Towards Understanding Reasoning Complexity in Practice
Although the computational complexity of the logic underlying the standard OWL 2 for the Web Ontology Language (OWL) appears discouraging for real applications, several contributions have shown that reasoning with OWL ontologies is feasible in practice. It turns out that reasoning in practice is often far less complex than is suggested by the established theoretical complexity bound, which reflects the worstcase scenario. State-of-the reasoners like FACT++, HERMIT, PELLET and RACER have demonstrated that, even with fairly expressive fragments of OWL 2, acceptable performances can be achieved. However, it is still not well understood why reasoning is feasible in practice and it is rather unclear how to study this problem. In this paper, we suggest first steps that in our opinion could lead to a better understanding of practical complexity. We also provide and discuss some initial empirical results with HERMIT on prominent ontologie
Rethinking Ephemeral Architecture. Advanced Geometry for Citizen-Managed Spaces
In recent years there have been a high amount of citizen initiatives that address the
complex problems of the contemporary city. There are empty or disused spaces
that have been reused for urban gardens, for social use, to encourage integration
and civic activities activation, etc. Traditional architectural processes do not provide realistic solutions to these initiatives that, along with limited financial resources, have led to the emergence of architectures and self-constructed facilities,
almost as an emergency mode, without necessary planning, media and constructive knowledge. The democratization of technology, thanks to laboratories of digital production, combined with knowledge of the properties of different surfaces
through the CAD-CAM tools, offers new opportunities for the development of a
lightweight, flexible and low impact architecture, very according to the needs of
citizens' initiatives that naturally arise in our cities. The new existing scenario contemplates the figure of the architect, or engineer, not only as an agent of the market, but as a professional able to propose efficient solutions to problems from
within, bringing their specific knowledge and serving as bridges between the new
technological solutions and the challenges of society
Surface treatment with UV-ozone to improve adhesion of vulcanized rubber formulated with an excess of processing oil
An excess of processing oil was intentionally added in the formulation of vulcanized styrene-butadiene rubber for analyzing the effect on the treatment with UV radiation combined with ozone (UV-ozone) in improving the adhesion to waterborne polyurethane adhesive in footwear. Due to the excess of processing oil in the rubber, poor adhesion was expected. Both the length of the treatment and the distance between the UV radiation source to the rubber surface were studied, and the effects of the treatment on the surface chemistry, wettability and surface energy, and topography of the rubber were analyzed. The treatment of the rubber with UV-ozone removed hydrocarbon moieties and zinc stearate from the surface, and surface oxidation (C-O, C=O and COO- groups formation) occurred. As a consequence, improved wettability and increased surface energy (mainly due to the polar component of the surface energy) were obtained. The increase in the length of treatment and for a distance of 3–5 cm from the rubber to the UV radiation source favored the effectiveness of the UV-ozone treatment. Besides, whereas the UV-ozone treatment for 3 min produced the ablation of surface contaminants mainly, longer lengths of treatment (i.e., 6–9 min) caused roughness and cracks on the rubber surface. The UV-ozone treatment also caused heating of the surface. Finally, the treatment with UV-ozone increased the adhesion of the rubber to waterborne polyurethane adhesive, the highest adhesion was obtained in the joints made with UV-ozone treated rubber for 3 and 6 min at a UV radiation source-rubber surface distance of 5 cm
The construction industry has recently developed new technologies to tackle the increasing
complexity of today’s building facilities and systems. Therefore, the term “Intelligent Building”
is becoming more often used to identify constructions that are able to integrate
simultaneously coexisting systems and subsystems in a building. In addition we start using
the term “Smart Building” implying further steps of system integration and interaction.
Analysing this subject in detail, there still actually remains the so-called automation isles, as
well as to apply extensively the concept of intelligent processing This communication intends
to analyse the state of art of the Intelligent Building concept and how the term “intelligent
processing” could be applied in order to search a high-level of energy efficiency and
sustainability.
Neurosis Obsesiva: Elaboraciones Freudianas.
Viscoelastic and adhesion properties of hot-melts made with blends of ethylene-co-n-butyl acrylate (EBA) and ethylene-co-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers
Several hot-melts (HMAs) were prepared by using blends of ethylene-co-n-butyl acrylate (EBA) and ethylene-co-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers - EBA/EVA. HMAs were prepared with mixtures of EVA copolymers with 18 (EVA18) and 27 (EVA27) wt% vinyl acetate contents and EBA copolymer with 27 wt% n-butyl acrylate, polyterpene resin and mixture of microcrystalline and Fischer-Tropsch waxes. HMAs made with EBA/EVA blends showed lower viscosities and reduced shear thinning than the ones made with EBA or EVA due to differences in compatibility, but both the set time and the open time were not affected as they depended mainly on the wax nature and amount. The increase of the vinyl acetate (VA) content in EVA copolymer reduced the crystallinity of the EBA/EVA blends. Even EBA copolymer was more compatible with EVA27 than with EVA18 (the α- and β-transitions shown in DMTA plots were closer) and the compatibility did not vary with the EBA content in the blends. The addition of polyterpene resin and the mixture of waxes decreased the compatibility of the EBA/EVA blends, the higher compatibility was observed for the HMAs made with only one copolymer. The tack of the HMAs depended on their EBA/EVA contents, EBA/EVA27 HMAs showed broader temperature interval with higher tack, while the tack of EBA/EVA18 HMAs blend decreased and the temperature interval with tack was shortened and shifted to lower temperatures. Adhesion to polypropylene film was improved in HMAs made with 75 wt% EBA/25 wt% EVA18 and 50–75 wt% EBA/50-25 wt% EVA27. The adhesion to aluminum film of EBA or EVA hot melts was improved only in the joints made with EBA/EVA 27 HMAs, more noticeably when they contained higher EBA content.Financial support by Technology and New Ventures Department of Repsol S.A.
The research is directed towards ways and means of temporary use of urban
spaces in order to promote urban regeneration and improving social inclusion of
such spaces.
The work is directed towards intervention in urban voids in areas at risk of social
exclusion, underused soils, spaces for public facilities that they are currently
unbuilt, or if available the same building is unused or partially used.
The research includes urban intervention levels linking techniques, media and
types of constructions used in public space, contemplating actions ranging from
signaling to the execution of installations and temporary pavilions.
It is estimated relevance developing indicators that assess the level of impact
occurred in the intervention / temporary urban action in order to revitalize the social
identity and improving social inclusion.
Carrying out temporary shares it is seen as an opportunity for finding solutions
for sustainable management of urban resources enabling to respond to the needs of
each area depending on the particular conditions of the population needs.
