Design and Expected Performance of the BTeV RICH
The BTeV experiment is a b-physics experiment designed to conduct precision
tests of the CKM description of CP violation and study rare processes involving
bottom and charm hadrons. The experiment will be located in the C0 interaction
region at the Fermilab Tevatron, and is intended to begin data-taking around
2007-2008. One of the most important elements of the BTeV spectrometer is the
ring-imaging Cerenkov detector (RICH) which is used for particle
identification. In this article we describe the BTeV RICH and present its
expected performance.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. Proceedings of the RICH2002 Conference, Pylos,

Dimethyl biphenyl-4,4′-dicarboxylate
The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C16H14O4, consists of one half-molecule of an essentially planar biphenyldicarboxylic acid ester, with the complete molecule generated by an inversion centre. The maximum deviation from a least-squares plane through all non-H atoms occurs for the peripheric methyl groups and amounts to 0.124 (2) Å. The solid represents a typical molecular crystal without classical hydrogen bonds. The shortest intermolecular contacts do not differ significantly from the sum of the van der Waals radii of the atoms involved
Fine-tuning of whispering gallery modes in on-chip silica microdisk resonators within a full spectral range
We investigate an efficient method for fine-tuning whispering gallery mode resonances in disk-type silica microresonators to reach an arbitrary frequency within the free spectral range of the system. This method is based on a post-production hydrofluoric acid etching process to precisely resize the radius of such microresonators. We show the effectiveness of this approach by tuning their resonance frequency within 10 GHz of specific hydrogen cyanide reference lines (P16, P18). This technique allows for simple and exact matching of narrow-linewidth lasers or spectroscopic lines with the high-Q resonances of on-chip silica microresonators. On-chip integration of single solid-state quantum emitters with a SiO2 photonic platform
One important building block for future integrated nanophotonic devices is the scalable on-chip interfacing of single photon emitters and quantum memories with single optical modes. Here we present the deterministic integration of a single solid-state qubit, the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center, with a photonic platform consisting exclusively of SiO2 grown thermally on a Si substrate. The platform stands out by its ultra-low fluorescence and the ability to produce various passive structures such as high-Q microresonators and mode-size converters. By numerical analysis an optimal structure for the efficient coupling of a dipole emitter to the guided mode could be determined. Experimentally, the integration of a preselected NV emitter was performed with an atomic force microscope and the on-chip excitation of the quantum emitter as well as the coupling of single photons to the guided mode of the integrated structure could be demonstrated. Our approach shows the potential of this platform as a robust nanoscale interface of on-chip photonic structures with solid-state qubits.European Fund for Regional Development of the European UnionBundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung https://doi.org/10.13039/501100002347Peer Reviewe
The HERA-B Ring Imaging Cherenkov Counter
The HERA-B RICH uses a radiation path length of 2.8 m in C_4F_10 gas and a
large 24 square meters spherical mirror for imaging Cherenkov rings. The photon
detector consists of 2240 Hamamatsu multi-anode photomultipliers with about
27000 channels. A 2:1 reducing two-lens telescope in front of each PMT
increases the sensitive area at the expense of increased pixel size, resulting
in a contribution to the resolution which roughly matches that of dispersion.
The counter was completed in January of 1999, and its performance has been
steady and reliable over the years it has been in operation. The design
performance of the RICH was fully reached: the average number of detected
photons in the RICH for a beta=1 particle was found to be 33 with a single hit
resolution of 0.7 mrad and 1 mrad in the fine and coarse granularity regions,
respectively.Comment: 29 pages, 23 figure
Wskaźniki rutynowego elektrokardiogramu w ocenie żywotności mięśnia sercowego u osób z dysfunkcją lewej komory kwalifikowanych do zabiegów rewaskularyzacji
Wstęp: W niniejszej pracy retrospektywnej ocenie poddano parametry elektrokardiogramu
rutynowego w celu określenia ich korelacji z wynikiem echokardiograficznego testu dobutaminowego
u chorych z dysfunkcją skurczową lewej komory.
Materiał i metody: Badaniem objęto 16 kolejnych pacjentów (13 mężczyzn, 3 kobiety, śr. wieku
59 ± 11 lat), u których wykonano echokardiograficzną próbę dobutaminową przed kwalifikacją do
zabiegów rewaskularyzacji. Badane parametry obejmowały ilościowy pomiar czasu trwania (d)
i amplitudy (A) odcinków, odstępów i załamków opisujących okres depolaryzacji i repolaryzacji
mięśnia komór — odpowiednio: zespołu QRS, odstępu QT, odcinka ST i załamka T.
Wyniki: Jedynie parametry opisujące zespół komorowy istotnie różnicowały chorych z dodatnim
i ujemnym testem dobutaminowym. Najbardziej znamienne różnice dotyczyły średniej
amplitudy zespołu QRS i sumy amplitud wszystkich zespołów komorowych. U 7 osób bez
istotnej poprawy w zakresie wskaźnika zaburzeń kurczliwości lewej komory (WMSI) w teście
dobutaminowym oba wymienione wskaźniki były istotnie niższe (0,79 ± 0,15 mV i 9,5 ± 1,8 mV)
niż u 9 pacjentów, u których WMSI uległ poprawie o co najmniej 0,25 pkt (odpowiednio: 1,17 ± 0,25 mV i 14,0 ± 3,0 mV). Przyjęcie progu 0,9 mV dla średniej amplitudy zespołu
QRS z 12 odprowadzeń EKG pozwala na zgodne przewidywanie zmiany WMSI w 13/16
przypadków (81,25%) przy czułości równej 86%, swoistości — 78%, dodatniej wartości prognostycznej
— 75% i ujemnej wartości prognostycznej — 87,5%. Podobną wartość diagnostyczną
obserwowano dla sumy QRS przy progu 10,5 mV i średniej połowy iloczynu czasu
trwania i woltażu wszystkich zespołów QRS przy progu 525 ms × mm.
Wnioski: Wybrane parametry rutynowego elektrokardiogramu korelują z wynikami echokardiograficznego
testu dobutaminowego. Sugeruje to, że ich ocena pozwoli przewidywać obecność
żywotnego mięśnia sercowego u chorych z niedokrwienną dysfunkcją lewej komory

Optical Atomic Clock aboard an Earth-orbiting Space Station (OACESS): Enhancing searches for physics beyond the standard model in space
We present a concept for a high-precision optical atomic clock (OAC)
operating on an Earth-orbiting space station. This pathfinder science mission
will compare the space-based OAC with one or more ultra-stable terrestrial OACs
to search for space-time-dependent signatures of dark scalar fields that
manifest as anomalies in the relative frequencies of station-based and
ground-based clocks. This opens the possibility of probing models of new
physics that are inaccessible to purely ground-based OAC experiments such as
models where a dark scalar field is strongly screened near Earth's surface
Muon `Depth -- Intensity' Relation Measured by LVD Underground Experiment and Cosmic-Ray Muon Spectrum at Sea Level
We present the analysis of the muon events with all muon multiplicities
collected during 21804 hours of operation of the first LVD tower. The measured
angular distribution of muon intensity has been converted to the `depth --
vertical intensity' relation in the depth range from 3 to 12 km w.e.. The
analysis of this relation allowed to derive the power index, , of the
primary all-nucleon spectrum: . The `depth -- vertical
intensity' relation has been converted to standard rock and the comparison with
the data of other experiments has been done. We present also the derived
vertical muon spectrum at sea level.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, to be published on Phys. Rev.
Upper Limit on the Prompt Muon Flux Derived from the LVD Underground Experiment
We present the analysis of the muon events with all muon multiplicities
collected during 21804 hours of operation of the first LVD tower. The measured
depth-angular distribution of muon intensities has been used to obtain the
normalization factor, A, the power index, gamma, of the primary all-nucleon
spectrum and the ratio, R_c, of prompt muon flux to that of pi-mesons - the
main parameters which determine the spectrum of cosmic ray muons at the sea
level. The value of gamma = 2.77 +/- 0.05 (68% C.L.) and R_c < 2.0 x 10^-3 (95%
C.L.) have been obtained. The upper limit to the prompt muon flux favours the
models of charm production based on QGSM and the dual parton model.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, RevTex. To appear in Phys. Rev.
