    Este artículo indaga el estado de situación de la industria nacional proveedora de bienes e insumos para la generación de energía eólica de baja potencia. Se intenta explorar la manera más adecuada de propender al valor agregado y a la sustitución de importaciones en los fabricantes nacionales de equipos de aerogeneradores y sus insumos, como así también delinear el impacto que un desarrollo de esta naturaleza tendría al interior de estas empresas. Los resultados permitirán contar con un marco de referencia para analizar con mayor precisión la potencialidad de la industria nacional proveedora de insumos de energía eólica. En este sentido, se constituirán en información relevante para el diseño de políticas públicas que promuevan a la industria nacional proveedora de energía eólica de baja potencia contribuyendo de esta manera a la industrialización de esa área.This article looks at the state of the national industry situation supplier of consumables for the generation of low power wind energy. We try to find the most adequate way to preferthe added value and the substitution of imports of the national manufacturers of aerogenerator equipment and their consumables, as well as to get to know the impact of what a development of this kind would be inside these companies. The results will allow us to have a reference framework to analyse with highest accuracy the potential capacity of the national industry supplier of wind power consumables. In this way, it will constitute relevant information for the design of public policies which promote the national industry supplier of lower power wind energy contributing to the industrialization of this area

    Reordering, inequality and divergent growth : processes of neighbourhood change in Dutch cities

In the Netherlands, restructuring of the welfare state and the housing market are examples. The paper examines the role of structural processes in neighbourhood income change in four Dutch cities (1999–2014) by decomposing total change into contributions of three factors: reordering of neighbourhood hierarchies; increasing inequality; and income growth. Results show regional variation in change components. Amsterdam and Utrecht stand out in contributions of growth; Amsterdam and the Hague in contributions of inequality. All cities’ core neighbourhoods are upgraded through reordering, a pattern often masked by increasing inequality.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    miRviewer: a multispecies microRNA homologous viewer

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression via binding to the 3' ends of mRNAs. MiRNAs have been associated with many cellular events ascertaining their central role in gene regulation. In order to better understand miRNAs of interest it is of utmost importance to learn about the genomic conservation of these genes.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>The miRviewer web-server, presented here, encompasses all known miRNAs of currently fully annotated animal genomes in a visual 'birds-eye' view representation. miRviewer provides a graphical outlook of the current miRNA world together with sequence alignments and secondary structures of each miRNA.     Neighbourhood change and spatial polarization : the roles of increasing inequality and divergent urban development

This study distinguishes between the effect of increasing inequality between neighbourhoods and the effect of exchanges in their relative positions which can be attributed to urban development processes. The paper identifies the relative roles of these processes in generating neighbourhood socioeconomic change in the Tel-Aviv metropolitan area in Israel, and analyses how they interacted in reshaping its socio-spatial structure. Tel-Aviv is an interesting case study because of a persistent north-south socioeconomic divide. During the research period (1995–2008) inequality in Israel has risen substantially following the integration in the global economy; at the same time, the metropolitan area went through extensive urban development and expansion to the rural fringe. To examine the contributions associated with increasing inequality and urban-development processes to neighbourhood income change we use a method that was originally presented in the context of individual income mobility and recently applied in the context of neighbourhood change. The results show that urban processes and inequality intensified the historical divide in different ways, and each factor can be associated with a typical spatial pattern. The interaction between the factors is diverse; in some places they reinforced each other, whereas in some they operated at opposite directions and offset each other.proofPublisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Novel insight into the non-coding repertoire through deep sequencing analysis

    Non-coding RNAs (ncRNA) account for a large portion of the transcribed genomic output. This diverse family of untranslated RNA molecules play a crucial role in cellular function. The use of ‘deep sequencing’ technology (also known as ‘next generation sequencing’) to infer transcript expression levels in general, and ncRNA specifically, is becoming increasingly common in molecular and clinical laboratories. We developed a software termed ‘RandA’ (which stands for ncRNA Read-and-Analyze) that performs comprehensive ncRNA profiling and differential expression analysis on deep sequencing generated data through a graphical user interface running on a local personal computer. Using RandA, we reveal the complexity of the ncRNA repertoire in a given cell population. We further demonstrate the relevance of such an extensive ncRNA analysis by elucidating a multitude of characterizing features in pathogen infected mammalian cells.     Downregulation of Mir-31, Mir-155, and Mir-564 in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Cells

    BACKGROUND/AIMS: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short non-coding regulatory RNAs that control gene expression and play an important role in cancer development and progression. However, little is known about the role of miRNAs in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Our objective is to decipher a miRNA expression signature associated with CML and to determine potential target genes and signaling pathways affected by these signature miRNAs. RESULTS: Using miRNA microarrays and miRNA real-time PCR we characterized the miRNAs expression profile of CML cell lines and patients in reference to non-CML cell lines and healthy blood. Of all miRNAs tested, miR-31, miR-155, and miR-564 were down-regulated in CML cells. Down-regulation of these miRNAs was dependent on BCR-ABL activity. We next analyzed predicted targets and affected pathways of the deregulated miRNAs. As expected, in K562 cells, the expression of several of these targets was inverted to that of the miRNA putatively regulating them. Reassuringly, the analysis identified CML as the main disease associated with these miRNAs. MAPK, ErbB, mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were the main molecular pathways related with these expression patterns. Utilizing Venn diagrams we found appreciable overlap between the CML-related miRNAs and the signaling pathways-related miRNAs. CONCLUSIONS: The miRNAs identified in this study might offer a pivotal role in CML. Nevertheless, while these data point to a central disease, the precise molecular pathway/s targeted by these miRNAs is variable implying a high level of complexity of miRNA target selection and regulation. These deregulated miRNAs highlight new candidate gene targets allowing for a better understanding of the molecular mechanism underlying the development of CML, and propose possible new avenues for therapeutic treatment

    Improving healthcare delivery at a district hospital through teaching interns – A short report

    Every district in Malawi has at least two doctors managing the social and healthcare needs of the local population. The medical doctors at the district are involved in administrative work and have minimal time for clinical practice. As such in most district hospitals, clinical officers (COs) form the backbone of patient care provision. These are cadres that have a 3-year training in clinical medicine; they work side by side with medical assistants (MAs) and nurses. Apart from the Ministry of Health (MoH) workforce, the Department of Family Medicine (FM) of Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) has its main district site at Mangochi. Family physicians and residents from FM department assist in provision of mentorship and teaching to other cadres. Work-based learning requires various strategies and approaches. The experience reported here involves deliberate mentorship and support to enhance the learning of other cadres. Family medicine residents learn through the active participation in these sessions to become future consultants and leaders in primary health care

    A Service-Oriented Healthcare Message Alerting Architecture in an Asia Medical Center: A Case Study

    This paper illustrates how our development team has used some information technologies to let physicians obtain an instant abnormal laboratory result report for critical patient care services. We have implemented a healthcare message alerting system (HMAS) on a healthcare short message service (HSMS) engine and the distributed healthcare-oriented service environment (DiHOSE) in the National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH). The HSMS engine has a general interface for all applications which could easily send any kind of alerting messages. Fundamentally, the DiHOSE uses HL7 standard formats to process the information exchange behaviors and can be flexibly extended for reasonable user requirements. The disease surveillance subsystem is an integral part of NTUH new hospital information system which is based on DiHOSE and the disease surveillance subsystem would send alerting messages through the HSMS engine. The latest cell phone message alerting subsystem, a case study, in NTUH proved that the DiHOSE could integrate the user required functions without much work. We concluded that both HSMS and DiHOSE can generalize and extend application demands efficiently

    Integrating palliative care into primary care for older people with multimorbid serious illness: a multinational qualitative cross-sectional study in Sub-Saharan Africa

    Background .The WHO primary palliative care strategy states that palliative care is ‘an ethical responsibility of health systems’ and calls for integration of palliative care into public healthcare systems to achieve universal health coverage. We aimed to determine stakeholders’ perspectives on the necessary components of and considerations for a feasible and acceptable model of integrated palliative care and primary care for older people living with serious multimorbid illness in Sub-Saharan Africa. Methods. We conducted a multicountry cross-sectional qualitative study in Ghana, Malawi and Zimbabwe. In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with multimorbid older people and family caregivers. Focus groups were conducted with healthcare staff. Verbatim transcripts were subjected to inductive framework analysis to identify stakeholders’ needs and preferences for delivering and receiving palliative care in primary care facilities. Results. The coding framework identified five main themes: (i) communication; (ii) coordination of care; (iii) impact of living with chronic illness; (iv) seeking healthcare; and (v) living with chronic illness: coping strategies and resources. The impact of multimorbid illness on older people was multidimensional, including pain and symptom control, catastrophic spending, social exclusion and limitations on activities of daily living. Specific challenges were identified in care pathways and delivery. Communication was sub-optimal, with lack of appropriate information and patient involvement. Conclusion. Person-centred approaches are required to deliver palliative care to older multimorbid people in primary care settings. This study informs implementation of the WHO Healthy Ageing Policy intention to deliver person-centred primary palliative care and the WHO primary palliative care guidance

    Regulation of Cancer Aggressive Features in Melanoma Cells by MicroRNAs

    MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs with regulatory roles, which are involved in a broad spectrum of physiological and pathological processes, including cancer. A common strategy for identification of miRNAs involved in cell transformation is to compare malignant cells to normal cells. Here we focus on identification of miRNAs that regulate the aggressive phenotype of melanoma cells. To avoid differences due to genetic background, a comparative high-throughput miRNA profiling was performed on two isogenic human melanoma cell lines that display major differences in their net proliferation, invasion and tube formation activities. This screening revealed two major cohorts of differentially expressed miRNAs. We speculated that miRNAs up-regulated in the more-aggressive cell line contribute oncogenic features, while the down-regulated miRNAs are tumor suppressive. This assumption was further tested experimentally on five candidate tumor suppressive miRNAs (miR-31, -34a, -184, -185 and -204) and on one candidate oncogenic miRNA (miR-17-5p), all of which have never been reported before in cutaneous melanoma. Remarkably, all candidate Suppressive-miRNAs inhibited net proliferation, invasion or tube formation, while miR-17-5p enhanced cell proliferation. miR-34a and miR-185 were further shown to inhibit the growth of melanoma xenografts when implanted in SCID-NOD mice. Finally, all six candidate miRNAs were detected in 15 different metastatic melanoma specimens, attesting for the physiological relevance of our findings. Collectively, these findings may prove instrumental for understanding mechanisms of disease and for development of novel therapeutic and staging technologies for melanoma
