Chaotic saddles in nonlinear modulational interactions in a plasma
A nonlinear model of modulational processes in the subsonic regime involving
a linearly unstable wave and two linearly damped waves with different damping
rates in a plasma is studied numerically. We compute the maximum Lyapunov
exponent as a function of the damping rates in a two-parameter space, and
identify shrimp-shaped self-similar structures in the parameter space. By
varying the damping rate of the low-frequency wave, we construct bifurcation
diagrams and focus on a saddle-node bifurcation and an interior crisis
associated with a periodic window. We detect chaotic saddles and their stable
and unstable manifolds, and demonstrate how the connection between two chaotic
saddles via coupling unstable periodic orbits can result in a crisis-induced
intermittency. The relevance of this work for the understanding of modulational
processes observed in plasmas and fluids is discussed.Comment: Physics of Plasmas, in pres
Chaos in driven Alfvén systems: unstable periodic orbits and chaotic saddles
International audienceThe chaotic dynamics of Alfvén waves in space plasmas governed by the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation, in the low-dimensional limit described by stationary spatial solutions, is studied. A bifurcation diagram is constructed, by varying the driver amplitude, to identify a number of nonlinear dynamical processes including saddle-node bifurcation, boundary crisis, and interior crisis. The roles played by unstable periodic orbits and chaotic saddles in these transitions are analyzed, and the conversion from a chaotic saddle to a chaotic attractor in these dynamical processes is demonstrated. In particular, the phenomenon of gap-filling in the chaotic transition from weak chaos to strong chaos via an interior crisis is investigated. A coupling unstable periodic orbit created by an explosion, within the gaps of the chaotic saddles embedded in a chaotic attractor following an interior crisis, is found numerically. The gap-filling unstable periodic orbits are responsible for coupling the banded chaotic saddle (BCS) to the surrounding chaotic saddle (SCS), leading to crisis-induced intermittency. The physical relevance of chaos for Alfvén intermittent turbulence observed in the solar wind is discussed
Hybrid nanoparticles based on sulfides, oxides, and carbides
The methods for synthesis of hybrid nanoparticles based on sulfides, oxides, and carbides of heavy and transition metals were considered. The problem of the influence of the method of synthesis of the hybrid nanoparticles on their atomic structure, morphology of the nanomaterials, and functional properties was analyzed. The areas of practical use of the hybrid nanoparticles were proposed. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York
Newly identified properties of surface acoustic power
The cause of enhanced acoustic power surrounding active regions, the acoustic
halo, is not as yet understood. We explore the properties of the enhanced
acoustic power observed near disk center from 21 to 27 January 2002, including
AR 9787. We find that (i) there exists a strong correlation of the enhanced
high frequency power with magnetic-field inclination, with greater power in
more horizontal fields, (ii) the frequency of the maximum enhancement increases
along with magnetic field strength, and (iii) the oscillations contributing to
the halos show modal ridges which are shifted to higher wavenumber at constant
frequency in comparison to the ridges of modes in the quiet-Sun.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, submitted to solar physic

Localized boundary-domain singular integral equations based on harmonic parametrix for divergence-form elliptic PDEs with variable matrix coefficients
This is the post-print version of the Article. The official publised version can be accessed from the links below. Copyright @ 2013 Springer BaselEmploying the localized integral potentials associated with the Laplace operator, the Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary value problems for general variable-coefficient divergence-form second-order elliptic partial differential equations are reduced to some systems of localized boundary-domain singular integral equations. Equivalence of the integral equations systems to the original boundary value problems is proved. It is established that the corresponding localized boundary-domain integral operators belong to the Boutet de Monvel algebra of pseudo-differential operators. Applying the Vishik-Eskin theory based on the factorization method, the Fredholm properties and invertibility of the operators are proved in appropriate Sobolev spaces. This research was supported by the grant EP/H020497/1: "Mathematical Analysis of Localized Boundary-Domain Integral Equations for Variable-Coefficient Boundary Value Problems" from the EPSRC, UK
Astrophysical turbulence modeling
The role of turbulence in various astrophysical settings is reviewed. Among
the differences to laboratory and atmospheric turbulence we highlight the
ubiquitous presence of magnetic fields that are generally produced and
maintained by dynamo action. The extreme temperature and density contrasts and
stratifications are emphasized in connection with turbulence in the
interstellar medium and in stars with outer convection zones, respectively. In
many cases turbulence plays an essential role in facilitating enhanced
transport of mass, momentum, energy, and magnetic fields in terms of the
corresponding coarse-grained mean fields. Those transport properties are
usually strongly modified by anisotropies and often completely new effects
emerge in such a description that have no correspondence in terms of the
original (non coarse-grained) fields.Comment: 88 pages, 26 figures, published in Reports on Progress in Physic
