Handheld Raman Spectroscopy in the First UK Home Office Licensed Pharmacist-Led Community Drug Checking Service

This is an attempt to improve intelligence about current drug trends and reduce drug-related morbidity and mortality. In the UK, drug-related harm is increasing exponentially year after year. As such, specialist community treatment services are exploring new methods to improve engagement with people who use drugs (PWUD), who may require support for their problematic drug use. This need has driven the requirement to pilot an on-site, time-responsive, readily available drug-checking service at point-of-support centres. In this study, we piloted the UK’s first Home Office-licensed drug-checking service that was embedded into a community substance-misuse service and had all on-site analysis and harm-reduction interventions led and delivered by pharmacists. We report on the laboratory findings from the associated confirmatory analysis (UHPLC-MS, GC-MS, and 1H NMR) to assess the performance of the on-site hand-held Raman spectrometer and outline the challenges of providing real-time analysis of psychoactive substances in a clinical setting. Whilst acknowledging the limitation of the small sample size (n = 13), we demonstrate the potential suitability of using this technology for the purposes of screening substances in community-treatment services. Portability of equipment and timeliness of results are important and only very small samples may be provided by people who use the service. The challenges of accurately identifying substances from complex mixtures were equally found with both point-of-care Raman spectroscopy and laboratory confirmatory-analysis techniques. Incoherent dynamics of vibrating single-molecule transistors
We study the tunneling conductance of nano-scale quantum ``shuttles'' in
connection with a recent experiment (H. Park et al., Nature, 407, 57 (2000)) in
which a vibrating C^60 molecule was apparently functioning as the island of a
single electron transistor (SET). While our calculation starts from the same
model of previous work (D. Boese and H. Schoeller, Europhys. Lett. 54,
66(2001)) we obtain quantitatively different dynamics. Calculated I-V curves
exhibit most features present in experimental data with a physically reasonable
parameter set, and point to a strong dependence of the oscillator's potential
on the electrostatics of the island region. We propose that in a regime where
the electric field due to the bias voltage itself affects island position, a
"catastrophic" negative differential conductance (NDC) may be realized. This
effect is directly attributable to the magnitude of overlap of final and
initial quantum oscillator states, and as such represents experimental control
over quantum transitions of the oscillator via the macroscopically controllable

Green paper on multi-material preventive conservation guidelines
The main risk agents for Cultural Heritage (CH) conservation are the environment, the expected climate change, the increase in tourism, socio-economic pressures, inadequate restoration measures and management practices.
The purpose of the Green Paper in the CollectionCare project is:
- to encourage a broad reflection on new Preventive Conservation (PC) approaches for cultural objects considering their materiality and conservation condition in relation to the current EU standards;
- to stimulate the discussion on environmental monitoring and conservation strategies at the EU level.
In this document, 12 key issues were proposed based on what was achieved within the several tasks of the CollectionCare project, together with the related 26 questions for public consultation. The consultation will follow the normal rules of the European Commission for public consultation
Tracing spiral density waves in M81
We use SPITZER IRAC 3.6 and 4.5micron near infrared data from the Spitzer
Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS), optical B, V and I and 2MASS Ks band
data to produce mass surface density maps of M81. The IRAC 3.6 and 4.5micron
data, whilst dominated by emission from old stellar populations, is corrected
for small-scale contamination by young stars and PAH emission. The I band data
are used to produce a mass surface density map by a B-V colour-correction,
following the method of Bell and de Jong. We fit a bulge and exponential disc
to each mass map, and subtract these components to reveal the non-axisymmetric
mass surface density. From the residual mass maps we are able to extract the
amplitude and phase of the density wave, using azimuthal profiles. The response
of the gas is observed via dust emission in the 8micron IRAC band, allowing a
comparison between the phase of the stellar density wave and gas shock. The
relationship between this angular offset and radius suggests that the spiral
structure is reasonably long lived and allows the position of corotation to be

Simulations of the grand design galaxy M51: a case study for analysing tidally induced spiral structure
We present hydrodynamical models of the grand design spiral M51 (NGC 5194),
and its interaction with its companion NGC 5195. Despite the simplicity of our
models, our simulations capture the present day spiral structure of M51
remarkably well, and even reproduce details such as a kink along one spiral
arm, and spiral arm bifurcations. We investigate the offset between the stellar
and gaseous spiral arms, and find at most times (including the present day)
there is no offset between the stars and gas to within our error bars. We also
compare our simulations with recent observational analysis of M51. We compute
the pattern speed versus radius, and like the observations, find no single
global pattern speed. We also show that the spiral arms cannot be fitted well
by logarithmic spirals. We interpret these findings as evidence that M51 does
not exhibit a quasi-steady density wave, as would be predicted by density wave
theory. The internal structure of M51 derives from the complicated and
dynamical interaction with its companion, resulting in spiral arms showing
considerable structure in the form of short-lived kinks and bifurcations.
Rather than trying to model such galaxies in terms of global spiral modes with
fixed pattern speeds, it is more realistic to start from a picture in which the
spiral arms, while not being simple material arms, are the result of tidally
induced kinematic density `waves' or density patterns, which wind up slowly

The potential contribution of vaccination uptake to occupational differences in risk of SARS-CoV-2: Analysis of the ONS COVID-19 Infection Survey
Objectives To assess variation in vaccination uptake across occupational groups as a potential explanation for variation in risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Design We analysed data from the UK Office of National Statistics COVID-19 Infection Survey linked to vaccination data from the National Immunisation Management System in England from 1 December 2020 to 11 May 2022. We analysed vaccination uptake and SARS-CoV-2 infection risk by occupational group and assessed whether adjustment for vaccination reduced the variation in risk between occupational groups.
Results Estimated rates of triple vaccination were high across all occupational groups (80% or above), but were lowest for food processing (80%), personal care (82%), hospitality (83%), manual occupations (84%) and retail (85%). High rates were observed for individuals working in health (95% for office based, 92% for those in patient-facing roles) and education (91%) and office-based workers not included in other categories (90%). The impact of adjusting for vaccination when estimating relative risks of infection was generally modest (ratio of hazard ratios across all occupational groups reduced from 1.37 to 1.32), but was consistent with the hypothesis that low vaccination rates contribute to elevated risk in some groups.
Conclusions Variation in vaccination coverage might account for a modest proportion of occupational differences in infection risk. Vaccination rates were uniformly very high in this cohort, which may suggest that the participants are not representative of the general population. Accordingly, these results should be considered tentative pending the accumulation of additional evidence

Strategies for the Use of Fallback Foods in Apes
Researchers have suggested that fallback foods (FBFs) shape primate food processing adaptations, whereas preferred foods drive harvesting adaptations, and that the dietary importance of FBFs is central in determining the expression of a variety of traits. We examine these hypotheses in extant apes. First, we compare the nature and dietary importance of FBFs used by each taxon. FBF importance appears greatest in gorillas, followed by chimpanzees and siamangs, and least in orangutans and gibbons (bonobos are difficult to place). Next, we compare 20 traits among taxa to assess whether the relative expression of traits expected for consumption of FBFs matches their observed dietary importance. Trait manifestation generally conforms to predictions based on dietary importance of FBFs. However, some departures from predictions exist, particularly for orang-utans, which express relatively more food harvesting and processing traits predicted for consuming large amounts of FBFs than expected based on observed dietary importance. This is probably due to the chemical, mechanical, and phenological properties of the apes’ main FBFs, in particular high importance of figs for chimpanzees and hylobatids, compared to use of bark and leaves—plus figs in at least some Sumatran populations—by orang-utans. This may have permitted more specialized harvesting adaptations in chimpanzees and hylobatids, and required enhanced processing adaptations in orang-utans. Possible intercontinental differences in the availability and quality of preferred and FBFs may also be important. Our analysis supports previous hypotheses suggesting a critical influence of the dietary importance and quality of FBFs on ape ecology and, consequently, evolution
