    Pictou Landing First Nation (PLFN) has experienced the impacts of being exposed to the effluent treatment facility for a pulp mill for decades, but in 2020, it was announced that the treatment facility would finally close. In my research, I will investigate and compare two sets of PLFN health data from 2014 and 2019 to answer the following research questions: 1) Does community health for the PLFN improve over time when community members have more autonomy over environmental decision-making?; and 2) Does Pictou Landing First Nation\u27s relationship to place improve with more autonomy in environmental decision making? I will use the lens of environmental dispossession, repossession, and the Piktukowaq environmental health cultural framework as a guiding theoretical framework to position PLFN relationships to land, autonomy, and each other. I will use community-based participatory research (CPBR) as a guiding methodology to emphasize the relationship between researchers and community and employ quantitative methods comparing secondary data from the 2014 and 2019 surveys.     Abstract Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) is a catheter-based medical imaging modality that is capable of providing cross-sectional images of the interior of blood vessels. A comprehensive analysis of the IVUS data allows collecting information about the morphology and structure of the vessel and the atherosclerotic plaque, if present. Atherosclerotic plaque formation is considered to be a part of an inflammatory process. Recent evidence has suggested that the presence and proliferation of vasa vasorum (VV) in the plaque is correlated with the increase of plaque inflammation and the processes which lead to its destabilization. Hence, the detection and measurement of VV in plaque has the potential to enable the development of an index of plaque vulnerability. In this paper, we review the research at the Computational Biomedicine Lab towards the development of a complete pipeline for the detection and quantification of extra-luminal blood detection from IVUS data which may be an indication of the existence of VV

    Astronomical Site Ranking Based on Tropospheric Wind Statistics

    We present comprehensive and reliable statistics of high altitude wind speeds and the tropospheric flows at the location of five important astronomical observatories. Statistical analysis exclusively of high altitude winds point to La Palma as the most suitable site for adaptive optics, with a mean value of 22.13 m/s at the 200 mbar pressure level. La Silla is at the bottom of the ranking, with the largest average value 200 mbar wind speed(33.35 m/s). We have found a clear annual periodicity of high altitude winds for the five sites in study. We have also explored the connection of high to low altitude atmospheric winds as a first approach of the linear relationship between the average velocity of the turbulence and high altitude winds (Sarazin & Tokovinin 2001). We may conclude that high and low altitude winds show good linear relationships at the five selected sites. The highest correlation coefficients correspond to Paranal and San Pedro Martir, while La Palma and La Silla show similar high to low altitude wind connection. Mauna Kea shows the smallest degree of correlation, which suggests a weaker linear relationship. Our results support the idea of high altitude winds as a parameter for rank astronomical sites in terms of their suitability for adaptive optics, although we have no evidence for adopting the same linear coefficient at different sites. The final value of this linear coefficient at a particular site could drastically change the interpretation of high altitude wind speeds as a direct parameter for site characterization.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures.     SDRS: a new lossless dimensionality reduction for text corpora

    In recent years, most content-based spam filters have been implemented using Machine Learning (ML) approaches by means of token-based representations of textual contents. After introducing multiple performance enhancements, the impact has been virtually irrelevant. Recent studies have introduced synset-based content representations as a reliable way to improve classification, as well as different forms to take advantage of semantic information to address problems, such as dimensionality reduction. These preliminary solutions present some limitations and enforce simplifications that must be gradually redefined in order to obtain significant improvements in spam content filtering. This study addresses the problem of feature reduction by introducing a new semantic-based proposal (SDRS) that avoids losing knowledge (lossless). Synset-features can be semantically grouped by taking advantage of taxonomic relations (mainly hypernyms) provided by BabelNet ontological dictionary (e.g. “Viagra” and “Cialis” can be summarized into the single features “anti-impotence drug”, “drug” or “chemical substance” depending on the generalization of 1, 2 or 3 levels). In order to decide how many levels should be used to generalize each synset of a dataset, our proposal takes advantage of Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEA) and particularly, of the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II). We have compared the performance achieved by a Naïve Bayes classifier, using both token-based and synset-based dataset representations, with and without executing dimensional reductions. As a result, our lossless semantic reduction strategy was able to find optimal semantic-based feature grouping strategies for the input texts, leading to a better performance of Naïve Bayes classifiers.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    Probabilistic segmentation of the lumen from intravascular ultrasound radio frequency data

    Abstract. Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) is a catheter-based medical imaging technique that produces cross-sectional images of blood vessels. In this paper, we present a method for the segmentation of the luminal border using IVUS radio frequency (RF) data. Specifically, we parameterize the lumen contour using Fourier series. This contour is deformed by minimizing a cost function that is formulated using a probabilistic approach in which the a priori term is obtained using the prediction confidence of a Support Vector Machine classifier using features extracted from the RF signal. We evaluated the performance of our method by comparing our results with manual segmentations from two expert observers on 280 frames from eight 40 MHz IVUS sequences from rabbits and pigs. The performance was evaluated using the Dice similarity coefficient, coefficient of determination, and linear regressions of the lumen area for each frame. Our results indicate the feasibility of our method for the segmentation of the lumen from IVUS RF data

    Family centred neonatal palliative care in children's hospices : a qualitative study of parents' experiences

    Since 1982, children's hospices in the UK have provided services where families can care for their children at the end of life (EOL) in a less medicalised environment. More recently, the services of many children's hospices have extended to newborn babies and their families. This paper explores the experiences of three families (five parents) who availed of children's hospices services when their babies required a palliative approach to care. Early diagnosis of a life-limiting condition in pregnancy allowed advanced care planning and enabled parental participation in decision-making before birth. A homely environment, as well as constant support and a sensitive approach from expert staff encouraged parental involvement in all aspects of their baby's care whilst in hospice. Extended time with their baby after death enabled parents to feel connected with their infant. The holistic and family-centred approach to care from children's hospices is highly valued by parents of newborn babies

    Multi-objective evolutionary optimization for dimensionality reduction of texts represented by synsets

    Despite new developments in machine learning classification techniques, improving the accuracy of spam filtering is a difficult task due to linguistic phenomena that limit its effectiveness. In particular, we highlight polysemy, synonymy, the usage of hypernyms/hyponyms, and the presence of irrelevant/confusing words. These problems should be solved at the pre-processing stage to avoid using inconsistent information in the building of classification models. Previous studies have suggested that the use of synset-based representation strategies could be successfully used to solve synonymy and polysemy problems. Complementarily, it is possible to take advantage of hyponymy/hypernymy-based to implement dimensionality reduction strategies. These strategies could unify textual terms to model the intentions of the document without losing any information (e.g., bringing together the synsets “viagra”, “ciallis”, “levitra” and other representing similar drugs by using “virility drug” which is a hyponym for all of them). These feature reduction schemes are known as lossless strategies as the information is not removed but only generalised. However, in some types of text classification problems (such as spam filtering) it may not be worthwhile to keep all the information and let dimensionality reduction algorithms discard information that may be irrelevant or confusing. In this work, we are introducing the feature reduction as a multi-objective optimisation problem to be solved using a Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm (MOEA). Our algorithm allows, with minor modifications, to implement lossless (using only semantic-based synset grouping), low-loss (discarding irrelevant information and using semantic-based synset grouping) or lossy (discarding only irrelevant information) strategies. The contribution of this study is two-fold: (i) to introduce different dimensionality reduction methods (lossless, low-loss and lossy) as an optimization problem that can be solved using MOEA and (ii) to provide an experimental comparison of lossless and low-loss schemes for text representation.     Total Colony-Forming Units Are a Strong, Independent Predictor of Neutrophil and Platelet Engraftment after Unrelated Umbilical Cord Blood Transplantation: A Single-Center Analysis of 435 Cord Blood Transplants

    Graft failure occurs in approximately 20% of patients after unrelated umbilical cord blood transplantation (UCBT). This could be because of inadequate potency of the cord blood unit (CBU). To this end, we investigated the impact of graft characteristics on engraftment and survival of 435 primarily pediatric (median age: 5.3 years) patients receiving a single-unit unrelated UCBT after myeloablative conditioning from 2000 to 2008. Pre-cryopreservation (pre-cryo) graft characteristics were provided by the banks. Post-thaw parameters were measured on dextran/albumin-washed grafts. Post-thaw recovery of the colony-forming unit (CFU), a biological assay reflecting functional viability of the cord blood cells was the lowest percent age (median 21.2%, mean 36.5%) of the pre-cryo value, regardless of the bank of origin. The cumulative incidences of neutrophil and platelet engraftment were 76.9% (95%, confidence interval [CI], 71.3%-82.5%) and 55% (95% CI, 49.3%-60.7%), respectively. Univariate and separate multivariate models using pre-cryo and post-thaw datasets including clinical parameters identified predictors of engraftment and survival. In multivariate modeling, higher CFU dosing was the only pre-cryo graft characteristic predictive of neutrophil (P = .0024) and platelet engraftment (P = .0063). In the post-thaw model, CFU dose best predicted neutrophil and platelet engraftment (both P < .0001). Comparatively, CD34+ and total nucleated cell (TNC) were only weakly predictive in post-thaw neutrophil and platelet engraftment models, respectively. In conclusion, CFU dose is a strong independent predictor of engraftment after unrelated UCBT and should be used to assess potency when selecting CBUs for transplantation

    Effect of Aging on Human Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy in Ischemic Cardiomyopathy Patients

    AbstractBackgroundThe role of patient age in the efficacy of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy in ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM) is controversial.ObjectivesThis study sought to determine whether the therapeutic effect of culture-expanded MSCs persists, even in older subjects.MethodsPatients with ICM who received MSCs via transendocardial stem cell injection (TESI) as part of the TAC-HFT (Transendocardial Autologous Cells in Ischemic Heart Failure) (n = 19) and POSEIDON (Percutaneous Stem Cell Injection Delivery Effects on Neomyogenesis) (n = 30) clinical trials were divided into 2 age groups: younger than 60 and 60 years of age and older. Functional capacity was measured by 6-min walk distance (6MWD) and quality of life using the Minnesota Living With Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ) score, measured at baseline, 6 months, and 1 year post-TESI. Various cardiac imaging parameters, including absolute scar size, were compared at baseline and 1 year post-TESI.ResultsThe mean 6MWD was similar at baseline and increased at 1 year post-TESI in both groups: 48.5 ± 14.6 m (p = 0.001) for the younger and 35.9 ± 18.3 m (p = 0.038) for the older participants (p = NS between groups). The older group exhibited a significant reduction in MLHFQ score (−7.04 ± 3.54; p = 0.022), whereas the younger than 60 age group had a borderline significant reduction (−11.22 ± 5.24; p = 0.058) from baseline (p = NS between groups). Although there were significant reductions in absolute scar size from baseline to 1 year post-TESI, the effect did not differ by age.ConclusionsMSC therapy with TESI in ICM patients improves 6MWD and MLHFQ score and reduces myocardial infarction size. Importantly, older individuals did not have an impaired response to MSC therapy

    Perinatal/neonatal palliative care : effecting improved knowledge and multi-professional practice of midwifery and children's nursing students through an inter-professional education initiative

    This paper presents a study that examines the potential value of a new and innovative inter-professional education (IPE) experience for final year midwifery and children's nursing students focused on improving awareness of end-of-life care for infants in conjunction with the support of their families. The study uses an action research approach to examine midwifery and children's nursing student experiences of an IPE initiative in developing knowledge regarding perinatal/neonatal palliative care. // The setting is a Higher Education Institute in the South of England that included final year midwifery students (n = 39) and children's nursing students (n = 34) taking part in the study. Qualitative and quantitative data indicated that the IPE intervention had proven worth in developing knowledge and confidence in the students as both student groupings felt they lacked knowledge and confidence about perinatal/neonatal palliative care before attending the study day. // Students felt that learning with, from and about the other profession represented was important in generating their knowledge. Educators should explore innovative ways to enable the further development of the fledgling speciality of perinatal/neonatal palliative care through education on an interprofessional platform
