birds fed the LCP diet had a comparatively higher ratio of energy (AME and net energy) intake to N retained, higher N efficiency (N retained/N intake), and higher ratio of energy retained as fat to total energy retention. In experiment 2, the LCP-fed birds had a comparatively higher feed conversion ratio at day 14 to 35 and a higher relative fat pad weight on day 35. Abdominal fat pad was positively correlated with the energy (AME and net energy) intake–to–weight gain ratio, suggesting that energy in excess was deposited as fat. These results present more highly efficient use of N in broilers reared on LCP diets. However, these birds also consumed excess energy relative to N retained, which was deposited as body fat accretion, thereby increasing the feed conversion ratio

    Multi-carbohydrase effects on energy utilization depend on soluble non-starch polysaccharides-to-total non-starch polysaccharides in broiler diets

    Non-starch polysaccharides (NSP), especially in water-soluble form, are a common anti-nutritional factor in cereal-based poultry diets. Consequently, carbohydrases are applied to diets to combat the negative effects of NSP on bird performance and health, particularly when feeding viscous grains. This study investigated the effect of supplementing multi-carbohydrases (MC) to broiler diets containing either low (LS) or high (HS) soluble NSP (sNSP) to total NSP (tNSP) ratios on energy partitioning, nitrogen (N) balance, and performance. A 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments (MC, no or yes; sNSP/tNSP, LS vs. HS) was applied, resulting in 4 dietary treatments, each replicated 8 times. These treatments were fed to Ross 308 broilers in closed-circuit indirect calorimetry chambers, with 2 birds (a male and a female) per replicate chamber (n = 64). The results showed that MC addition increased AME, net energy (NE), and AME/gross energy, regardless of sNSP/tNSP content (P P AMEi) per metabolic BW (BW0.70, P Nr, P NEi)/Nr (P RE) as fat per total RE (REf/RE, P P 0.70, AMEi/Nr, NEi/Nr, and REf/RE only in the HS-fed birds, and N efficiency only in the LS-fed broilers. This study demonstrated that MC application markedly increased feed energy utilization in all diets, and increased N efficiency in birds fed an LS diet

    Body weight and range usage affect net energy utilisation in commercial free-range laying hens when evaluated in net energy chambers

    Within a given free-range flock, some hens prefer to spend the majority of their time in the shed (stayers), while others frequently access the range (rangers). Laying performance has been associated not only with the development of these sub-populations but also with different body weights (BW). The purpose of this study was to determine if range usage, BW or a combination of both is associated with energy metabolism and as such contribute to improved hen performance. Forty-eight Lohmann Brown hens at 74 wk of age were selected from a commercial free-range farm based on their BW and range usage over a 56-week period. Using a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, hens were either classified as heavy (mean ± SEM; 2.01 ± 0.02 kg, n = 24) or light (1.68 ± 0.01 kg, n = 24), and also classified as rangers (accessed the range for 84.1% of available days, 242 ± 3.75 d; n = 24) or stayers (accessed the range for 7.17% of available days; 23.4 ± 6.08 d, n = 24). Stayers had significantly higher metabolizable energy (ME) intake per metabolic BW per d (0.852 vs. 0.798 MJ/kg BW0.75 per d; P = 0.025), higher heat production (0.637 vs. 0.607 MJ/kg BW0.75 per d; P = 0.005), higher heat increment (0.267 vs. 0.237 MJ/kg BW0.75 per d; P = 0.005) and retained more nitrogen (1.59 vs. 1.46 g/hen per d; P = 0.023) compared to the rangers. Light hens had significantly higher metabolic energy intake per metabolic BW (0.854 vs. 0.796 MJ/kg BW0.75 per d; P = 0.018), net energy (NE) intake (0.595 vs. 0.551 MJ/kg BW0.75 per d; P = 0.032), and retained energy (0.225 vs. 0.181 MJ/kg BW0.75 per d; P = 0.032), as well as lower heat production (0.936 vs. 1.003 MJ/hen per d; P = 0.002) compared to heavier hens. An interaction was observed across levels of analysis i.e. between light stayers and light rangers. The light rangers had significantly higher NE intake compared to the light stayers (9.77 vs. 9.27 MJ/kg BW0.75 per d; P = 0.024). In conclusion, light hens were more energy efficient compared to heavy hens. Moreover, light rangers had a more efficient feed utilisation compared to the light stayers
