    On Scale Invariance and Anomalies in Quantum Mechanics

    We re-consider the quantum mechanics of scale invariant potentials in two dimensions. The breaking of scale invariance by quantum effects is analyzed by the explicit evaluation of the phase shift and the self-adjoint extension method. We argue that the breaking of scale invariance reported in the literature for the δ\delta(r) potential, is an example of explicit and not an anomaly or quantum mechanical symmetry breaking.Comment: 15 pp in latex, no figure

    The Survivin and cIAP1 Anti-apoptotic Proteins are Differentially Downregulated in Response to Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress

    The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is an organelle tasked with synthesis and transport of 50% of new cellular proteins. Dysfunction within this organelle creates signals for repair, adaptation, and in severe cases, cellular apoptosis. Multiple human diseases have been associated with ER dysfunction, and the activation of apoptosis in important populations of cells. Inhibitor of Apoptosis (IAP) proteins are cytosolic proteins that play an anti-apoptotic role in the cytosol. The relationship between endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and the expression/stability of IAPs is not well characterized. The objective of this study was to characterize the affect of ER stress on the expression/stability of five members of the IAP family; XIAP, cIAP1, cIAP2, Survivin, and Livin. We also assessed how inhibition of the PI3kinase/Akt pathway affects expression of these proteins. In model cell lines (BHK21, A549), Survivin and cIAP1 expression was detected by immunoblot. ER stress was shown to induce a reduction of both Survivin and cIAP1 in a time and dose dependent manner, with Survivin displaying a more dynamic response. The phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI3K) pathway has been associated with regulating expression of some IAP proteins. Inhibition of the PI3K decreased Survivin expression in both cell lines. Further research is required to confirm the affects of ER stress upon regulation of IAP expression (PI3K) and upon stability

    Future challenges of representing land-processes in studies on land-atmosphere interactions

    Over recent years, it has become increasingly apparent that climate change and air pollution need to be considered jointly for improved attribution and projections of human-caused changes in the Earth system. Exchange processes at the land surface come into play in this context, because many compounds that either act as greenhouse gases, as pollutant precursors, or both, have not only anthropogenic but also terrestrial sources and sinks. And since the fluxes of multiple gases and particulate matter between the terrestrial biota and the atmosphere are directly or indirectly coupled to vegetation and soil carbon, nutrient and water balances, quantification of their geographic patterns or changes over time requires due consideration of the underlying biological processes. In this review we highlight a number of critical aspects and recent progress in this respect, identifying in particular a number of areas where studies have shown that accounting for ecological process understanding can alter global model projections of land-atmosphere interactions substantially. Specifically, this concerns the improved quantification of uncertainties and dynamic system responses, including acclimation, and the incorporation of exchange processes that so far have been missing from global models even though they are proposed to be of relevance for our understanding of terrestrial biota-climate feedbacks. Progress has also been made regarding studies on the impacts of land use/land cover change on climate change, but the absence of a mechanistically based representation of human responseprocesses in ecosystem models that are coupled to climate models limits our ability to analyse how climate change or air pollution in turn might affect human land use. A more integrated perspective is necessary and should become an active area of research that bridges the socio-economic and biophysical communities

    Detection of Musical Notes Using a Polyphonic Pitch Tracking Embedded System

    Detection of polyphonic notes using embedded systems is a field that has not been explored. This article describes a polyphonic tracking embedded system that can detect on real time single and multiple musical notes, as well as their time duration. The solution was designed on an embedded system with a Cortex M-7 core as processor. This was achieved with an algorithm using fast Fourier transform iterating on two buffers in coordination with the direct memory access peripheral. The proposed embedded system was able to detect multiple musical notes on real time. Future works could use the results of this design and export them to a real music editing format.ITESO, A. C

    Evidence that fish death after Vibrio vulnificus infection is due to an acute inflammatory response triggered by a toxin of the MARTX family.

    Vibrio vulnificus is an emerging zoonotic pathogen associated with fish farms that is capable of causing a hemorrhagic septicemia known as warm-water vibriosis. According to a recent transcriptomic and functional study, the death of fish due to vibriosis is more related to the inflammatory response of the host than to the tissue lesions caused by the pathogen. In this work, we hypothesize that the RtxA1 toxin (a V. vulnificus toxin of the MARTX (Multifunctional Autoprocessing Repeats in Toxin) family) is the key virulence factor that would directly or indirectly trigger this fatal inflammatory response. Our hypothesis was based on previous studies that showed that rtxA1-deficient mutants maintained their ability to colonize and invade, but were unable to kill fish. To demonstrate this hypothesis, we infected eels (model of fish vibriosis) by immersion with a mutant deficient in RtxA1 production and analyzed their transcriptome in blood, red blood cells and white blood cells during early vibriosis (0, 3 and 12 h post-infection). The transcriptomic results were compared with those obtained in the previous study in which eels were infected with the V. vulnificus parental strain, and were functionally validated. Overall, our results confirm that fish death after V. vulnificus infection is due to an acute, early and atypical inflammatory response triggered by RtxA1 in which red blood cells seem to play a central role. These results could be relevant to other vibriosis as the toxins of this family are widespread in the Vibrio genus
