Equivalence theory for density estimation, Poisson processes and Gaussian white noise with drift
This paper establishes the global asymptotic equivalence between a Poisson
process with variable intensity and white noise with drift under sharp
smoothness conditions on the unknown function. This equivalence is also
extended to density estimation models by Poissonization. The asymptotic
equivalences are established by constructing explicit equivalence mappings. The
impact of such asymptotic equivalence results is that an investigation in one
of these nonparametric models automatically yields asymptotically analogous

Socialist Dandies International: East Europe, 1946-1959
This article maps the looks and lifestyle choices of small groups of young, like-minded people who emerged in the postwar Soviet Union and East Europe in the background of huge political, social, and cultural changes. With their androgynous bodies wrapped in drape jackets and narrow trousers, and their love of jazz and swing, these young men stood in a sharp contrast to the official ideology that promoted socialism as a new, pure, and highly rationalized project, its ideal robust and strong man, and its mass culture that insisted on educational and restrained forms of entertainment. Through the categories of dress, body, and big city, the article investigates the clashes, and the eventual truce, between the socialist streamlined and rationalized master narrative and the young dandies' fragmented and disordered narrative. The article argues that the socialist dandies were not politically minded, and that their challenge to the officially proclaimed values was informed by their adolescent recklessness and a general postwar desolation. They were declared state enemies because the socialist regimes did not allow for alternative types of modernity. Consequently, the authorities condemned the young dandies' looks and interests as cosmopolitan, because they originated in the West, and as artificial, since they belonged to the culture that had preceded a new socialist world
A new model of a tidally disrupted star
A new semi-analytical model of a star evolving in a tidal field is proposed.
The model is a generalization of the so-called 'affine' stellar model. In our
model the star is composed of elliptical shells with different parameters and
different orientations, depending on time and on the radial Lagrangian
coordinate of the shell. The evolution equations of this model are derived from
the virial relations under certain assumptions, and the integrals of motion are
identified. It is shown that the evolution equations can be deduced from a
variational principle. The evolution equations are solved numerically and
compared quantitatively with the results of 3D numerical computations of the
tidal interaction of a star with a supermassive black hole. The comparison
shows very good agreement between the main ``integral'' characteristics
describing the tidal interaction event in our model and in the 3D computations.
Our model is effectively a one-dimensional Lagrangian model from the point of
view of numerical computations, and therefore it can be evolved numerically
times faster than the 3D approach allows. This makes our model
well suited for intensive calculations covering the whole parameter space of

Nanoscale Contact Mechanics between Two Grafted Polyelectrolyte Surfaces
The adhesive and frictional behavior of end-grafted poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (PDMAEMA) films (brushes) in contact with atomic force microscope tips from which PDMAEMA or poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) were grafted has been shown to be a strong function of pH in aqueous solution. The interaction between the brush-coated surfaces is determined by a combination of electrostatic and noncovalent interactions, modulated by the effect of the solvation state on the brush and the resulting area of contact between the probe and the surface. For cationic PDMAEMA-PDMAEMA contacts at low pH, the brushes are highly solvated; a combination of electrostatic repulsion and a high degree of solvation (leading to a significant osmotic pressure) leads to a small area of contact, weak adhesion, and energy dissipation through plowing. As the pH increases, the electrostatic repulsion and the osmotic pressure decrease, leading to an increase in the area of contact and a concomitant increase in the strength of adhesion through hydrophobic interactions; as a consequence, the friction-load relationship becomes nonlinear as shear processes contribute to friction and the mechanics are fitted by DMT theory and, at higher pH, by the JKR model. For PDMAEMA-PMAA, the electrostatic interaction is attractive at neutral pH, leading to a large adhesion force, a large area of contact, and a nonlinear friction-load relationship. However, as the pH becomes either very small or very large, a significant charge is acquired by one of the contacting surfaces, leading to a large amount of bound solvent and a significant osmotic pressure that resists deformation. As a consequence, the area of contact is small, adhesion forces are reduced, and the friction-load relationship is linear, with energy dissipation dominated by molecular plowing

People with genetic haemochromatosis (GH) accumulate iron from excessive dietary absorption. In populations of northern European origin, over 90% of patients are homozygous for the C282Y mutation of the HFE gene. While about 1 in 200 people in the general population have this genotype the proportion who develop clinical haemochromatosis is not known. Measuring the Three-Dimensional Structure of Galaxy Clusters. II. Are clusters of galaxies oblate or prolate?
The intrinsic shape of galaxy clusters can be obtained through a combination
of X-ray and Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect observations once cosmological parameters
are assumed to be known. In this paper we discuss the feasibility of modelling
galaxy clusters as either prolate or oblate ellipsoids. We analyze the
intra-cluster medium distribution for a sample of 25 X-ray selected clusters,
with measured Sunyaev-Zeldovich temperature decrements. A mixed population of
prolate and oblate ellipsoids of revolution fits the data well, with prolate
shapes preferred on a 60-76% basis. We observe an excess of clusters nearly
aligned along the line of sight, with respect to what is expected from a
randomly oriented cluster population, which might imply the presence of a
selection bias in our sample. We also find signs that a more general triaxial
morphology might better describe the morphology of galaxy clusters. Additional
constraints from gravitational lensing could disentangle the degeneracy between
an ellipsoidal and a triaxial morphology, and could also allow an unbiased

Detection of Planetary and Stellar Companions to Neighboring Stars via a Combination of Radial Velocity and Direct Imaging Techniques

Companions with orbital periods that exceed the duration of the survey manifest in the data as an incomplete orbit or linear trend, a feature that can either present as the sole detectable companion to the host star, or as an additional signal overlain on the signatures of previously discovered companion(s). A diagnostic that can confirm or constrain scenarios in which the trend is caused by an unseen stellar rather than planetary companion is the use of high-contrast imaging observations. Here, we present RV data from the Anglo-Australian Planet Search (AAPS) for 20 stars that show evidence of orbiting companions. Of these, six companions have resolved orbits, with three that lie in the planetary regime. Two of these (HD 92987b and HD 221420b) are new discoveries. Follow-up observations using the Differential Speckle Survey Instrument (DSSI) on the Gemini South telescope revealed that 5 of the 20 monitored companions are likely stellar in nature. We use the sensitivity of the AAPS and DSSI data to place constraints on the mass of the companions for the remaining systems. Our analysis shows that a planetary-mass companion provides the most likely self-consistent explanation of the data for many of the remaining systems.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
