The predictability of advection-dominated flux-transport solar dynamo models

Space weather is a matter of practical importance in our modern society. Predictions of forecoming solar cycles mean amplitude and duration are currently being made based on flux-transport numerical models of the solar dynamo. Interested in the forecast horizon of such studies, we quantify the predictability window of a representative, advection-dominated, flux-transport dynamo model by investigating its sensitivity to initial conditions and control parameters through a perturbation analysis. We measure the rate associated with the exponential growth of an initial perturbation of the model trajectory, which yields a characteristic time scale known as the e-folding time τe\tau_e. The e-folding time is shown to decrease with the strength of the α\alpha-effect, and to increase with the magnitude of the imposed meridional circulation. Comparing the e-folding time with the solar cycle periodicity, we obtain an average estimate for τe\tau_e equal to 2.76 solar cycle durations. From a practical point of view, the perturbations analysed in this work can be interpreted as uncertainties affecting either the observations or the physical model itself. After reviewing these, we discuss their implications for solar cycle prediction.Comment: 33 pages, 12 figure

    A mean-field Babcock-Leighton solar dynamo model with long-term variability

Dynamo models relying on the Babcock-Leighton mechanism are successful in reproducing most of the solar magnetic field dynamical characteristics. However, considering that such models operate only above a lower magnetic field threshold, they do not provide an appropriate magnetic field regeneration process characterizing a self-sustainable dynamo. In this work we consider the existence of an additional \alpha-effect to the Babcock-Leighton scenario in a mean-field axisymmetric kinematic numerical model. Both poloidal field regeneration mechanisms are treated with two different strength-limiting factors. Apart from the solar anti-symmetric parity behavior, the main solar features are reproduced: cyclic polarity reversals, mid-latitudinal equatorward migration of strong toroidal field, poleward migration of polar surface radial fields, and the quadrature phase shift between both. Long-term variability of the solutions exhibits lengthy periods of minimum activity followed by posterior recovery, akin to the observed Maunder Minimum. Based on the analysis of the residual activity during periods of minimum activity, we suggest that these are caused by a predominance of the \alpha-effect over the Babcock-Leighton mechanism in regenerating the poloidal field.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figure

Overt disciplinary tactics disproportionately affect scholars of color. This field project aims to shed light on discipline policies across a variety of learning environments and provide scholars of color with the opportunity to self-advocate. I utilize a culturally relevant pedagogy in my framework component to stress the need for reciprocal relationships based on dignity and mutual respect. I provide effective alternative strategies, framed by culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP) and Gregory and Mosely’s theory of culturally relevant discipline (CRD), for addressing misconduct that emphasize stronger communication and greater leadership opportunities. My project consists of three parts: a modified communications policy in alignment with discipline guidelines at my work site, a core values rubric and a leadership council application packet that can be utilized across different learning environments that work to promote positive youth engagement. It is vital that schools offer a fair and supportive system of discipline that does not intentionally or unintentionally undermine the cultural, emotional, and mental well being of scholars of color by engaging in overly punitive discipline measures. Keywords: disproportionate discipline, reciprocal relationships, scholars of color, hegemony, consistent communication

BACKGROUND: Methylation at arginine residues (R) is an important post-translational modification that regulates a myriad of essential cellular processes in eukaryotes, such as transcriptional regulation, RNA processing, signal transduction and DNA repair. Arginine methylation is catalyzed by a family of enzymes known as protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs). PRMTs are classified as Type I or Type II, depending on the position of the methyl group on the guanidine of the methylated arginine. Previous reports have linked symmetric R methylation to transcriptional repression, while asymmetric R methylation is generally associated with transcriptional activation. However, global studies supporting this conclusion are not available. RESULTS: Here we compared side by side the physiological and molecular roles of the best characterized plant PRMTs, the Type II PRMT5 and the Type I PRMT4, also known as CARM1 in mammals. We found that prmt5 and prmt4a;4b mutants showed similar alterations in flowering time, photomorphogenic responses and salt stress tolerance, while only prmt5 mutants exhibited alterations in circadian rhythms. An RNA-seq analysis revealed that expression and splicing of many differentially regulated genes was similarly enhanced or repressed by PRMT5 and PRMT4s. Furthermore, PRMT5 and PRMT4s co-regulated the expression and splicing of key regulatory genes associated with transcription, RNA processing, responses to light, flowering, and abiotic stress tolerance, being candidates to mediate the physiological alterations observed in the mutants. CONCLUSIONS: Our global analysis indicates that two of the most important Type I and Type II arginine methyltransferases, PRTM4 and PRMT5, have mostly overlapping as well as specific, but not opposite, roles in the global regulation of gene expression in plants.Fil: Hernando, Carlos Esteban. Environmental influence on reproductive traits of buffel grass facultative apomictic genotypes and its implication in plant breeding

Cenchrus ciliaris L., a perennial C4 grass, is one of the most widely used forage species in warm and dry regions worldwide. The widespread use of the cultivar Texas raises concerns about genetic homogeneity and vulnerability. Hybridizations among facultative individuals could widen the genic pool. Therefore, a reproductive characterization of available genotypes is required. The objective of this study was to determine the reproductive mode, potential sexual expressivity, and seed fertility of four facultative apomictic genotypes throughout the flowering season, considering the influence of bioclimatic variables. We assessed the reproductive mode and potential sexual expressivity using the pistil clearing technique and seed fertility based on the production of seeds per panicle under open pollination and self-pollination. All the assessed genotypes behaved mainly as out-crossers throughout the flowering season and showed the highest potential sexual expressivity at the beginning of flowering. We confirmed the environmental influence on reproductive traits. At the beginning of the flowering season, the facultative apomictic genotypes exhibited the highest potential as female parent for hybridizations programs.Instituto de Fisiología y Recursos Genéticos VegetalesFil: Sanchez, Miguel Alejandro. The Effects of Different Intensities on Eccentric Cycling Blood Flow Patterns at a Concentric Cycling Workload Match

Decrease of blood flow to tissues, due to plaque built by atherosclerosis, increases mortality and morbidity. Homeostatic balance in the vascular system depends directly on endothelial cells, and blood flow, better known as endothelial sheer stress (ESS). Different types of blood flow patterns have been established measured by Reynolds number (Re), and turbulent flow has been associated with the decrease of ESS. Eccentric exercise (ECC) has gained attention as a novel exercise modality that increases muscle performance without increasing metabolic demands; however, little is known about ESS during ECC. PURPOSE: To determine the effects of ECC cycling in blood flow patterns in young, apparently healthy individuals. METHODS: 18 apparently healthy participants, were recruited for two laboratory visits. First visit served to obtain maximum oxygen consumption and peak power (PP), to determine workload intensities, followed by a 5-min familiarization on eccentric ergometer. Second visit on eccentric ergometer assessed blood flow patterns (i.e. ESS and Re measured via imaging ultrasound and Doppler) during a 3-workload steady exercise test at low, moderate, and high intensities. RESULTS: There was an interaction of exercise intensity on antegrade ESS (F(3,53.7)=26.90, p\u3c0.001), but not Sex (p\u3e0.05), and a random effect of participant (p\u3c0.001) and Re anterograde (F(3,53.6)=25.03, p\u3c0.001), but not Sex or random effect of participant (p\u3e0.05). There was an interaction of condition on retrograde ESS (F(3,53.4)=11.21, p\u3c0.001), but not Sex (p\u3e0.05), and a random effect of participant (p\u3c0.001). and Re retrograde (F(3,54.3)=12.34, p\u3c0.001), Sex (F(1,18.5)=4.41, p=0.05), and random effect of participant (p\u3e0.05). CONCLUSION: Eccentric cycling exercise produces exercise-induced blood flow patterns that are intensity-dependent in males and females and these patterns are similar to traditional concentric cycling
