    Resolving the Outer Disks and Halos of Nearby Galaxies

    In a hierarchical merging scenario, the outer parts of a galaxy are a fossil record of the galaxy's early history. Observations of the outer disks and halos of galaxies thus provide a tool to study individual galaxy histories and test formation theories. Locally, an impressive effort has been made to understand the halo of the Milky Way, Andromeda, and M33. However, due to the stochastic nature of halo formation, a better understanding of this process requires a large sample of galaxies with known halo properties. The GHOSTS project (PI: R. de Jong) aims to characterize the halos and outer portions of 14 nearby (D=4-14 Mpc) spiral galaxies using the Hubble Space Telescope. Detection of individual stars in the outer parts of these galaxies enables us to study both the morphological properties of the galaxies, and determine the stars' metallicity and age.Comment: Contributed talk; to appear in the proceedings of "Galaxies in the Local Volume" Sydney 8-13 July 200

    The web of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties

    Recent results on duality between string theories and connectedness of their moduli spaces seem to go a long way toward establishing the uniqueness of an underlying theory. For the large class of Calabi-Yau 3-folds that can be embedded as hypersurfaces in toric varieties the proof of mathematical connectedness via singular limits is greatly simplified by using polytopes that are maximal with respect to certain single or multiple weight systems. We identify the multiple weight systems occurring in this approach. We show that all of the corresponding Calabi-Yau manifolds are connected among themselves and to the web of CICY's. This almost completes the proof of connectedness for toric Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces.Comment: TeX, epsf.tex; 24 page

    The SuperCOSMOS Sky Survey. Paper III: Astrometry

    In this, the third in a series of three papers concerning the SuperCOSMOS Sky Survey, we describe the astrometric properties of the database. We describe the algorithms employed in the derivation of the astrometric parameters of the data, and demonstrate their accuracies by comparison with external datasets using the first release of data, the South Galactic Cap survey. We show that the celestial coordinates, which are tied to the International Celestial Reference Frame via the Tycho-2 reference catalogue, are accurate to better than +/- 0.2 arcsec at J,R=19,18 rising to +/- 0.3 arcsec at J,R=22,21 with positional dependent systematic effects from bright to faint magnitudes at the +/- 0.1 arcsec level. The proper motion measurements are shown to be accurate to typically +/- 10 mas/yr at J,R=19,18 rising to +/- 50 mas/yr at J,R=22,21 and are tied to zero using the extragalactic reference frame. We show that the zeropoint errors in the proper motions are 17 and are no larger than 10 mas/yr for R < 17 mas/yr.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures; accepted for publication in MNRA

    Mirror Manifolds in Higher Dimension

    We describe mirror manifolds in dimensions different from the familiar case of complex threefolds. We emphasize the simplifying features of dimension three and supply more robust methods that do not rely on such special characteristics and hence naturally generalize to other dimensions. The moduli spaces for Calabi--Yau dd-folds are somewhat different from the ``special K\"ahler manifolds'' which had occurred for d=3d=3, and we indicate the new geometrical structures which arise. We formulate and apply procedures which allow for the construction of mirror maps and the calculation of order-by-order instanton corrections to Yukawa couplings. Mathematically, these corrections are expected to correspond to calculating Chern classes of various parameter spaces (Hilbert schemes) for rational curves on Calabi--Yau manifolds. Our results agree with those obtained by more traditional mathematical methods in the limited number of cases for which the latter analysis can be carried out. Finally, we make explicit some striking relations between instanton corrections for various Yukawa couplings, derived from the associativity of the operator product algebra.Comment: 44 pages plus 3 tables using harvma

It allows to establish mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau spaces for which the mirror manifold had been unavailable in previous constructions.     We study flop-transitions for M-theory on Calabi-Yau three-folds and their applications to cosmology in the context of the effective five-dimensional supergravity theory. In particular, the additional hypermultiplet which becomes massless at the transition is included in the effective action. We find the potential for this hypermultiplet which includes quadratic and quartic terms as well as additional dependence on the Kahler moduli. By constructing explicit cosmological solutions, it is demonstrated that a flop-transition can indeed by achieved dynamically, as long as the hypermultiplet is set to zero. Once excitations of the hypermultiplet are taken into account we find that the transition is generically not completed but the system is stabilised close to the transition region. Regions of moduli space close to flop-transitions can, therefore, be viewed as preferred by the cosmological evolution.Comment: 18 pages, Latex, 8 eps-figures, typos correcte

    We prove that the collision of two solitary waves of the BBM equation is inelastic but almost elastic in the case where one solitary wave is small in the energy space. We show precise estimates of the nonzero residue due to the collision.     The obesity epidemic increases the interest to elucidate impact of short-chain fatty acids on metabolism, obesity, and the brain. We investigated the effects of propionic acid (PA) and caproic acid (CA) on metabolic risk factors, liver and adipose tissue pathology, brain function, structure (by MRI), and gene expression, during obesity development in Ldlr−/−.Leiden mice. Ldlr−/−.Leiden mice received 16 weeks either a high-fat diet (HFD) to induce obesity, or chow as reference group. Next, obese HFD-fed mice were treated 12 weeks with (a) HFD + CA (CA), (b) HFD + PA (PA), or (c) a HFD-control group. PA reduced the body weight and systolic blood pressure, lowered fasting insulin levels, and reduced HFD-induced liver macrovesicular steatosis, hypertrophy, inflammation, and collagen content. PA increased the amount of glucose transporter type 1-positive cerebral blood vessels, reverted cerebral vasoreactivity, and HFD-induced effects in microstructural gray and white matter integrity of optic tract, and somatosensory and visual cortex. PA and CA also reverted HFD-induced effects in functional connectivity between visual and auditory cortex. However, PA mice were more anxious in open field, and showed reduced activity of synaptogenesis and glutamate regulators in hippocampus. Therefore, PA treatment should be used with caution even though positive metabolic, (cerebro) vascular, and brain structural and functional effects were observed.</p

    Topological String Amplitudes, Complete Intersection Calabi-Yau Spaces and Threshold Corrections

    We present the most complete list of mirror pairs of Calabi-Yau complete intersections in toric ambient varieties and develop the methods to solve the topological string and to calculate higher genus amplitudes on these compact Calabi-Yau spaces. These symplectic invariants are used to remove redundancies in examples. The construction of the B-model propagators leads to compatibility conditions, which constrain multi-parameter mirror maps. For K3 fibered Calabi-Yau spaces without reducible fibers we find closed formulas for all genus contributions in the fiber direction from the geometry of the fibration. If the heterotic dual to this geometry is known, the higher genus invariants can be identified with the degeneracies of BPS states contributing to gravitational threshold corrections and all genus checks on string duality in the perturbative regime are accomplished. We find, however, that the BPS degeneracies do not uniquely fix the non-perturbative completion of the heterotic string. For these geometries we can write the topological partition function in terms of the Donaldson-Thomas invariants and we perform a non-trivial check of S-duality in topological strings. We further investigate transitions via collapsing D5 del Pezzo surfaces and the occurrence of free Z2 quotients that lead to a new class of heterotic duals.Comment: 117 pages, 1 Postscript figur

    Particle density fluctuations

    Event-by-event fluctuations in the multiplicities of charged particles and photons at SPS energies are discussed. Fluctuations are studied by controlling the centrality of the reaction and rapidity acceptance of the detectors.
