Retail shop distribution in interrupted orthogonal grids: The case of Tijuana
Tijuana’s historic centre an it’s surroundings are studied to fi nd possible systematic relationships
between the areas morphology and the distribution of retail shops. The study uses Space Syntax
theoretical framework and syntactic and statistical analysis methodologies. The fi ndings suggest
that Tijuana’s apparent unstructured and fragmented grid posses a certain logic. The study suggests
that it is this logic that is operating during the process of shop location and distribution. At
the global scale the confi guration is driven by the amount of connectivity that each isolated grid
has with it’s neighbours. This process gives way to inequalities that create functional differentiations
within the structure. At the local level, a systematic process brings together different geometric
and syntactical properties and the ratio of shop potential or opportunity into a complex system
where each variable plays an important role. In concludes by suggesting that it is the capacity
of both the global and local processes to work together that ultimately determines the size and
density of each shopping area
Monte Carlo Study of Mixed-Spin S=(1/2,1) Ising Ferrimagnets
We investigate Ising ferrimagnets on square and simple-cubic lattices with
exchange couplings between spins of values S=1/2 and S=1 on neighbouring sites
and an additional single-site anisotropy term on the S=1 sites. Based mainly on
a careful and comprehensive Monte Carlo study, we conclude that there is no
tricritical point in the two--dimensional case, in contradiction to mean-field
predictions and recent series results. However, evidence for a tricritical
point is found in the three-dimensional case. In addition, a line of
compensation points is found for the simple-cubic, but not for the square

Magnetic Behavior of a Mixed Ising Ferrimagnetic Model in an Oscillating Magnetic Field
The magnetic behavior of a mixed Ising ferrimagnetic system on a square
lattice, in which the two interpenetrating square sublattices have spins +- 1/2
and spins +-1,0, in the presence of an oscillating magnetic field has been
studied with Monte Carlo techniques. The model includes nearest and
next-nearest neighbor interactions, a crystal field and the oscillating
external field. By studying the hysteretic response of this model to an
oscillating field we found that it qualitatively reproduces the increasing of
the coercive field at the compensation temperature observed in real
ferrimagnets, a crucial feature for magneto-optical applications. This behavior
is basically independent of the frequency of the field and the size of the
system. The magnetic response of the system is related to a dynamical
transition from a paramagnetic to a ferromagnetic phase and to the different
temperature dependence of the relaxation times of both sublattices.Comment: 10 figures. To be published in Phys.Rev
Milk and milk-derived peptides combat against hypertension and vascular dysfunction : a review
Epidemiological studies have revealed that consumption of milk and fermented dairy products is inversely associated with elevated blood pressure and with many of the risk factors of the metabolic syndrome. Previously, calcium was thought to be behind this phenomenon, but during the last 20 years, convincing evidence emerging from experimental, epidemiological and intervention studies has highlighted the important role of the small peptides formed during fermentation processes. This review provides an overview of the potential blood pressure lowering components present in dairy products with a special focus on casein-derived tripeptides.Peer reviewe
Characterization of a possible nosocomial aspergillosis outbreak
ObjectiveTo study the epidemiologic aspects of a suspected outbreak of nosocomial invasive aspergillosis.MethodsSixteen Aspergillus fumigatus strains were isolated from bronchoalveolar washings or sputa of 10 patients during a 9-month period. Furthermore, two environmental samples, isolated in a microbiological screening of the hospital, were also available for analysis. Random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis (RAPD) was carried out.ResultsThe analysis performed by RAPD clearly demonstrated substantial genetic variation among the isolates. Both of the two different primers selected for RAPD analysis (R-108 and AP12h) were able to demonstrate that the strains isolated from all patients infected with the same fungal species and the environmental samples were genotypically distinct. The results by RAPD typing demonstrated that this technique could detect variability among isolates of Aspergillus fumigatus from different patients and even from the same patient.ConclusionsRAPD genotyping proved that the outbreak of invasive aspergillosis consisted of a series of events, non-related, and probably not coming from the same source within the hospital. This type of analysis is an easy, quick and highly discriminatory technique that may help in planning epidemiologic studies of aspergillosis

The State-Moro Armed Conflict in the Philippines: Unresolved national question or question of governance?
The continuing struggle of the Moro secessionist movement in the Philippines is one of Southeast Asia’s longest armed conflicts. The tenacity of the conflict lies in two competing concerns: the assertion of self-determination rights of the Moro separatist movement; and the affirmation of the Philippines’ sovereign right to territorial integrity. However, beneath these rights are crucial issues that remain unanswered both by the contending forces—problems where internecine violence and conflict emanate from. This article argues that self-determination rights can be adequately exercised by people who have clearly defined their national identity and concept of a nation. Unfortunately, the Moro multi-ethnic national identity has yet to be crystallised while the idea of a Bangsamoro (Bangsa Nation) remains weak. On the other hand, the state has yet to address the Moros’ legitimate demands of political autonomy, socio-economic development, and social justice and discrimination. Without underestimating the ethnic component of secessionism, the article concludes that poor governance has prolonged, complicated, and further justified the Moros’ quest to secede from the Republic
