The following paper aims to provide a multilayered review of the relationship between religion and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Firstly, an approach was made in regard of scrupulosity, so as to convey it as an incipient nosological entity formed by a wide range of religion-related obsessions and compulsions, which share obsessive fear of sinning (and its consequences) as a common denominator. Regardless of some data discrepancies, two consistent tendencies were surmised from the epidemiological studies at hand, namely: 1) based on clinical trials, the evidence that religion can be a direct causal factor of the POC is inconclusive; and 2) the claim that there is a complex and positive association between religiosity and the obsessive-compulsive phenomenon (particularly the symptoms and meta-cognitions which it involves) in mentally healthy people. By means of a cognitive-behavioural standpoint, a pondering effort was made so as to figure if certain dysfunctional meta-cognitions (for example, moral thought-action fusion) were likely to be specific mediators in the relationship between religion and OCD (or scrupulosity). Lastly, a discussion was made concerning certain precautions and adaptations, which need to be regarded in the treatment process, especially psychotherapy, in order to tailor to the particular idiosyncrasies of the scrupulous patient and thusly maximize its overall effectiveness. The subject of religious counseling was also taken as a matter of discussion. Objective: In conclusion, the aim of the following paper is to provide a literature review of the relationship between religion and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

Tribomechanical Comparison between PVA Hydrogels Obtained Using Different Processing Conditions and Human Cartilage

Designing materials for cartilage replacement raises several challenges due to the complexity of the natural tissue and its unique tribomechanical properties. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels have been explored for such purpose since they are biocompatible, present high chemical stability, and their properties may be tailored through different strategies. In this work, the influence of preparation conditions of PVA hydrogels on its morphology, water absorption capacity, thermotropic behavior, mechanical properties, and tribological performance was evaluated and compared with those of human cartilage (HC). The hydrogels were obtained by cast-drying (CD) and freeze-thawing (FT), in various conditions. It was found that the method of preparation of the PVA hydrogels critically affects their microstructure and performance. CD gels presented a denser structure, absorbed less water, were stiffer, dissipated less energy, and withstood higher loads than FT gels. Moreover, they led to friction coefficients against stainless steel comparable with those of HC. Overall, CD hydrogels had a closer performance to natural HC, when compared to FT ones.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Physiological changes taking place on the locomotive apparatus as a result of aging, such as muscular mass loss, body balance loss, reduced bone mass and osteoarthrosis cause limitations to the daily activities of elderly people, compromising their quality of life and making them weaker and dependent. Aged people who regularly practice physical activities have a higher level of functional independence and a better quality of life than the sedentary ones. This article addresses the key physiological changes with aging and provides a review of current literature about the effects of physical exercises on the locomotive apparatus of elderly individuals, specifying the best ways to prescribe physical exercises to this age group
