    High-temperature phase transitions in SrBi_2Ta_2O_9 film: a study by THz spectroscopy

    Time-domain THz transmission experiment was performed on a SrBi2Ta2O9\rm SrBi_2Ta_2O_9 film deposited on sapphire substrate. Temperatures between 300 and 923 K were investigated and complex permittivity spectra of the film were determined. The lowest frequency optic phonon near 28 cm1^{-1} reveals a slow monotonic decrease in frequency on heating with no significant anomaly near the phase transitions. We show that the dielectric anomaly near the ferroelectric phase transition can be explained by slowing down of a relaxational mode, observed in the THz spectra. A second harmonic generation signal observed in a single crystal confirms a loss of center of symmetry in the ferroelectric phase and a presence of polar clusters in the intermediate ferroelastic phase.Comment: subm. to J.     Periodic orbit bifurcations and scattering time delay fluctuations

    We study fluctuations of the Wigner time delay for open (scattering) systems which exhibit mixed dynamics in the classical limit. It is shown that in the semiclassical limit the time delay fluctuations have a distribution that differs markedly from those which describe fully chaotic (or strongly disordered) systems: their moments have a power law dependence on a semiclassical parameter, with exponents that are rational fractions. These exponents are obtained from bifurcating periodic orbits trapped in the system. They are universal in situations where sufficiently long orbits contribute.     Stochastic stabilization of cosmological photons

    The stability of photon trajectories in models of the Universe that have constant spatial curvature is determined by the sign of the curvature: they are exponentially unstable if the curvature is negative and stable if it is positive or zero. We demonstrate that random fluctuations in the curvature provide an additional stabilizing mechanism. This mechanism is analogous to the one responsible for stabilizing the stochastic Kapitsa pendulum. When the mean curvature is negative it is capable of stabilizing the photon trajectories; when the mean curvature is zero or positive it determines the characteristic frequency with which neighbouring trajectories oscillate about each other. In constant negative curvature models of the Universe that have compact topology, exponential instability implies chaos (e.g. mixing) in the photon dynamics.     The Network of Epicenters of the Olami-Feder-Christensen Model of Earthquakes

    We study the dynamics of the Olami-Feder-Christensen (OFC) model of earthquakes, focusing on the behavior of sequences of epicenters regarded as a growing complex network. Besides making a detailed and quantitative study of the effects of the borders (the occurrence of epicenters is dominated by a strong border effect which does not scale with system size), we examine the degree distribution and the degree correlation of the graph. We detect sharp differences between the conservative and nonconservative regimes of the model. Removing border effects, the conservative regime exhibits a Poisson-like degree statistics and is uncorrelated, while the nonconservative has a broad power-law-like distribution of degrees (if the smallest events are ignored), which reproduces the observed behavior of real earthquakes. In this regime the graph has also a unusually strong degree correlation among the vertices with higher degree, which is the result of the existence of temporary attractors for the dynamics: as the system evolves, the epicenters concentrate increasingly on fewer sites, exhibiting strong synchronization, but eventually spread again over the lattice after a series of sufficiently large earthquakes. We propose an analytical description of the dynamics of this growing network, considering a Markov process network with hidden variables, which is able to account for the mentioned properties.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures.     Exchange-spring behavior in bimagnetic CoFe2O4/CoFe2 nanocomposite

    In this work we report a study of the magnetic behavior of ferrimagnetic oxide CoFe2O4 and ferrimagnetic oxide/ferromagnetic metal CoFe2O4/CoFe2 nanocomposites. The latter compound is a good system to study hard ferrimagnet/soft ferromagnet exchange coupling. Two steps were used to synthesize the bimagnetic CoFe2O4/CoFe2 nanocomposites: (i) first preparation of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles using the a simple hydrothermal method and (ii) second reduction reaction of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles using activated charcoal in inert atmosphere and high temperature. The phase structures, particle sizes, morphology, and magnetic properties of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles have been investigated by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Mossbauer spectroscopy (MS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) with applied field up to 3.0 kOe at room temperature and 50K. The mean diameter of CoFe2O4 particles is about 16 nm. Mossbauer spectra reveal two sites for Fe3+. One site is related to Fe in an octahedral coordination and the other one to the Fe3+ in a tetrahedral coordination, as expected for a spinel crystal structure of CoFe2O4. TEM measurements of nanocomposite show the formation of a thin shell of CoFe2 on the cobalt ferrite and indicate that the nanoparticles increase to about 100 nm. The magnetization of nanocomposite showed hysteresis loop that is characteristic of the exchange spring systems. A maximum energy product (BH)max of 1.22 MGOe was achieved at room temperature for CoFe2O4/CoFe2 nanocomposites, which is about 115% higher than the value obtained for CoFe2O4 precursor. The exchange-spring interaction and the enhancement of product (BH)max in nanocomposite CoFe2O4/CoFe2 have been discussed.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure

    Semiclassical structure of chaotic resonance eigenfunctions

    We study the resonance (or Gamow) eigenstates of open chaotic systems in the semiclassical limit, distinguishing between left and right eigenstates of the non-unitary quantum propagator, and also between short-lived and long-lived states. The long-lived left (right) eigenstates are shown to concentrate as 0\hbar\to 0 on the forward (backward) trapped set of the classical dynamics. The limit of a sequence of eigenstates {ψ()}0\{\psi(\hbar)\}_{\hbar\to 0} is found to exhibit a remarkably rich structure in phase space that depends on the corresponding limiting decay rate.     Tratamiento quirúrgico percutáneo del hallux valgus mediante osteotomías múltiples

    Objetivo: Se presenta la experiencia del tratamiento del hallux valgus mediante la realización de osteotomía distal del primer metatarsiano y osteotomía de la falange con liberación del abductor por técnicas percutáneas. Material y método: Desde junio de 1996 hasta junio de 1997 han sido intervenidos 64 pacientes, la mayor parte mujeres con hallux valgus de grado moderado con un ángulo intermetatarsiano medio de 14.5° y un ángulo del complejo articular proximal (PASA) de 17,7° de media. Resultados: Los resultados obtenidos desde el punto de vista radiológico pusieron de manifiesto una corrección media de 5° del ángulo intermetatarsal y se obtiene un valor medio del PASA de 8,2°. La consolidación de las osteotomías se consiguió en el 100% de los pies sin retardos de consolidación significativos, salvo en un caso que precisó más de tres meses. Por lo que se refiere a las complicaciones, al no utilizar ningún medio de fijación, el desplazamiento de las osteotomías fue muy frecuente, pero sólo en un 8% de la serie tuvieron repercusión clínica. El acortamiento del primer metarsiano fue la norma alcanzando como media 0,7 cm, lo que se intentó compensar con un descenso de la cabeza del primer metatarsiano; la metatarsalgia por trasferencia en esta serie ocurrió en el 25% de los casos. No se presentaron alteraciones neurológicas, infección ni síndromes flebíticos postquiriírgicos. Conclusión: Parece que la técnica de Reverdin-Isham, por vía percutánea, es un buen método para el tratamiento del hallux valgus. ya que proporciona unos resultados clínicos muy aceptables, sin presentar complicaciones importantes; en el momento actual hay que asociar con mucha más frecuencia la realineación metatarsal a la cirugía del hallux valgus para evitar las metatarsalgias por trasferencia
