    Formulation and in vitro evaluation of metformin hydrochloride loaded microspheres prepared with polysaccharide extracted from natural sources

    The present work envisages utilisation of biodegradable and biocompatible material from natural sources for the development of controlled release microspheres of metformin hydrochloride (MetH). Natural polysaccharides extracted from Dillenia indica L. (DI), Abelmoschus esculentus L. (AE) and Bora rice flour were used in fabricating controlled release microspheres. The microspheres were prepared by the emulsion solvent diffusion technique with different proportions of natural materials and were studied for entrapment efficiency, particle size, particle shape, surface morphology, drug excipient compatibility, mucoadhesivity and in vitro release properties. The prepared microspheres showed mucoadhesive properties and controlled release of metformin hydrochloride. The study has revealed that natural materials can be used for formulation of controlled release microspheres and will provide ample opportunities for further study

     Objective: The present research work is based on the applicability of bora rice as a natural polymer for preparing sustained aceclofenac bora ricemicrospheres.Methods: The microspheres were prepared by emulsion solvent diffusion technique.†The physicochemical characterizations of the preparedmicrospheres (percentage drug entrapment efficiency, scanning electron microscopy, percentage drug loading) were carried out as well as the in vitrodrug release was carried out in phosphate buffer pH 6.8.Result: The prepared microspheres were found to have a regular spherical shape, percentage drug entrapment efficiency of 52.6%. The in vitrorelease study in phosphate buffer pH 6.8 showed a sustained release of the drug for 24 hrs.Conclusion: The bora rice as a natural biodegradable polymer could efficiently sustained the release of aceclofenac for 24 hrs.Keywords: Bora rice, Aceclofenac, Scanning electron microscope, Sustained release

    320-325Calamus leptospadix Griff. belonging to family Arecaceae, is an ethnomedicinal plant of Assam used by the folks of state for many medicinal properties like anthelmintic, hepatoprotective, and antidiabetic. Its vernacular names include Betgaj,<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal"> Lejaibet, Bet, Bethas, Rattan palm,<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal"> Cane, Tangtangma, Titipi,<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal"> Jeyying and Ayyagoomi. Since there are no reports of systemic pharmacognostic and phytochemical studies on the shoot, the present work was planned to study the detailed macroscopical, microscopical, quantitative standards, physicochemical and chromatographic characteristics of the shoot. Preliminary phytochemical investigation indicated the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, glycosides, flavonoids, steroids, saponins, tannins and phenolic compounds. Fluorescent characteristics were analysed for the powdered crude drug and TLC profile was developed for petroleum ether, chloroform and methanolic extract of the shoot. Thus these conventional parameters would serve as a standard reference for identification, authentication and for distinguishing the plant from its adulterants. </span
