Imaging mass spectrometry detects dynamic changes of phosphatidylcholine in rat hippocampal CA1 after transient global ischemia
AbstractBackground and purpose: The initial steps in the cascade leading to cell death are still unknown because of the limitations of the existing methodology, strategy, and modalities used. Methods: Imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) was used to measure dynamic molecular changes of phosphatidylcholine (PC) species in the rat hippocampus after transient global ischemia (TGI) for 6min. Fresh frozen sections were obtained after euthanizing the rats on Days 1, 2, 4, 7, 10, 14, and 21. Histopathology and IMS of adjacent sections compared morphological and molecular changes, respectively. Results: Histopathological changes were absent immediately after TGI (at Day 1, superacute phase). At Days 2–21 after TGI (from subacute to chronic phases), histopathology revealed neuronal death associated with gliosis, inflammation, and accumulation of activated microglia in CA1. IMS detected significant molecular changes after TGI in the same CA1 domain: increase of PC (diacyl-16:0/22:6) in the superacute phase and increase of PC (diacyl-16:0/18:1) in the subacute to chronic phases. Conclusions: Histopathology and IMS can provide comprehensive and complementary information on cell death mechanisms in the hippocampal CA1 after global ischemia. IMS provided novel data on molecular changes in phospholipids immediately after TGI. Increased level of PC (diacyl-16:0/22:6) in the pyramidal cell layer of hippocampal CA1 prior to the histopathological change may represent an early step in delayed neuronal death mechanisms
Phonon dispersion and electron-phonon interaction in peanut-shaped fullerene polymers
We reveal that the periodic radius modulation peculiar to one-dimensional
(1D) peanut-shaped fullerene (C) polymers exerts a strong influence on
their low-frequency phonon states and their interactions with mobile electrons.
The continuum approximation is employed to show the zone-folding of phonon
dispersion curves, which leads to fast relaxation of a radial breathing mode in
the 1D C polymers. We also formulate the electron-phonon interaction
along the deformation potential theory, demonstrating that only a few set of
electron and phonon modes yields a significant magnitude of the interaction
relevant to the low-temperature physics of the system. The latter finding gives
an important implication for the possible Peierls instability of the C
polymers suggested in the earlier experiment.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
The Subaru Ly-alpha blob survey: A sample of 100 kpc Ly-alpha blobs at z=3
We present results of a survey for giant Ly-alpha nebulae (LABs) at z=3 with
Subaru/Suprime-Cam. We obtained Ly-alpha imaging at z=3.09+-0.03 around the
SSA22 protocluster and in several blank fields. The total survey area is 2.1
square degrees, corresponding to a comoving volume of 1.6 x 10^6 Mpc^3. Using a
uniform detection threshold of 1.4 x 10^{-18} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} arcsec^{-2}
for the Ly-alpha images, we construct a sample of 14 LAB candidates with
major-axis diameters larger than 100 kpc, including five previously known blobs
and two known quasars. This survey triples the number of known LABs over 100
kpc. The giant LAB sample shows a possible "morphology-density relation":
filamentary LABs reside in average density environments as derived from compact
Ly-alpha emitters, while circular LABs reside in both average density and
overdense environments. Although it is hard to examine the formation mechanisms
of LABs only from the Ly-alpha morphologies, more filamentary LABs may relate
to cold gas accretion from the surrounding inter-galactic medium (IGM) and more
circular LABs may relate to large-scale gas outflows, which are driven by
intense starbursts and/or by AGN activities. Our survey highlights the
potential usefulness of giant LABs to investigate the interactions between
galaxies and the surrounding IGM from the field to overdense environments at

Multiple magnetic scattering in small angle neutron scattering of Nd Fe B nanocrystalline magnet
We have investigated the influence of multiple scattering on the magnetic small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) from a Nd–Fe–B nanocrystalline magnet. We performed sample-thickness- and neutron-wavelength-dependent SANS measurements, and observed the scattering vector dependence of the multiple magnetic scattering. It is revealed that significant multiple scattering exists in the magnetic scattering rather than the nuclear scattering of Nd–Fe–B nanocrystalline magnet. It is considered that the mean free path of the neutrons for magnetic scattering is rather short in Nd–Fe–B magnets. We analysed the SANS data by the phenomenological magnetic correlation model considering the magnetic microstructures and obtained the microstructural parameters
Measurement of tau polarization in e+ e- annihilation at sqrt{s}=58 GeV
The polarization of tau leptons in the reaction e+ e- --> tau+ tau- has been
measured using a e+e- collider, TRISTAN, at the center-of-mass energy of 58
GeV. From the kinematical distributions of daughter particles in tau --> e nu
nu-bar, mu nu nu-bar, rho nu or pi(K) nu decays, the average polarization of
tau- and its forward-backward asymmetry have been evaluated to be 0.012 +-
0.058 and 0.029 +- 0.057, respectively.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure
Management of esophageal stricture after complete circular endoscopic submucosal dissection for superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) permits removal of esophageal epithelial neoplasms <it>en bloc</it>, but is associated with esophageal stenosis, particularly when ESD involves the entire circumference of the esophageal lumen. We examined the effectiveness of systemic steroid administration for control of postprocedural esophageal stricture after complete circular ESD.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Seven patients who underwent wholly circumferential ESD for superficially extended esophageal squamous cell carcinoma were enrolled in this study. In 3 patients, prophylactic endoscopic balloon dilatation (EBD) was started on the third post-ESD day and was performed twice a week for 8 weeks. In 4 patients, oral prednisolone was started with 30 mg daily on the third post-ESD day, tapered gradually (daily 30, 30, 25, 25, 20, 15, 10, 5 mg for 7 days each), and then discontinued at 8 weeks. EBD was used as needed whenever patients complained of dysphagia.</p> <p>Results</p> <p><it>En bloc </it>ESD with tumor-free margins was safely achieved in all cases. Patients in the prophylactic EBD group required a mean of 32.7 EBD sessions; the postprocedural stricture was dilated up to 18 mm in diameter in these patients. On the other hand, systemic steroid administration substantially reduced or eliminated the need for EBD. Corticosteroid therapy was not associated with any adverse events. Post-ESD esophageal stricture after complete circular ESD was persistent, requiring multiple EBD sessions.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Use of oral prednisolone administration may be an effective treatment strategy for reducing post-ESD esophageal stricture after complete circular ESD.</p
