Farming Systems in the Central West of NSW: An Economic Analysis
The objectives of this report have been to describe important farming systems in the Central West of NSW, to gain some insights into current financial performance and to examine in more detail the role of pastures in these farming systems at a time when the profitability of wool growing has been low relative to grain growing. While farms and farming systems vary considerably across the region, a majority can be broadly grouped into a mixed livestock and cropping category. Although there is also significant variability within this category, two representative farms and farming systems were developed for the region with the assistance from a small group of farmers and extension staff from NSW Agriculture. One represents the farms and farming systems east of Condobolin and the other represents the farms and farming systems to the west of Condobolin. Whole-farm budget models have been developed for each to provide a description of the farms in this region and an indication of their current profitability. They are useful to give an indication of how farm income might be altered by the introduction of some new technology, a new enterprise such a pulse crop, or an alternative management practice. This report presents some examples of their application but importantly it has provided a template for the development of additional whole-farm budgets for alternative farming systems in this and other regions. Using the whole-farm budget representing farms east of Condobolin, and a linear programming model, PRISM Condobolin, this report shows that the optimal length of pasture is fairly insensitive to changing market signals for both cropping and livestock commodities. It also shows that although length of pasture is insensitive, the optimal mix of enterprises does change, highlighting the importance of considering the interactions between enterprises in whole-farm analysis.Industrial Organization, Production Economics,
Pre-Heated Isentropic Gas in Groups of Galaxies
We confirm that the standard assumption of isothermal, shock-heated gas in
cluster potentials is unable to reproduce the observed X-ray luminosity-
temperature relation of groups of galaxies. As an alternative, we construct a
physically motivated model for the adiabatic collapse of pre-heated gas into an
isothermal potential that improves upon the original work of Kaiser (1991). The
luminosity and temperature of the gas is calculated, assuming an appropriate
distribution of halo formation times and radiation due to both bremsstrahlung
and recombination processes. This model successfully reproduces the slope and
dispersion of the luminosity-temperature relation of galaxy groups. We also
present calculations of the temperature and luminosity functions for galaxy
groups under the prescription of this model. This model makes two strong
predictions for haloes with total masses M<10^13 M_sun, which are not yet
testable with current data: (1) the gas mass fraction will increase in direct
proportion to the halo mass; (2) the gas temperature will be larger than the
virial temperature of the mass. The second effect is strong enough that group
masses determined from gas temperatures will be overestimated by about an order
of magnitude if it is assumed that the gas temperature is the virial
temperature. The entropy required to match observations can be obtained by
heating the gas at the turnaround time, for example, to about 3 X 10^6 K at
z=1, which is too high to be generated by a normal rate of supernova
explosions. This model breaks down on the scale of low mass clusters, but this
is an acceptable limitation, as we expect accretion shocks to contribute
significantly to the entropy of the gas in such objects.Comment: Final, refereed version, accepted by MNRAS. One new figure and

Critical Perspectives on Undergraduate Black Women
This project is one of reclamation, an attempt to explore and name Black undergraduate women’s experiences in higher education scholarship. As a Black queer trans person, Audre Lorde knew all too well the ways in which society defined Black women and the dangers associated with the confinement embedded in those definitions. Today, there are many fantasies about Black women in higher education that must be critically interrogated and examined to illuminate the complexities of our experiences across the higher education landscape. This project is one effort devoted to the interruption of epistemic violence enacted to silence, marginalize, and dehumanize Black women, particularly at the undergraduate level. Scholars and practitioners know little about the experiences of Black undergraduate women, and what is presumed to be known has in large part been constructed outside Black women’s communities, devoid of a critical lens, and treated as insignificant
The Power, Capacity, and Resiliency of Women in Substance Use Disorder Recovery to Overcome Multiple and Complex Housing Transitions
Gendered understandings of housing transitions amongst women and especially amongst those in substance use disorder recovery are under-researched. To address this gap, this study explores the multifaceted challenges and pathways to housing stability amongst women in substance use disorder recovery in the UK. Through qualitative analysis of life course interviews with 15 women in recovery, it becomes evident that housing insecurity, instability, and frequent transitions are common experiences. The women in the sample faced housing instability, ranging from temporary supported accommodations to homelessness. Notably, escaping negative relationships with male partners emerged as a primary cause of homelessness among these women. What this article highlights, which has not been found elsewhere to date, is that housing transitions are essentially a social process for women in recovery. This study highlights the social dimension of housing transitions. The potency of social capital and social networks in determining housing stability and security amongst women is emphasised as they exchange negative forms of social capital for positive forms of social capital. Recommendations stemming from this study include the need for drug recovery and housing policies to integrate gender-specific strategies to adequately support women in recovery. Further, they need to adopt a broader perspective, emphasizing the importance of fostering positive social connections and networks when considering housing options for individuals in recovery. For women who have spent a long time in supported residential and therapeutic environments, there is a need to develop a scaffolded support system to help women transition to independent living. The utilisation of recovery capital (and CHIME) as frameworks may provide a basis upon which to map out holistic and sustainable pathways to housing stability and security for women in recovery due to their acknowledgement of interconnected and related life domains that produce change and transformation
Noise characterization of an atomic magnetometer at sub-millihertz frequencies
Noise measurements have been carried out in the LISA bandwidth (0.1 mHz to
100 mHz) to characterize an all-optical atomic magnetometer based on nonlinear
magneto-optical rotation. This was done in order to assess if the technology
can be used for space missions with demanding low-frequency requirements like
the LISA concept. Magnetometry for low-frequency applications is usually
limited by noise and thermal drifts, which become the dominant
contributions at sub-millihertz frequencies. Magnetic field measurements with
atomic magnetometers are not immune to low-frequency fluctuations and
significant excess noise may arise due to external elements, such as
temperature fluctuations or intrinsic noise in the electronics. In addition,
low-frequency drifts in the applied magnetic field have been identified in
order to distinguish their noise contribution from that of the sensor. We have
found the technology suitable for LISA in terms of sensitivity, although
further work must be done to characterize the low-frequency noise in a
miniaturized setup suitable for space missions.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figure
