    Distribution of catch-per-unit-of-effort and fishing effort for tuna in the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean by months of the year 1951-1960

    ENGLISH: Comparison of physical and biological environmental factors affecting the aggregation of tunas with the success of fishing by the commercial fleets, requires that catch and effort data be examined in greater detail than has been presented in these publications. Consequently, the United States Bureau of Commercial Fisheries Biological Laboratory, San Diego, to serve the needs of its program of research on causes of variations in tuna abundance, made arrangements with the Tuna Commission to summarize these catch and effort data by month, by one-degree area, by fishing vessel size-class, for the years 1951-1960 for bait boats and 1953-1960 for purse-seiners. The present paper describes the techniques employed in summarizing these data by automatic data processing methods. It also presents the catch and effort information by months, by five-degree areas and certain combinations of five-degree areas for use by fishermen, industry personnel, and research agencies. Because of space limitations and other considerations, the one-degree tabulations are not included but are available at the Tuna Commission and Bureau laboratories. SPANISH: La comparación de los factores ambientales físicos y biológicos que afectan la agrupación del atún, con el éxito obtenido en la pesca por las flotas comerciales, requiere que los datos sobre la captura y el esfuerzo sean examinados con mayor detalle de lo que han sido presentados en estas publicaciones. En consecuencia, el Laboratorio Biológico del Buró de Pesquerías Comerciales de los Estados Unidos, situado en San Diego, a fin de llenar los requisitos de su programa de investigación sobre las causas de las variaciones en la abundancia del atún, hizo arreglos con la Comisión del Atún para sumarizar esos datos sobre la captura y el esfuerzo por meses, por áreas de un grado, por clases de tamaño de las embarcaciones de pesca durante los años 1951-1960 en lo que concierne a los barcos de carnada y durante el período 1953-1960 en lo que respecta a los barcos rederos. El presente trabajo describe la técnica empleada en la sumarización de dichos datos mediante métodos automáticos de manejo de datos. También se da aquí la información sobre la captura y el esfuerzo por meses, por áreas de cinco grados y ciertas combinaciones de áreas de cinco grados para el uso de los pescadores, del personal de la industria y de las oficinas de investigación. Por falta de espacio y otras razones, las tabulaciones de las áreas de un grado no han sido incluídos en este trabajo, pero están a la disposición de quien tenga interés en los laboratorios de la Comisión del Atún y del Buró

    Graph composition has applications in a variety of practical applications. In drug development, for instance, in order to understand possible drug interactions, one has to merge known networks and examine topological variants arising from such composition. Similarly, the design of sensor nets may use existing network infrastructures, and the superposition of one network on another can help with network design and optimisation. The problem of network composition has not received much attention in algorithm and database research. Here, we work with biological networks encoded in Systems Biology Markup Language (SBML), based on XML syntax. We focus on XML merging and examine the algorithmic and performance challenges we encountered in our work and the possible solutions to the graph merge problem. We show that our XML graph merge solution performs well in practice and improves on the existing toolsets. This leads us into future work directions and the plan of research which will aim to implement graph merging primitives using domain knowledge to perform composition and decomposition on specific graphs in the biological domain

    Characterizing Ancylostoma caninum transcriptome and exploring nematode parasitic adaptation

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Hookworm infection is one of the most important neglected diseases in developing countries, with approximately 1 billion people infected worldwide. To better understand hookworm biology and nematode parasitism, the present study generated a near complete transcriptome of the canine hookworm <it>Ancylostoma caninum </it>to a very high coverage using high throughput technology, and compared it to those of the free-living nematode <it>Caenorhabditis elegans </it>and the parasite <it>Brugia malayi</it>.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The generated transcripts from four developmental stages, infective L3, serum stimulated L3, adult male and adult female, covered 93% of the <it>A. caninum </it>transcriptome. The broad diversity among nematode transcriptomes was confirmed, and an impact of parasitic adaptation on transcriptome diversity was inferred. Intra-population analysis showed that <it>A. caninum </it>has higher coding sequence diversity than humans. Examining the developmental expression profiles of <it>A. caninum </it>revealed major transitions in gene expression from larval stages to adult. Adult males expressed the highest number of selectively expressed genes, but adult female expressed the highest number of selective parasitism-related genes. Genes related to parasitism adaptation and <it>A. caninum </it>specific genes exhibited more expression selectivity while those conserved in nematodes tend to be consistently expressed. Parasitism related genes were expressed more selectively in adult male and female worms. The comprehensive analysis of digital expression profiles along with transcriptome comparisons enabled identification of a set of parasitism genes encoding secretory proteins in animal parasitic nematode.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study validated the usage of deep sequencing for gene expression profiling. Parasitic adaptation of the canine hookworm is related to its diversity and developmental dynamics. This comprehensive comparative genomic and expression study substantially improves our understanding of the basic biology and parasitism of hookworms and, is expected, in the long run, to accelerate research toward development of vaccines and novel anthelmintics.</p

    Magnetic characterisation of microstructural feature distribution in P9 and T22 steels by major and minor BH loop measurements

    This paper investigates the magnetic properties and parameters measured from major/minor loops and used to characterise different microstructural feature distributions in P9 and T22 steel in different heat treatment or service conditions. The present study introduces a non-destructive way of selecting microstructural features of interest and/or excluding those of little relevance by examination of minor loop measurements at a selected range of applied fields and discusses the fundamental mechanism in terms of domain processes. There is remarkable consistency in magnetic behaviours and properties such as initial/incremental permeability values between the measurements by different techniques. This behaviour has been ascribed to the similar underlying domain processes and hence similar selected microstructural features that are affecting the domain processes

    Electromagnetic evaluation of the microstructure of grade 91 tubes/pipes

    This paper assesses the feasibility of transferring a laboratory-based electromagnetic (EM) sensor technique, which has already proved sensitive to significant (e.g. phase balance) or subtle (e.g. number density of fine precipitates) microstructural changes in steel, to non-destructive evaluation of the microstructure of power generation components such as tubes/pipes. It has been found that Grade 91 steels, in different conditions representative of service entry, thermally aged or ex-service, can be distinguished using laboratory-based measurement systems on small machined cylindrical samples as well as by an industry deployment EM sensor system on full-diameter tube samples. The measurements for the tube samples follow the same trend as the machined cylindrical samples. The results indicate an industrial deployable sensor system can be used for sorting service-exposed or mis-heat-treated/mis-manufactured Grade 91 steel tubes/pipes from the correctly heat treated service-entry ones
