    Get PDF

    Get PDF
The role of the skin barrier” Current report has two parts; the first is the caseload followed during the five months at the Hospital Veterinário do Baixo Vouga and the second integrates a monographic approach, with a bibliographic research regarding the diagnosis of allergy in dog, and the role of the skin barrier. A description of the most common allergic skin diseases in the dogs, such as atopic dermatitis, food allergy, flea-bite allergy and allergic contact dermatitis was done. As the majority of allergic diseases plays a negative role on the quality of life from pets and their owners, a precise diagnosis and treatment is fundamental. Main allergic skin diseases include dermatitis with erythema and pruritus, with no association with pathognomonic lesions. As many non-allergic causes may trigger similar pruritic-associated dermatitis, differential diagnosis is important to confirm an allergic condition and to allow a precise allergy diagnosis and further directed allergen avoidance or drug therapy

Sustainable Quality Management Systems in the Current Paradigm: The Role of Leadership

    Get PDF
This study supports the proposition that sustainability’s integration into Quality Management Systems (QMS) could be a viable pathway to the development of the Emergency paradigm, in which leadership plays a crucial role. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was performed in order to deepen leadership’s relationship with Quality Management (QM) from an evolutionary perspective. An exploratory survey was then conducted to assess quality managers’ perceptions of sustainability’s integration into QMS and their leadership styles, using the 5X Short Leader Form MLQ instrument. The results indicate that leadership is a critical element of QMS performance, enhancing transformational leadership, which appears to be the dominant self-perceived style of the quality managers who participated. Nevertheless, these practitioners recognise the difficulties in committing all employees to the sustainability journey. The theoretical and managerial implications give rise to this work. The SLR results could be a useful database to support future QM and Leadership research. The organisations could follow the suggested pathway to evolve their QMS to support solutions to some of the current challenges. At the same time, quality managers could reflect on their future professional challenges. This work has taken a step forward, indicating sustainable quality management systems as a viable pathway to explore QM knowledge regarding the Emergency paradigm, and thus enhancing leadership’s role. This research was funded by the Research Unit on Governance, Competitiveness and Public Policy (UIDB/04058/2020), the Centre for Innovation in Engineering and Industrial Technology (UIDB/04730/2020) and FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Peer interaction in mixed age groups: a study in the computer area of an early childhood education center in Portugal

The study was developed as a teacher-research project during initial teacher education – Masters Degree of Early Childhood and Primary Education, in Portugal. It analysed the interactions between children of 3 to 6 years old, during the use of the computer as a free choice activity, confronting situations between peers of the same age and situations between peers of different ages. The focus of the analysis was the collaborative interactions. This was a qualitative study. Children could choose the computer, amongst other interest areas, and work for around an hour in pairs. In the computer, children used mainly educational games. During four weeks, the interactions between the pairs were audio recorded. Field notes and informal interviews to the children were also used to collect data. Eleven children were involved in the study with ages ranging from 3 to 6 years old. Baseline data on children’s basic computer proficiency was collected using the Individualized Computer Proficiency Checklist (ICPC) by Hyun. The recorded interactions were analysed using the types of talk offered by Scrimshaw and Perkins and Wegerif and Scrimshaw: cumulative talk, exploratory talk, disputational talk, and tutorial talk. This framework was already used in a study in an early childhood education context in Portugal by Amante. The results reveal differences in computer use and characterize the observed interactions. Seven different pairs of children's interactions were analysed. More than a third of the interactions were cumulative talk, followed by exploratory talk, tutorial talk and disputational talk. Comparing same and mixed age pairs, we observed that cumulative talk is the more present interaction, but in same age pairs this is followed by exploratory talk whereas in the mixed age pairs it is tutorial talk that has the second largest percentage. The pairs formed by the children were very asymmetrical in terms of age and computer proficiency. This lead to the more tutorial interactions, where one children showed the other or directed him/her on how to play. The results show that collaboration is present during the use of a computer area in early childhood education. The free choice of the children means the adults can only suggest pairing suited to specific interactions between the children. Another way to support children in more exploratory talk interactions could be by discussing the way the older children can help the younger ones beyond directing or correcting their work

Reading is an activity that has been present in people's lives for thousands of years. With the introduction of technologies and new communication dynamics, it appeared a new book format, the e-book, result of the abbreviation of electronic book, which stood out for its characteristics of usability, which allowed a faster access to the information, with the incorporation of search engines. It revolutionized the book market, but also the ways of reading, which had a great impact worldwide, especially in the english speaking countries, of which America stands out.Portugal was not as enthusiastic as other countries to the appearance of the e-book, perhaps because it is a country with a weak book policy, with a population that is among the ones who read less in the European averages. Even the publishing market remains somewhat disconnected from this reality, but it is possible to verify a restruction of the editing techniques used, as well as an investment in technologies and human resources and a continuous cost in the maintenance of the format. The present dissertation consists of analyzing the impact of the e-book on students' reading habits and on the Portuguese publishing industry. An empirical investigation with a mixed approach where two different methods were used in data collection: questionnaires and interviews. The first is applied to university students and the second to the publishers. This study aims to update existing data on the subject and to think about the changes provoked by the appearance of the digital format, in order to understand whether or not the e-book is a successful product in the national market, what is its relevance for publishers and students' use and preference

The objective of the present work is to understand the view of Pau Rosa community, located in a rural area, approximately 30 km far from the city of Manaus, State of Amazonas, about the health/disease process and its relationship to nature. It is a qualitative research that is based on the presupposition that health and disease are socially and culturally built (Langdon, 1995). The fieldwork was composed of observations and collection of narratives. The data were collected in three moments: January 2007, July to October 2007, and in January/February 2008. The data analysis method had three stages or chronological poles, in agreement with Bardin (2004). The results show that nature and the health/disease process are intertwined and maintain a constant bond, in which nature sometimes provides aid and safety, sometimes it causes diseases. Therefore, it was possible to verify that the relationship between nature and the health/disease process is organized in a universe of reciprocities
